Anything you regret not buying?

Have you ever had the option to buy a stone or piece, but for whatever reason didn't, and now regret it?

Recently been thinking about this beautifully included, transparent CC Bekily garnet cabochon from a few years ago.
Over 6 carats, I think it was around 2k.
I know in reality it would probably be darker and greyer, but being a cab, should be lighter than faceted Bekily CC garnet I've seen.
Haven't really fallen in love with any CC garnet since or seen anything similar.

Yessssss! For me, too, it was a cabochon... a Jedi spinel cab on LoupeTroupe a few years ago that I hemmed and hawed and waited too long to pull the trigger. It was snapped up by someone else and I have not seen nearly as nice of a Jedi cab since then. Even when I do see them, they aren't of sufficient size or quality or price. One of those three factors is always lacking.

Interestingly, it's always cabochons I regret not buying. The market doesn't favor them nearly as much as faceted stones for multiple reasons, so they are so much harder to find in gem quality compared to their faceted siblings. If you're on the hunt or see one that really catches your fancy, my advice is: buy it!

I think there is actually a thread on this somewhere that's older; will try to find it. I cannot think of anything other than I wish I bought more gold when it was cheaper (but that is general).

Also, this isn't the same type of regret that you mention, but I wish I could go back in time and learn about PS and Loupe Troop earlier, because when I sold off much of my mom's stuff I sold on eBay. It would be nice if I knew that some went to a PSer which some of it surely would have.

I actually regret returning a round grey blue spinel several years ago. I was pretty intolerant of grey back then, and I ignored cut, luster, tone, brilliance, fire. However I am pretty happy with many of my purchases.

Regret buying some low end jewelry in the early years of our marriage. But it was special and sentimental at the time.
More recently, there are two gemstones I didn't buy at the Tucson show. Definitely regret it! One was a gorgeous 2+carat grape color change garnet, the other a Tanzanite. I also regret not buying more of Bill Vances treasure boxes of discounted stones, but had already picked up a small stack of spinels and had to stop somewhere!

Please share the thread if you find it. Reading these experiences interesting. I tried to find it but failed. I think the antique subforum has such a thread.

I think everyone goes through something like this. Some pieces indeed remain special regardless of value.
Lurking on PS saved me a lot of $$$.

Yes, an antique 20k gold bracelet that had a griffin head clasp I saw in an antique shop over twenty years ago. I've never seen anything remotely like it since. I couldn't afford it at the time and so like most things, I had to let it go. I have to let most things go- that's just how it is.
I still think about it.
I do that a lot.

Two things I’ve missed not once but twice.
The first was an Art Deco teaset I missed out on at auction, a few years later I saw it in an Antique store but didn’t buy it….. 30 years have passed since.
The second was a HUGE amethyst geode that was a coffee table. A piece of glass over the geode. I missed it at auction once, 8 years later I missed it at auction a second time…. 15 years have past.
I will buy that darn teaset if I ever see it again, the geode, well, it weighed almost a tonne, yep, so delivery, installation and floor strength was always going to be an issue.

1. 2012. A Cartier panthere pendant in Silverium. Pristine. State auction, listed for $1300. I sat on it for a full week - and missed the chance to enter a bid. Haven’t seen one in that condition for anywhere close to that price since.

2. 2009. Stephen Hofer’s Coloured Diamonds. $49.99 at a thrift store in the more affluent neighborhood over the hill from us. I’m angry with myself just thinking about this one - for god’s sake, did I leave my brain home that morning!?

3. 2020. A gorgeous little dark opal from
Justin at Black Opal Direct. Oddly shaped and low-domed but the colour… A ton of red, a ton of blue. Oh, that colour… I decided to sleep on it, and woke up ready to buy, and it was gone. ;(

Regret not buying a 1 ct-ish Alexandrite for $5K way back in the day. Wonderful colour change both ways and almost no muddiness when in mixed lighting.

I sort of regret earrings I passed on...antique blue zircons. It was right after I purchased my OEC studs which were pricey. I mean right after. I was tempted and almost pulled the trigger but then thought, no, I just got expensive diamond studs. How can I justify spending more money less than a week later. So I passed. Had they not come available till a few months after my purchase of the OEC studs I probably would have gotten the antique zircons. Oh well. But then again I don't wear most of my earrings so it's probably better off I didn't get them. I mean I only have two ears.

Not yet, but there is a ring I'll probably regret not buying after someone else finally gets it. Which is why I've downloaded its pictures. Maybe one day I'll have someone recreate it.

Imagine this: a bouquet of 10 long-stemmed red field flowers. The stems are wound in a circle, like a wreath, and tied right underneath the petals with a delicate rope, thus forming the ring band. The flowers are ten ~3mm round rubies, 22k gold, a little over 5 grams. Sold by a pawn shop, so no certificate, obviously, just the honest word of their gemologist. Currently priced at a little over 800 euro.

Now is not the time for luxury expenses, though. So I'll have to see it go. Hopefully its new owner will enjoy it to the fullest.

Yes= the carre platinum tennis/ inline/ eternity bracelet that AP had. it was on that page for sometime. my size adn budget, too. i just couldnt justify buying sight unseen, i needed to see it physically on my wrist as it is bright and blingy, but in a different way to MRB. now AP stuff sells in a few min or seconds. now can only just afford the lab made ones, if he ever has any...

What is AP?

These are the 2 that haunt me. Both from Caleb Quashen, both over 5k, and posted at times when I was in the middle of other projects and not able to spend so much on 1 piece. But freaking heartbreaking both times.

That first one is so unique I don’t even know what shape to call that!

Ugh I know. I regret it so much. I woke up after thinking about it for like 36h ready to buy and it sold. I was so sad. But it was like $6600, which is a lot of $$ so I needed time to think.

Yes, the most gorgeous unheated pink sapphire and diamond ring. I loved that ring, sigh.

Oh. Honey. We gotta talk.
:lol-2:

I should have added I have more earrings than I know what to do with lol. You might remember I tend to collect antique diamond earrings and well it’s just sad most go unworn. I adore all of them though. ❤️

Oh I do remember. So I wasn’t genuinely worried - your head’s in the right place, moments of doubt aside.
