Hi All,

I am brand new to coloured stones. I love them and want to start a collection, I have a black sapphire but I don't really know anything about coloured stones. I understand diamonds so can someone tell me what are the differences? Direct me to website that can teach me.

There are some good articles under the knowledge tab above. I mostly learned by lurking and following threads. Then I went on to buying books and from there it's history. Hope this helps.

Diamonds are at the total opposite spectrum of coloured gems. Where cut is king for colourless diamonds to sparkle their little facets off, colour is king for coloured gemstones. Pala has a very helpful starter page to learn how to judge the 4 Cs for coloured gemstones and also some specific gemstone varieties. Another factor to take into consideration is enhancement of gemstones. Have fun reading!

While color is king, with colored gems, you really have to be on the look out for TREATMENTS!! Learn as much as you can about treatment on any gem species you're interested in. The problem is that many jewelers will not disclose treatment, and you will be paying too much.

Welcome to color! While one can buy diamonds by the numbers, colored stones are judged by their colors and the poetry in your soul.
