It definitely falls under the square cushion cut category even though it has pointy corners; cushion cuts comes in many flavours. Just be sure to have all 4 corners (std corners) well protected. I’m not sure if there’s anything you can do about the remaining 4 corners (NSEW). I wonder if the std 4 corners will fit into chevron prongs for maximum protection?

That’s really a good price/value you’ve selected by going with Gene’s tourmaline. You’ve got size and colour all in one package within your budget. As for settings, what styles appeal to you?

Well, with such a big and colorful stone, I want to stick with something simple that lets the stone speak for itself. Here are some photos of things I like - in the case of the green amethyst below, I like the idea but would probably want less diamonds. With the morganite, again, love the idea, but I don''t think I''d want to cover up so much of the stone. The diamond one I just think is simple and elegant and gorgeous, but I don''t know how it would look with a much bigger stone.

The morganite has the most protective setting because it has numerous sets of fine double prongs all around the stone but I wonder if the design will not complement the darker tone of the tourmaline.

Yes, I thought that as well - the setting is certainly secure, but I don''t know what it will look like with the tourmaline. I''m also not sure if all of those prongs would look good without the flower detail on top of the stone (which I definitely would not want). We''ll see. The jeweler who is designing the ring will have good ideas, I''m sure. I just can''t wait to see the stone!

Do you want to set it star set or normal? For the record that MaeVona setting only fits up to a 2ct diamond, so you''d for sure have to get it custom.

I considered that MaeVona setting for my mom''s 1.5ct princess. I love MaeVona''s designs.

What does "star set" mean? Does that mean set diagonally/as a diamond rather than a square? If so, then the answer is yes, star set (like the green amethyst in the pic). Our jeweler is creating a custom setting so no worries there, I just want to have some ideas/inspiration pics to give him.

excellent choice of stone!!

I like the morganite setting, but i tink your stone is a tad too dark for it.

the principle is a good one, you need to protect the corners, since it is going to be for daily wear.

keep looking!

congrats, that is a great stone. I was secretly hoping that you wouldn''t buy it as I have been trying to convince my hubby to get it for me for a birthday gift! I''ll just have to be green with envy on this one. I can''t wait to see what the finished project looks like!

Yes, so the points are at NSEW, instead of...well, square. It''s also referred to as kite set, and a couple other ways that I can''t think of right now.

I think you made a stellar choice, having had many Gene stones in my possession, I think they are quite stunning. I very much doubt that you will be disappointed in your choice.

This might not work because your stone is so large but this is pretty without diamonds.

And once again i''m not sure if this is your style but I love Charmy''s ring setting.

Oops, sorry EL! If I end up sending it back for any reason, I''ll be sure to let you know first!

Sarahbear, thank you for those photos. I think I saw the first one on the engagement ring thread, and I really liked it. The second one I hadn''t seen and it''s a great idea too! Hopefully I''ll be able to envision more what I want when I actually see the stone and get a really good look at its actual size and cut.

You picked a gorgeous looking stone...and you know you owe us pictures when it comes in, right?

I say simpler is better when it comes to setting this puppy. I would consider bezeling it for security and simplicity. Since it''s a precision-cut stone that''s not too darkly saturated, it shouldn''t black out in a bezel. Otherwise I''d go with 8 prongs, on on each corner-ish part of the stone.

Congrats on getting such a stunner for an Ering!! You MUST post photos when you get it!

What kind of setting style do you like? Modern, antique, classic?

I will definitely post photos! As for the setting, I don''t think I want a bezel - I know they''re more secure, but I prefer a more open look. I tend to wear a lot of funky jewelry, but in this case I want to stick to something classic/neutral/simple so that it won''t look odd with my other pieces. 8 prongs might be the ticket, maybe with some interesting detail on the band or around the side of the stone.

Aww...that is sweet, however, THIS is YOUR e-ring stone. Don''t be sorry at all!! I''m very excited for you.

On another note, I also live in the city and I would love to go to Pariba some day. I''m totally jealous.

A stunning stone! Great choice, cannot wait to see it set. Here are some design ideas for you.

Congrats on picking a stone! Yingh, those are nice inspiration pics. I especially like the Daniel K and the Leon (both on the left).

Ooh, thank you for the inspiration pics - I agree, the two on the left are especially gorgeous! Here are some more that I''ve found - thanks to everyone for posting their gorgeous rings! I really like the little side detail on the pearl, but I also like the general idea of the two on the far right (aqua and citrine). Not sure if the size of my stone will lend itself to settings like those or not though.

Sarahbear - Thank you for your compliments. I too love that ring design but too bad the ring isn''t great quality. I don''t wear it much anymore because there is too much wear and tear.

bigemlover - The stone you selected is so lovely. Great choice.

What about something like this?

Or this but it will be very difficult to replicate if possible at all.

Charmy, that's a JAR!!! Isn't it fabulous? I wonder if Leon could do that gallery???

I''d have just one more suggestion. When looking for setting ideas, I''d focus on those that have either princess cut or cushion cut stones as centers. The reason for this is because, even if asschers or some other cuts can have a somewhat similar outline, their facet pattern is drastically different from that seen in your stone. This would result in a situation where, eventhough the two stones would look very similar on photos, how they''d look in reality (i.e. in 3D) would be very different. That''s why I''m proposing these two cuts (princess and cushion), cause of all the classic cuts they''d give of the most similar feel to that of your stone.

Also try to focus on finding designs that contain large stones and those of similar tones of color to yours, cause things such as size or tone of color (lightness/darkness), can seem like less significant, but can significantly change the overall appearance of a certain design.

Beautiful stone. Good luck choosing a setting.

WOW! Charmy, that is gorgeous - thank you for posting. That one is DEFINITELY going in my inspiration pile!

This is one of the most incredible settings I have EVER seen. *sighs*

That JAR ring is very gorgeous. I think it will be hard pressed for any jeweler to replicate it. I am not even sure if the fabolous Leon Mege can do it. I would love to see someone attempt it. I personally have a gorgeous 9mm round that I want to set like that but I have too many projects on-going ... and my money tree won''t grow .. darn it.
