I’ve been looking for an emerald cab ring and found this sugarloaf ring at my local Lang Antiques: https://www.langantiques.com/art-deco-sugarloaf-emerald-and-diamond-ring-gia-f1.html. When I saw it in person, it was very pretty — good color, good glow, and interesting shape. But it has two little scratches on the side of the stone. I worry that the price, even on sale, at almost 8k, is a bit high for the quality. Thoughts about the ring?

Oh, the ring is gorgeous. I can't comment on the quality issue (and the ring now shows as reserved with no price shown), but the emerald is just delicious!

Ah, I forgot the price doesn’t shown when it’s on reserve. I’m going back to see it and decide tomorrow! I’ve edited the post now — it’s almost 8k.

Ring is gorgeous! I think Lang has done 10% off holiday sales in the past.

This ring is lovely!

The price will be higher because of it being an F1 and the origin. Cabs/sugarloaf cuts with less treatment seem to be a bit more of a rarity and can command a higher price from what I’ve seen.

Good luck with your decision, it seems to be a pretty color from the pics.

Thanks, all -- it's good to know that it's a fair price -- here are some pics that I took last time I went. I was thinking of resizing it so that it fits my middle & pointer fingers.emerald ring photo 1.jpgemerald ring photo 2.jpgemerald ring photo 3.jpgemerald ring photo 4.jpgemerald ring photo 1.jpgemerald ring photo 2.jpgemerald ring photo 3.jpgemerald ring photo 4.jpg

The ring is lovely, thanks for sharing!

I love it!

I think it's stunning! What did you decide?

Love this! Which finger did you decide on?

You might want to cross post this inquiry in the colored stone forum as well, as they might have emerald experts over there who can advise you on how the scratches can be polished out, potential gem cutter who does this, possible cost, and whether that is easy or risky.

I would not do that and risk jeopardizing the fine bezel. They almost never seem to look the same after. Surface scratches are acceptable given all the jardin. What's a few door-dings on a 100-year-old car?

Great advice. And so important to hear what is to be expected.

Just like I would never re-polish an antique diamond. (I made that mistake once.) The antique patina is part of the value and you will destroy the original cut, for diamonds anyway.

It’s stunning! I believe there was a thread here a while back discussing a ring with a tall sugarloaf emerald that is now selling at a similar price as yours here . In any case, it looks beautiful on your hand and I hope you decide to bring it home!

I remember that one! A lot of conversation about the wonky loops N and S but somebody managed to straighten them out, looks like. And that sugarloaf will poke an eye out. :mrgreen2:

That sugarloaf though!! I visit it from time to time. If it were mine I would surely lose an eye staring too closely at it while in a moving vehicle or something
