On another forum (not related to diamonds) someone wrote this, ". . . my grandmother's 1930s marquise cut stone. It's a true antique. It comes to a full point, not the chopped off marquise cuts of today.".

Does anyone know what he's talking about?

The only thing I can think of is possibly some variant of a rose cut where there is no table but a point, but then I've never seen a rose cut with a marquise shape.

Or it could be a modern marquise set upside down (table side down).

Don;t exactly know what that person is talking about but....
Marquises have gone in and out of popularity.
In the '80's, for example- they were all the rage.
This caused a lot of cutters to add points to stones that would have been cut to oval shape- we used to call them "marq-ovals"

Then, more recently- say around the year 2000- marquises were not popular at all. At that time, many stones that could have been marquises- were cut into elongated ovals.
today marquises are again relatively popular so we see less of the trans-shaped diamonds. I guess we could call them "cross dressers" :twirl:

Hmm, my jeweler told me they joke that all the pears in the world started out as chipped marquises. Could be true. I love that they are so unpopular now, I have been snapping them up for $1-3 a point off ebay to eventually make a huge bracelet. I just had a custom ring made with some sweet dirt cheap marquise side stones I'd collected.

never heard of chopped off marquise! :twirl:

Well, I think marquise should return to having culets. Bah Humbug!
