No firm decision has been made yet! What were you going to say, Amy? I''m definitely still welcoming feedback.

Thanks!

You know over the past few days this post and this ring have come to my mind often, then unexpectly I SAW THE RING -- ON A FINGER-- in Macy''s at Northpoint!!

It was wonderful. She had the diamond band under it and it had lots of bling. It looked really pretty and gracious and she looked extremely well heeled (if you know what I mean.) I didn''t have enough nerve to stop and ask her about it, but I have to tell you, it jumped off her finger and said, "Look at me, I am an indepedent woman."

I would keep it.

Lovely to hear a first-hand independent report. Good PS sleuthing skills Pat!

Hi,
I was going to say that its not my taste for an engagemet ring. For a right hand ring, its unique and pretty. I like uniquie for RHR but for engagement, I tink its not something I would want.

I wrote that and saw you were going to keep it so I though it was kinda mean to write that after a decision was made. But you asked ofr honest so I''m giving you honest :)

I also wrote unless you LOVE it know I can promise you it wil lbug you down the road. Go with yo rgut. If you love love it, keep it. But if you are trying to talk yourself into it and I think you are then keep looking :)

I can''t wait to see what you decide and what you end up with :)

Here''s an example of a custom made ring, platinum, that''s substantial but more engagement ring looking to me.

oops here''s specs: (Goldworks) Hand forged and fabricated platinum ring, gothic arch style, with Ideal Cut .70ct diamond (H-VS2). $5200.

You actually have quite a healthy budget for a beautiful ring. I would only keep the ring if you love the design of the ring, as that is what you are paying for.

you know, this ring is interesting. initially when i looked at the pictures, i didn''t care for it. i thought the diamond was a little lost, and the prongs distracted me a bit. i also thought it was yellow gold for some reason......but as i read the comments i discovered it was in fact platinum. that made me reconsider. when i went back to look at the pics and realized i was in fact in need of glasses, i also realized it was growing on me....just as you said yourself and as others have said.

first and foremost, let me say it does look good on your hand, it appears to suit you well. so if it is your taste and you do love it, no worries there. it also appears to be a beautiful diamond, which brings me to this point: if this diamond is a real performer, then that makes a world of difference. we can''t see that effect online, and so the ring does appear, IMO, to be a bit too metal heavy. however, in person with the diamond in action, suddenly the ''heavy metal'' effect is no more because the diamond takes center stage as it should. and what a unique center stage it is......

it also grew more on me when i saw the posting of the wedding band with it. all in all, the effect is a good one, and if you like different and ''fuller'' styles as i believe you said you did, this is a fine choice. you get all of that plus a diamond that meets your criteria.

that being said, you have a GREAT budget and i have no doubt your DREAM/IDEAL diamond/ring is well within your reach. bottom line you MUST be tickled pink about this ring and LOVELOVELOVE it because you don''t want to wake up one day and say ''wow, i had $4500 to spend on my dream ring to wear and admire forever and i settled for this? what was i thinking?!?''

ha this one reminds me a little of the ring I''m having made! Mine has a gothic arch (but ocean is doing mine to more authentic proportions) and the "bowl" under it! I''m going to send this to her, she''ll get a kick out of it :D

You know I kept thinking of your ring situation. I didn''t mean it to sound like I don''t like your ring, I actually think it''s an interesting design. As someone else said I think this may be a ring you have to see in person to judge. And it also seems like a ring that may grow on you

Thanks again everyone! I''m touched that people have been keeping my situation in mind and continuing to offer suggestions and honest views.

Richipat: Cool that you saw the ring in person. I have to say that when I first saw a picture of it, I was skeptical. It was only when I went into Bulgari to try on the ring''s cousin before we ordered it that I REALLY thought ''WOW that''s amazing!'' I DO think this ring looks much better in person. So, I''m glad to hear independent confirmation.

Also, I''ve worn the ring around for a couple of days as an RHR, and got 3 random compliments from strangers, which was encouraging.

In good lighting, the diamond sort of takes over the metal, rather than vice versa since the setting reflects all the fire and scintillation.

I''ve been following your links, looking in shops, etc. and haven''t seen anything that excites me more that we could actually afford (although that 2ct Harry Winston haloed cushion makes me drooool! and Boston Jeff''s Leon solitaire is gorgeous) although I''m still not 100% sure. At this point, I think that if we don''t go with this ring, I''ll get a blingy eternity band for a w-ring and just forego an e-ring. Maybe wear my Danburite as a place holder.

I wish my honey wasn''t away for so long. I would really like to talk it over with him in person. Come hooooome, honey!

I''ve still been thinking about your ring. Have you tried making a list of what you love about it and what you don''t?

I found this one. It''s 3 stone. Don''t know if you''d like the color though.

I Gal --

Yeah, it was kinda spooky to see the ring in person when I had never seen this setting before. You know, I must be one of those things -- like when you have never heard of something, then hear people reference it several times in a row? I think it will look as good on your finger as the finger in Macy''s.

Good luck!!

Late to the thread but... my thoughts, for what they are worth.

It's a very unique and bold setting. And it makes a definite impression.

Is it my personal taste? Not at all. Would I like it on someone else? Definitely.

But as I've remarked in the past, we have similar tastes. While I would be excited at first to get a designer ring at budget, that was high color, and that my fiance liked it. Pretty soon the novelty would wear off and I'd want something more me.

I speak from experience on this. I have a 1.10 F asscher in an X prong setting. The setting is sturdy and simple.. moden. The asscher is geometric and orderly. It's totally him. And I did love it when I got it. Because he chose it, he loved it, I finally had my ring, it was high color, and had great cut. And it looked a little like my Lucida fantasy.

But, the novelty has worn off.

What would I do for your budget? I'd get an (this isn't going to surprise anyone) F (you are color sensitive) oval. Spready and sparkly and less common than rounds. And I'd get it set very simply on a 2mm one sided pave shank by knox jewelers. East west. I wouldn't spring for platinum right now either. WG.

Here's my search for ovals on ERD. Mark will be able to tell you all about bow ties and so forth... and IF you buy the ring and the setting... you get 2% off the setting I think. Not bad.

http://engagementringsdirect.com/search.php?bvlot_id=7560140&page=1&uriflag=search_diamond&shape=O&carat_from=.75&carat_to=1.2&color_from=D&color_to=G&clarity_from=4&clarity_to=7&table_from=55&table_to=60&depth_from=58&depth_to=63&certificate=AGS,GIA&polish=VG,EX,ID&symmetry=VG,EX,ID&culet=NO&fluorescence=&ratio_from=&ratio_to=&price_from=1000.00&price_to=1000000.00&order=price&basic=basic&submit=

I just wanted to add that I chose ovals because they cost less per carat than a round, and yet have the same spread. WIN WIN.

Thanks for the new suggestions ladies!

Gypsy, re the OVAL, we so have just the same taste. Wait till you see my new oval Danburite ring which is very similar! I was even thinking seriously about E/W (love that) but the stone's too big and my finger's too small. Great minds indeed.

Here is my new and final strategy. I have yet to see anything we can afford that I truly love more than this (no 2 ct haloed Harry Winston... waaah!). So,

1) I finally caved, took the ring to work, locked two girls I'm pretty sure I can trust in my office, made them swear an oath on their future diamonds that they wouldn't gossip, showed them the ring, put it on my hand and said 'SO! Whaddaya think? Unique? Or too heavy?'

They fell over and said "HOLY MARY MOTHER OF PEARL!!!!" Or equivalent. They, uh, liked it. A lot. I mean a LOT. So that helps to have two more 'in person' confirmations. They both said they wouldn't have chosen it for themselves, but thought it was gorgeous, very sophisticated, and really suited ME and my style.

2) It's now back in the box and I'm not looking at it AT ALL for one whole week. Then I'll look again and make a final decision.

Independent Gal...you are handling this so well, but I have to tell you, if you are putting THIS much thought as to whether or not you love it, to me that says you don''t love it.

If I were in your shoes, I''d return it and try again with a different setting/stone. Your budget is healthy enough to afford something nice. You can also save some $$ by going white gold too.

HTH and I wish you nothing but a happy ending on this one---whether that is keeping it or returning it.

Good luck!

Hey Diver, I put this much thought into EVERYTHING serious I buy!! (Poor FF, right?)

You should have seen me make my real estate agent crazy when I bought my condo. I saw it the second week, made him keep showing me places for another month. Made him bring me back here about 3 times. And when I finally put in my offer, I knew I loved it and have loved it every single day since. (A year and counting).

I even do this with shoes that are on the pricier side! I am someone for whom the best thing about living in America is the return policies. America!

It''s true that it''s not my dream ring, but my dream ring is (I confess!) BIG and expensive.
9.gif
And I don''t really feel that I absolutely NEED an e-ring, and I don''t want one UNLESS it''s something very special. This is, for me, and in our pricerange thus far, the specialest.

When I open the box again in a week''s time, if my heart goes ''SING!'' I keep it. If my heart goes ''Hmmm.'' I send it back and get a blingy w-band and a no e-ring.

That is the plan. And I''m sticking to it.

Actually I don''t agree that if it''s the one that you will just ''KNOW'' without a doubt. I personally LOVE SO many settings it''s so hard to settle on one. And for me settling on one involves giving up some aspects of other rings i love. I think it''s quite feasible to be undecided on a ring and still love it. Because there''s always so many other gorgeous rings out there that appeal in different ways.

Anyway my .02c

a

Indy-- I think that''s a great plan! And now that I think about it you mentioned that you didn''t care for ovals as a rule. I also bought an oval danburite... and it''s lovely. I can''t wait to see yours. I hope that whatever the result in a week... you get a ring you love!

I just thought I''d put my two-cents in even though I''m new around here. Now that I''m looking at it for the second or third time, I will say that the ring is unique, and it does have that "well-heeled" appearance it that someone else had mentioned. But when I first saw the pictures a couple of days ago my first impression was that I didn''t like it at all. To be more specific, I don''t like the flowery grooved metal thing under the diamond or the funky shape of the band as an engagement ring (a wedding ring wouldn''t sit flush and I don''t like the look of curved wedding bands).

That said, however, I know that when I''ve fallen love with a piece of jewelry and just had to have it, bought it and started wearing it, there have been more times than not that I''ve started to not like it after a day and then by another day or so totally hated it and had to return it. I know jewelry stores hate to see me coming
20.gif
. On the other hand, there have been times when I got something I wasn''t sure of, and within a week or so realized it was EXACTLY what I wanted and then some.

For example, when I got my celebration ring, I knew I didn''t want to spend more than 3,000 dollars. I really wanted the square cut diamond band, but when I drove to King of Prussia to look at it, it was not in my budget. The only one that was in my budget (with diamonds
9.gif
) was the round channel set band. So I got it because my main criteria were that I wanted a ring from Tiffany and Co, and it had to have diamonds. The sales clerk told me that the round stones sparkled so much more, but I still would have gone with the square if I''d had enough money. Now that I have it, I think it''s perfect. The little diamonds are spaced so evenly apart that they look like rounds in square settings. The platinum shows underneath, not skin, so I still get a square look with the brilliance of rounds, and the contrast between the space and the diamonds sets the whole look perfectly. I love love love it. And now I''m so glad I got it instead of the square cuts.

In the meantime, I''d ordered exactly the ring I wanted to stack with it. I couldn''t find it in a store already made, so I had one specially made. I got baguettes channel set in pink gold. When it arrived and I put it on, even though it was exactly what I wanted, I hated it. The pink gold didn''t look right with my pinkish-toned skin. Too much pink on pink, if you know what I mean. The baguettes were set up on a head and didn''t sit flush with my celebration ring (I have no idea why they made it like that, the picture in the catalog didn''t look anything like that) and the most glaring thing of all, I didn''t like the mirror effect of the flush set baguettes. They didn''t sparkle anything like my round diamonds, and they were like a solid sheet. And I thought my first choice for an eternity ring was a square or emerald shaped diamond! Since it was specially made, I''d lose 30% to return it. I was sick because of the wasted money. Happily, my mom loved it when she saw it on my hand, and now she''s sporting her very own Simon G. ring in 18K pink gold with the best diamonds --- E, VS --- she''s ever had in her life. (Dad gets her that J/K, I2-I3 stuff from Kay Jewelers
15.gif
because even though he means well and she''s very lucky in that respect, he just doesn''t know any better, plus he''s pretty much set in his ways).

So, I think you''re doing the right thing by wearing it for a couple of weeks before deciding. You''ll know in your gut soon enough whether it''s the ring for you. Only you can decide if you like it or not, it really doesn''t matter what anyone else thinks.

(By the way, after seeing the picture of your ring again, I still wouldn''t choose it. It just doesn''t speak to me. But we all have different taste and that''s what makes the world interesting. I love to see jewelry I wouldn''t wear . . . on other people. It would be a dull world indeed if everyone looked like me coming and going!)

it wouldn''t be that expensive to just put that stone in a different band, right? Then sell that band on ebay...

But it would devalue the whole thing I think. The value of the diamond and setting together are that they are a Bulgari piece. She wouldn''t be able to recoup that much, I''m thinking with the piece separated. And she could just return it and buy a separate diamond and setting if she doesn''t love them in a week.

The week is over. Did you "sing" or "hmmm"?

omg I know *exactly* because I''m much the same way! The things I fall for quickly have no lasting charm for me... the things that grow become a part of me in a way much deeper... when I first got my stone I didn''t like that the mains weren''t evenly spaced and that bothered me and I thought this can''t be my stone because in my mind''s eye it should be like *this*. Well, in time I felt exactly the opposite and it wasn''t trying to fool myself or convince myself, it was a genuine change of heart. Of course now that I''ve not had it for like 3 months I''m forgetting it and thinking oh its gonna be so ugly... dull, dead... blah... it''s not a stamped and verified round so it will be dull and dark and blah and.... ugh, it will have no sparkle at all. I look at pictures and see a fire and think, oh maybe that was the only one it has? LOL I''m a nut.... I feel like I''m pregnant and I''m going to love my child no matter *what* it looks like but I''m eating too many pickles and ice cream and dreaming about it having the nose of a pig and the tail of a cat, maybe some demon horns LOL

So IG! What did you decide to do? Inquiring minds want to know!

Have you decided?
