My mother just brought home James Lipton's Exaltation of Larks (1993) from the library, and we were talking about it last night. We both love wordplay, and we were discussing the book, collective nouns, venery terms, etc. She said she was disappointed that there was no gem/jewelry section, but she came up with a few on her own, and I thought I would share them with you PSr's! Also, I wanted to start this thread so anyone else could contribute either their favorites or try to coin some new ones!

My mother's collective nouns for gems:

a twinkle of diamonds
a glitter of emeralds
a burst of rubies
a sparkle of sequins
a shimmer of sapphires
a dazzle of topaz
a bed of pearls

Some terms of venery as examples: (btw, terms of venery means from back in the middle ages when men hunted there were particular terms for what a number of the same animal was called, i.e. pride of lions, covey of pheasants, etc. It's fun to google and you will find some very tongue-in-cheek terms, and some very poetic ones as well, like Lipton's Exaltation of Larks example.) colony of ants, gaggle of geese, nest of vipers...so on.

Hee! Excellent game! One of my real-life favorites is "a murder of crows," and I can never resist thinking of teenage girls as traveling in either giggles, or twitters, depending on circumstance. Jewelry-wise, I''ll have to think about it ....

Circe, thanks! I haven''t been able to stop trying to come up with things since my mom brought up the subject last night!

It really is one of those addictive mental games ... another favorite: wunch of bankers. An oldie but a goodie ....

(No offense intended to any actual bankers.)

I am just surprised I guess, that there aren't any collective nouns out there for gems and jewelry! But I LOVE hearing any sort of witty collective nouns, so please bring 'em!

I was thinking:

a dazzle of diamonds
a sparkle of diamonds
a scintillation of sapphires
a hotness of rubies
a cool of aquamarines

Celebration of citrines
waterfall of aquamarines
lava of garnets

help me out here, PSr''s!

a perry of peridots? (that''s horrible!)

Anytime I see a family with lots of children I call them a litter. Not very nice, I know.

Somehow this thread reminds me of that movie with Matthew McConnaughey - Go Frost Yourself!

I am a grammar buff, but I never heard of "venery". At least, the word sounds familiar, but I could not have associated it with what you have described.

When you wrote, "collective noun", I thought about a "mass noun"...like a group of deer being "deer" or a group or fish being "fish". Speaking of fish, though, they sometimes come in a school...a school of fish.

If it makes you feel any better, my own FATHER calls us his 'litters'. He has several of them, one litter from each wife, containing 7 (6? 8? always hard to keep track) puppies...uh, I mean children... in all.

I love that kind of wordplay! A couple of years ago, when it was a lot more rare to see more than one Prius a day, I saw three in a row in the carpool lane (hybrids can use the carpool lanes in CA with only one person.) I started thinking about what you would call a group of them, and came up with:

A volt of Prii

Haha, Selkie. How about a Voltage of Prii.
