Another Green Diamond Question

Does anyone know when they started enhancing irradiating natural diamonds to turn them a green color?

Check out this report. The relevant paragraph is:

"The main way to induce color in diamonds today is irradiation. In 1905, an English chemist buried colorless diamonds in radium-bromide salts. Rind-like layers of blue, green, and yellow formed around the diamonds. Today, the stones are still too radioactive to wear! In 1942, a scientist at the University of Michigan used a cyclotron accelerator to safely and permanently color diamonds."

The reason I asked is that I found out that the green diamond I purchased was originally purchased from a distibutor named Shaftel in 1978. I beleive he is working with one of the shopping channels right now. The purchaser bought all the green mele stones the distributor had (1ctw) for $5,000. He sold off all the others but kept this one for himself.

I am having the stone sendt to the GIA for certification now.

Eh... 5k like 5k, but I really doubt this guy could have several

& matched

greens of that color.

I was curious about this too so yesterday I tracked down the distributor (he''s still in business). He has no memory of this transaction. As he said he does alot of diamond business and 25 years is a long time but a parcel of green diamonds he thinks he would remember. He does remember the seller of the stone very well and he did alot of business with him so now we''ll see.
