Wow! I don''t know what that is - never heard the name before. Surely a commercial name, but of what?

The color could belong to apatite or tourmaline, but given the price range I agree with everyone else that apatite is more likely.

Or it could be synthetic... or color treated topaz.

Did you get to wear it allot? Apatite is quite soft - I wold be amazed if it survived absolutely unscathed a few months of constant wear as a ring. Also, the super intense color in the picture would be quite rare. If this is what you have, I would really consider having it set as a pendant rather the ring. It would be a pity to crash it one day, especially after a gorgeous setting was built just for it

Besides, the value of these neon blue apatite stones has gone in leaps and bounds, just as the supply keeps vanishing. In fact, I don''t even know if there is any more new material coming up. Perhaps this sounds like some cheap sales tactic, but this time... true.

Treated topaz is allot more durable, and obviously available in quantity... and allot cheaper.

About the setting: I am not convinced that the value of settings has to match that of the gems set in them. Just because many ''cheap'' stones are very beautiful and give interesting design choices.

Thanks Ana!

I am thinking it may be a treated or man made something or another...it was purchased from a mall jewelry store....for about $200-300.....

I have worn it over the years and do not see any wear or scratches, etc... seems to be ok.

So, what type(s) of settings would you like to see this stone in??
any ideas?
thanks!

A Mall store.... Hmmm.. that make it a who other ball game. the stone is beautiful though. I would think, with the brightness, it may look good in a bezel. I wonder if the stone would be strong enough... since I am at a loss for what it might be.... Maybe Richard or MJO will venture a guess.

natural zircon would be another guess....or manmade zirconia.

He Mine,

My guess would be a synthetic since the name teal lite suggests it to me. It does look like apetite but I don''t think they had that paraiba color 10 years ago. If fact the only windex blue stone I know of back then is Paraiba Tourmaline and that would have been very expensive.

Maurice

There was something of a stir at the gem shows about 10 years ago over so-called "neon" apatite. I bought several stones and jewelry pieces then (from Rachelle Sarosi, Andrew''s daughter), and they are virtually identical in color to the pictured ring. I''m sure I paid less than $100/ct for 1-2+ ct stones.

I hadn''t heard anything about it for quite some time, but recently came across a website advertising it as an affordable alternative to paraiba. Unfortunately, I didn''t bookmark the site and can''t find it again. Still, I agree that it would be unusual at best to find such a unique gem in a maul store.

GK,

I thought neon apitite was less than 10 years ago. That''s why I think it is a synthetic.

I''m pretty sure I bought it in late-''96 -- early-''97, but it could have been later. I assume the discovery preceded the shows I attend (not Tucson) by a year or so, but you could be right.

Gem,

thats exactly when I got it....1996....late...xmas time I think.

Can anyone help out here with some setting suggestions???????
bumpty bump

bump......anyone?

I would be leery to set apatite in a ring... but this time, it is not certain this is what the stone is, and you say it did wear well in a ring already.

Have you seen THESE already ?

Valeria101,

YES! those look just like my stone....so it may be a blue zircon huh????? interesting.

I have no idea what to do with this thing! hhhmmmmm, I also have a yellow gold omega necklace and a slide that has a small oval shaped stone....the same one, this blue zircon...
but I never wear them anymore because I dont really care for the yellow gold anymore.

I''m not sure if I should just rhodium everything, and leave it alone....or if I should take the stones and start from scratch....???....????
