bent prongs?

I have my engagement ring made but I am concerned with it. First of all when i got it at the jeweler i noticed one prong was not straight and was tilted to the right. That was corrected on the same day and I thought it looked out.

However it does not look like what it should be from the pictures.
This is what I ordered

and this is what I got (i know its a side picture, i will upload other side later)

The prongs look like they have been bent back and so the diamond sits even lower than it should.

top view:
this is not 100% symmetrical either

Surely this can't be normal can it? Please let me know your opinions.

Thanks

the diamond is a 0.7ct f vs2 table 57 depth 60.1

Hi Daz,

It looks to me as if the prongs don't have the curved shape that is seen in the design image, it appears they are angled more upright than in a ' scoopy' curve if that makes sense and the prong edges where they should flow over the girdle of the stone are protruding more than in the original image, it looks as if the metal is not finished in a smooth curve there either and shows some thickness not present in the design image. It also looks as if the prongs are a little uneven on the top where they are finished over the surface of the diamond, but that could be how I am looking at the image, there is a bit of glare making it harder to judge. But on looking again now I can see the symmetry of the prongs is off.

Have you just received the ring? I am sure this is fixable!

If it is any consolation...I have only gotten one really well-set stone from a vendor - and had about 7 diamonds sent set to consider, and also had one diamond set locally that had to be redone.
The head looks too small for the stone if you wanted it to look like the picture, and I see the problem with the symmetry of the prongs.
I have no useful advice except to start over - asking the setter why it doesn't look as pictured.

I agree with Jimmianne that the prongs looks too small for the stone. To me the prongs look too stretched out and I do not like the ways the prongs are finished.... too bulky and not even. :nono:

heres some close up pics of the bent prongs!

I would advise taking it back to the store, I would be very unhappy also with that ring, this is not acceptable in my opinion. How long have you had it for, have you just received it? I am sorry this happened but I am sure you will end up with a beautiful ring the way you want it.

I'm no expert but I wouldn't be happy with that as it is even without the ideal picture. They butchered it. If it is suppose to match that first picture, it just doesn't.

BTW, I think the setting in the first picture is beautiful so I hope you end up with something similar!

i had just received it 2 days ago so I will be returning it. I have written a lengthy email to them and requested a brand new setting, not just a quick fix. I will be sending it back tomorrow and see what happens. Will update you guys after

looking at the above images and now looking at the ring I am 100% sure the diamond itself is not centered correctly in the ring, hence the prongs are shifted more towards one side. Either way the prongs are bent completely opposite...in then out... to the design even if it was centered correctly and that is not what I had wanted. I want exactly the same as the picture which is like the 6 prongs of the tiffany setting!

I am not at all an expert, but I second the idea that the prongs are crooked and are not nicely finished. The little "triangle" hole area also looks poorly finished. I would not be happy with the ring and would request a complete remake.

edit: on second thought, do you have confidence that this jeweler can make your vision reality?

That very first image looks like a CAD and not an actual picture of a ring. I don't think that looks like a great Tiffany repro and I am not sure remaking it will turn out a lot better unless they make a better head.

Look at the side view of this one in comparison:

Your diamond is set too low and the head looks a little sloppy where it is set in the shank.

hi, yes i know its not an exact tiffany repro as I thought it would suit my gf better than the classic knife edge. This one is tapered but I was expecting the head, prongs to be exactly like the tiffany setting. But what I got was the prongs bent backwards. My 0.7ct has a large spread so its dimensions look like 0.75ct on its face. Im guessing they had made the setting first for a 0.70ct standard and then tried to fit my diamond into it by bending the prongs back.

You are doing the right thing and this will be sorted out, please keep us posted and let us know if we can help further in any way.

There's only a very tiny bit of difference between a .7 and a .75, so it would be more likely that they used a .5 or 5mm head. If they come in mm sizes, your diamond would be between a 5 and 6mm head, so there would not be a perfect fit unless the head was custom made specifically for your stone. A 6mm head might fit better, though. I just think the head itself is designed too low, not just a bad fit.
