It only bothers me when it stretches to the point of making something difficult to understand. I figure that we all make mistakes from time to time in our typing, spelling, and/or grammar so I''m pretty forgiving about that, but when there are enough errors to make it difficult to understand a post, then it starts to bug me.

Ditto! I also HATE ''u'' instead of ''you'' and that kind of thing. I will usually skip posts that are typed like that!

I notice, but am not bothered by it UNLESS it''s my own mistake, which I then become obsessed over ''cause I know someone else is noticing it. More than grammar or punctuation, incorrect word choice is a HUGE pet peeve of mine, but I would never correct someone. I really hate to see the following words used interchangeably and incorrectly: there, their, and they''re.

ETA: Oh, I don''t like to see this either: your vs you''re, and to vs too.

Ditto this, too! I really HATE ''your'' instead of ''you''re'' for some reason, too!

Let me clarify... I don''t EVER correct anybody''s mistakes... We''re not in school here! They just make that little buzzer go off on my head. But, since this is an international forum, and many of us learned English as a second language, mistakes are no big thing!!

is there a Plural word for "jewelry" ?

is there a Plural word for ''jewelry'' ?
Leave it to you, DF, to come up with a question I can''t answer off of the top of my head.

My instinct is to say that "jewelry" is generally used as a plural, and that a singular item would be referred to as a piece of jewelry.

Interesting question. I''m off to research!

I believe that is the plural form.

I''m a terrible speller and have to spell check everything. If someone wants to create a spell check for ps then my posts will improve. I don''t re-read my posts even though I should because this forum is a special thing for me that I don''t get to spend all that much time posting on. I type as I think and I hope that people don''t judge me too hard on my mistakes. I''m really bothered when I happen to read one of my old posts and notice a grammer error but really, I have better things to worry about.

If someone were paying me to post here maybe I would find the time to check and proofread my posts.

I do my best and that is really the best I can offer.

It doesn''t bother me or distract me at all.

I let the grammar, punctuation and mis-used words slide by....life is too short to get crazy about that on a public forum.

What makes me NUTS however, is people who write miles of text with no paragraph breaks. It makes it SO HARD to read and focus on their train of thought. I find that I completely ignore those. Which is too bad, because I''m sure they have a lot of good to say but when it''s one giant run on sentence, it''s too much work to get to the end of it.

you guys can laugh all you want at my poor spellings and bad grammars,it doesn''t bother me a bit. English is my second language, but for those of you whom i know are well educated shouldn''t speak/type with bad grammars.

I never correct grammar/spelling errors. . .just for clarification, I was joking about the proofreading comment. lol

My kids have horrible grammar skills, however, and it's hard not to constantly correct them. They're so young. . .hopefully they grow out of it!

I am that cat! And I''ll blame law review too (managing editor no less) although I was a spelling bee kid long before that. But thanks to law review, I learned the which/that rule as well as the even less well-known since/because rule. When I read something that uses them incorrectly, I actually correct them in my head as I read. And I think distracted is the right word for me. I only get bothered if a post is littered with spelling and grammar mistakes and then I usually skip the rest rather than plow through to the end.

I have to admit spelling mistakes in real easy words do get my attention...but I would never try to correct someone.

What gets to me is when people don''t use any paragraphs or spacing at all, and its almost impossible to read. I usually have to give up on those.

Jewel is singular, jewelry is plural [Go figure - only in English - not my native language so I'm allowed to complain! LOL!]

ETA But, OTOH, jewels is the plural too. I'm confused!

I''m not bothered by it, but I definitely notice it. And I am often sidetracked in a post if I see common errors like "I need to loose ten pounds" or "I thought what he said was appauling."

The big thing I can''t stand is "as per." Once my BF pointed it out to me (because it drove him crazy) it started to drive me crazy too!

I think it''s because people say it all the time, so I can''t escape it. I did tell my colleague once, and she said "yeah but if so many people do it, then even though it''s wrong, doesn''t that kind of make it right?"

For all of you who are interested in common errorrs in English: http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/

It used to, a lot. But not anymore. I type really fast and tend not to check over what I just wrote.. so sometimes I get the wrong letters mixed in there :)

The one that bothers me the most is when people use YOUR instead of YOU''RE. Silly, I know.

"I also h8 wen ppl type lyke dis to much."

Again, I think some people are taking this too seriously/literally

(ETA: re: there being bigger things to worry about so they let that slide by, there are some in-between reactions there).

I think most of us can agree that we will notice/be distracted by such things (which is what I meant by 'bothered'), and not actually emotionally distraught over someone else's poor English

Nope. Mostly because I''m a huge violator.

Just today I meant to say ''the guy that weighs 400lbs'' and instead I said ''the guy that ways 400lbs''

23.gif
Yep, me too. And not because I don''t believe in/care about good spelling/grammar, but I do the same thing you gave an example of. I just have these stupid ''brain blips'' and type the wrong thing, or I just type a word wrong, and don''t catch it til it''s too late.

I really wish there wasn''t a time limit on our posts.
i am also a huge violaterrr also....so i cant complain.

I can't spell for my life. My intern year was a nightmare because people could not get past my spelling until the program director intervened (since technically it is a disability). I eventually memorized (I have a great memory) the most common words of my field and moved on. It is something I have had to deal with for many years and many people have used it to judge my overall intelligence, or they think I am just careless.

It bugged me that I made a lot of errors on here. I never noticed them until I re-read my post, and I know that I can only pick out some of the errors. When I got my mac, things changed. Spell check is built into everything, including Safari :-) I love it. But spell check does not pick up incorrect word choices, which one of the errors I tend to make.

I really don't notice other people's errors at all. And in the rare occasion i do it does not bug me one bit. After all the grief I have been through my whole life, I don't have a place to judge.

PS I had 4 words on here picked up by spell check :-).

Okay, I decided to say screw the bad spelling, grammar, and all that, because if I did take the time to proofread everything, I''d have less time to post messages that probably will contain errors anyway (because I keep finding them AFTER I hit the submit button). That is just part of life. As long as I don''t mess up my checkbook, all is good.

I don''t really care.

Except for one thing.

Almost everyone says weary instead of wary. And not just on this forum! I don''t know why.

Ok. I grew up with a English major and an attorney who can''t spell his way out of a paper bag (but he''s great at math!)

My dad has been known to spell monkey, munkee. I have compassion for bad spellers because at the age of 6 I was correcting my dad''s spelling.

I''ll be the first to admit that I''m not perfect either, but I can''t handle the isle or the rediculous. Especially that last one. It is EVERYWHERE. Where did it come from?

Ditto! I call that walloftext.jpg.

I''m incredibly guilty of typos and terrible grammar on forums. I''m at work, I''m multi-tasking.

In any case, after a few minutes, you can''t go back to edit your mistake so it stays there for all of eternity.

I definitely notice and wince inwardly, but I would never correct someone''s spelling/grammar on a public forum. What bugs me way more than that is when people use horrible spelling/grammar/punctuation/etc. in work emails.

That and when people call me by my last name, which happens ALL THE TIME. It''s right there in my signature, people. I realize that my last name is also a common first name, but that doesn''t mean you get to call me that! I feel like I''m in gym class!

OK, this just turned into a pet peeve rant rather than staying on topic. Oops!

THAT IS THE WORST! I detest when people use text speak in work e-mails. One of my co-workers did that when she was covering for me one time, and sent my customers e-mails full of "I did this and that, that ok wit u?" AHHHHHHHHHH!
