Oh, lots of people believe things for which there is no proof.
They see nothing wrong with it, in fact they've been convinced to view faith as a good thing.

It sounds like he truly terrified the kids, so much that they screamed, which imo takes it from funny to mean. I wouldn't say "worst" father but maybe not the best prank after all.

To be fair, girls will scream at anything. I'm willing to assume it was more thrilling and exciting for them, rather than terrifying.

I recognize the point both sides have, but lean towards it being better than worse.

I've never been one but believe parents have, perhaps, the hardest job ...
to prepare a healthy, well adjusted functional adult to enter an imperfect world.

Brings to mind that song.
Though a father naming his son Sue during the brutal wild wild west, is an extreme example of this topic, the last lyrics reveal the dad's good intentions ...

I had a canonic nervous breakdown and hospitalizations when my son turned 3. He got my little guy into sports and he developed a love of hockey. He had to get up @ 5am to take him to practices. He attended every game. He also was able to talk to our son about what was going on with me, assuring him I would be home soon. He even sneaked him in for a visit or two.
The relationship remains strong; he calls on his father for advice or just to talk.
He continues to be a great father and grandfather and the best husband a woman would want,
