Oh dear. I was hoping a bark collar (one of those that sprays citronella, and does not zap) would work. I''ll give your technique a try.
These work really well (and are fairly humane) and this is what I was going to recommend.

Have you taken your doggie to a trainer? I suppose I could take her to a trainer. I''ve never used a trainer before actually. Never had any serious problems with any of my dogs. She is a feisty little thing, even when I purchased her from the breeder. Maybe I can ask her breeder too? Thanks!
No. Asking the breeder is a great idea (parents'' temperament, advice, etc...)

This article didn''t really get into it in depth but this his show is great.
I know one time he used a plastic bottle full of pennies and shook it whenever the dog did something bad (I think it was jumping up on the counter) but I bet it would work for barking too.
anyway...Just another suggestion.

Thanks for the link - I will surely check it out!

We are fighting against the dog's natural territorial instincts. Because the dogs think they are protecting their own territory, it is an extremely difficult problem to correct. Items such as citronella collars are a quick fix. In many cases, they don't work.

Electric collars that supply an electric shock to the animal when it barks have proven in some cases to be successful, but the RSPCA considers them cruel, and encourages veterinarians not to recommend them.

Behavioural training is the only solution for a permanent cure.

Companies such as Bark Busters, that come to your house and give you personal training with excellent follow-up support, could be your best bet.

There is no magic when fighting a dog's instincts to bark against threats to its territory. So you're in for a long haul journey, it seems.
