Nope. Mostly because I''m a huge violator.

Just today I meant to say ''the guy that weighs 400lbs'' and instead I said ''the guy that ways 400lbs''

Yep, me too. And not because I don''t believe in/care about good spelling/grammar, but I do the same thing you gave an example of. I just have these stupid ''brain blips'' and type the wrong thing, or I just type a word wrong, and don''t catch it til it''s too late.

I really wish there wasn''t a time limit on our posts.
I blame it on pregnancy brain.

Damn it that''s my story and I''m sticking to it!

31.gif

I just ignore it. So long as I get what everyone is saying, I don''t have a problem with it. We aren''t here to write a book......

Oops, sorry. I should have included the correct way.

Yep, the period or comma is inside the quotation. Really, though, seeing that mistake in posts isn''t what bugs me as much as when it''s in printed form, such as a magazine or newspaper.

The post example above, the correct way should have been, ''She likes a lot of diamond shapes.''

Quick question for savvy members here. In my diamond sentence example in this post, should there be a comma after the word ''been?''
I think the comma stays.

I hate alot. Alot is not a word.

I also learned a trick for the except/accept conundrum (crap, is that spelled right?!
3.gif
):
NEVA
noun = except
verb = accept
So helpful

Then and than trip me up sometimes.

not usually but I do find it strange that grown folks still can not spell the word "definitely." I see it spelled definately a lot. It does kinda bug me.

Spelling and grammar--not so much, but text language?? Yucko!

Except/accept completely confuse me. So much so, that I DO NOT use either word when I''m writing! lol

a lot is two words. like lunch time !!

Ohhh I just remembered another one of my big pet peeves. AFFECT and EFFECT. Grrrr. I am in a field where it really is pretty crucial to understand the difference and even among colleagues I often see it misused.

It depends upon the kind of error. My grammar isn''t that great, so I don''t judge people on that
2.gif
.

The only three major pet peeves that drive me nuts are the following:

When people spell a lot as one word, ''alot,'' or spell it as ''allot.''

When people put the period or comma outside of the quotations, such as ''a lot'', or ''allot''. Totally bugs the crap out of me.

When people do not capitalize their sentences and do the above mistakes on top of that. she said, ''i like allot of diamond shapes''. Annoying.

Beyond that, I just ignore all the minor mistakes.

MC: Actually allot is a word, it is a verb. Here is the definition.

Allot is a verb that means to distribute, to assign a portion, or to divide.

LOL I is stoopid.

My NEVA thing was for EFFECT and AFFECT, not accept/except.

So the effect that this has on me should not affect my work. I accept this, except for this point. Go comp lit degree!

Are you bothered by spelling and grammar errors on a forum? Or do you just ignore and read through them?

I just read what the person has to say.

YES! How did I forget that??? There''s that NEVA rule mentioned above. I can''t understand how they''re so difficult.

And big DITTO to the person that said they see "definitely" misspelled often. It bugs the daylights out of me. And "separate" seems to be misspelled frequently.

Haha, this topic makes this little former English major''s heart go pitter-pat. I''m not alone!

I notice, but am not bothered by it UNLESS it's my own mistake, which I then become obsessed over 'cause I know someone else is noticing it. More than grammar or punctuation, incorrect word choice is a HUGE pet peeve of mine, but I would never correct someone. I really hate to see the following words used interchangeably and incorrectly: there, their, and they're.

ETA: Oh, I don't like to see this either: your vs you're, and to vs too.

Argh,

I have no clue. I am just going to forego quotations in the future. Too complicated. The question mark can also go in the quotation? OMG! I give up.

My responses will be in the form of smilies in the future - at least I cannot get that wrong.

LOL. ((HUGS)) Always put any sort of punctuation inside the quotation marks.

"Really!?"

"Yup."

"Are you sure?"

"Yup!"

Smilies work too. Hooray for emoticons.

Yes. I'm especially bothered people who misuse apostrophes, although some words don't bother me as much because they're inherently tricky (for example: its, it's). Seeing the apostrophe rule's broken in other way's really bugs me, though (AAAAGGGHHHH!!!!!!). I'm a mental corrector, but not "out loud," if you will.

I think my annoyance also depends on whether it's a one-off or something constant, and how the rest of the post flows. If someone misspells or misuses a word here and there, or picks the wrong homonym, that's one thing. Typing in text-speak and using all caps but no punctuation is quite another. I know I'm not perfect and I don't expect others to be, but basic readability is important.

I will never accept that allot is part of the dictionary! Somehow it's branding into my brain as irritating.

Sunnyd - funny, I was thinking effect/affect as well but somehow mixed it up with accept/except! Hillarious that we both did so.

Yup. But I I''m also a lousy typist and speller, so I try to be kind.

That was pretty bad. I still can''t really read that sentence. LOL!

Dear gods, yes. Also by netspeak ("u" for "you" is *not* an acceptable substitution) and by all upper or lowercase capitalization. I may be growing a tad curmudgeonly in my old age ... but if I take the time to do a quick scan of my postings, I appreciate it when other people do likewise. It just reads as fundamental respect.

See also, damn kids getting off my lawn.

Hehehe...guilty!

I notice, but could care less as long as it is someone else. When it''s me, it drives me crazy. What''s worse is when you notice the mistake and its too late to fix it!

Good spelling/grammar doesn''t come as easily to certain people. I know plenty of math brains that can''t spell for sh*t, but who am I to say anything when I can barely do 8th grade algebra?

speel? whats dat?
punturation that sounds like tortere.
no likey send byte to the bit bin. (send it to the cycle bin for microsmurf winblows users)

PS is the first forum I''ve participated in on a regular basis. So, initially, it bugged the heck out of me!! The errors just jumped off of the post (my mom always said I should be a proof reader.) But, having been here for a while, I don''t see them as much. I''ve given "voices" to a lot of people here and I just take it as the way they speak (ie: Storm
1.gif
) I have so many errors any more, it''s ridiculous! But, that''s what you get when you type in a hurry.

Not at all while on forums, because I see it as a medium like texting or IMing - you''re trying to communicate quickly, just to get the message out.

It''s funny, because I''m a total stickler for grammar and spelling in other mediums, such as letter writing. I know that I am misspelling all the time on the forum, which is kind of funny (it''s because I type very quickly and somewhat sloppily) because I was a spelling bee kid and am normally irked by bad grammar and misspellings
