Good Afternoon,

I recently purchased a stone from JamesAllen. http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1186176.asp
The GIA certificate identified the stone as an Excellent Cut, G colour, Si1, Ex Polish, and VG symmetry with good dimensions 6.48 x 6.53 x 3.95mm. The HCA scored a 0.7 (Ex-Ex-Ex-Vg) with the following proportions:
Depth: 60.7%
Table 54%
Crown Angle: 33 degrees
Pavilion Angle: 40.8 degrees.

I also requested an ideal scope which is attached and I felt that it looked great.

However, the stone has been recently appraised in Canada, and it was appraised as a Very good Cut, H colour, Si1. Not exactly what the GIA report has indicated.

The stone is quite beautiful with lots of fire and brilliance, however i do find the discrepancy a bit disheartening. How concerned should I be? Do i bother returning the stone to JA? It has been substantial work finding a stone in the first place, and the task of returning this stone and finding another seems like an even more daunting task. Thoughts / opinions / what would you do?

-Thanks
Isaac.

Hi Issac,

First was the person who did the appraisal an actual independant appraisal, or someone who sells jewellery? Do you have any info on the credentials of this appraiser? Cut grading is subjective - you do have a nicely cut diamond there and sometimes a diamond's colour grade can be appraised within a grade depending on various factors, but if you could tell us a bit more about the person who appraised the diamond that would help. Maybe one of the appraisers here will be able to offer you some advice.

Was the appraiser a true independent appraiser ... or one in a jewelry store?

Unfortunately at this time I do not have information on the credentials of the appraiser. I have given my stone to a custom setting jeweller, whom I trust, this person then sends the stone and ring setting for an appraisal for insurance purposes to an independent appraiser that he always uses. I do not have the name of his appraiser.

Ok well that would help if you could find out more, for all we know it could have been appraised by someone who isn't really skilled or qualified to appraise diamonds, so this is important to know if this person is a truly independant and qualified appraiser. One of the experts may clarify but I think a colour grade is within reasonable tolerances - maybe you could ask your jeweller to arrange for another appraisal to get a second opinion from a different appraiser if that would help.

That is true. The appraiser may not have the same qualification as GIA. If I go with this train of thought, do you believe, based on the GIA certificate and idealscope image that I have an excellent stone?
