Buyer Beware... If you're non-American, think twice before purchasing from the US

i have always been 100% behind the US
but you cant just take over a another people's peaceful country, that's an act of war
Nato would look after Greenland, as would Denmark

It probably isn't our responsibility to be concerned about Greenland with all the interest from foreign enemies. This is a longer read article from Radio Free Europe but I think it is worth the time to gain perspective as to why the USA is interested in keeping Greenland a free country and not under communism. https://www.rferl.org/a/russia-china-arctic-greenland-trump/33273910.html

No country will be safe if communism takes down the USA.

The consumers will soon notice the price rises and realize that they have been conned.
Wow- excellent analysis and explanation of Tariffs and their effects.
But the issue is much larger than the simple economics.
Once someone has been conned… it’s waaaaay harder to get them to see the truth as opposed to substituting another bad guy.
We see this constantly. Any problem?? Oh that’s the fault of the previous administration!! Or the one before it.
Or it’s the news organization.
Don’t believe your eyes. Believe what I’m telling you.
The fact we’re having a spirited discussion about Canada being an enemy of the USA. Or ripping us off. Taking advantage of the poor weak USA….
For many of us it’s “ a butter knife away”
People we are close with all of a sudden adopting these ideas.
How is ANYONE not horrified when people in power “joke” about annexing a foreign country ??????
Sorry. We’re screwed.
If the tariffs destroy our economy- and it sure looks like they will- about 1/3 of us will blame something other than those who imposed them.

No country will be safe if communism takes down the USA.
Ask people in Europe, Canada if they feel safe right now.
WE - the USA - is seen as the threat. No country is safe right now.
And the threat here in not communism. Not even close. Oligarchy and or a form of facism is what we’re facing .

You know there are so many bandied up statements in this this post that I'll let others be the judge of what is factual and what is fear mongering or even worse. Every egregious twist that has been made to statements provided by me makes me shake my head.

I don't have the energy to hate so many people as I see works for many. My hopes are for the future of this country but there is a nasty undercurrent working to take it down. I hope they remember their hand in it as if they are successful. How we became a nation that coddled criminals from other countries and tore down our borders at one point baffles me.

A Russian scientist should never have to worry about any type of investigation while in this country. Huh? And who cried the hardest when NY city was attacked? Talk about needing a reality check.

A renegotiation attempt was made and the tariff deadline pushed back several times. Where are you getting your news?

I'm through with this discussion. I bear no hate toward those who disagree but I do pray for everyone.

@Sunrises Sunsets, you are so eloquent and make such great rational points. I tip my hat to you. I stopped engaging in these political discourses because I’m applied at the level of vitriol people spew when America tries to take care of itself. You do a great job trying to explain and educate.

Thank you!

Finding a discussion like this… very rare.
Most online discussions rapidly deteriorate into insults.
Even though we disagree- strongly - at least we can gain insight into how others are feeling.
Sadly I just don’t see how to bridge the gaps.
We can’t even agree on basic facts.

...but it will benefit the rich.

Always.

i wanna know if you get Greenland who is going to pay for their welfair state, Denmark picks up the tab right now

Right? I mean, I'd be lying if I said I didn't understand the defense strategy involved with this proposition. But how about we make sure Americans have healthcare, housing, and livable wages first...

I agree... I just read through the whole thread, and I think everyone here, with a few minor exceptions, was restrained, poised, and well-spoken (even if I don't agree with some of them). Ella also did a great job stepping in when necessary, but letting us debate some important issues.

Sadly I just don’t see how to bridge the gaps.
We can’t even agree on basic facts.

It's difficult not to feel this way, but we can't stop trying. No one is seceding... we are stuck with one another. And you'd be surprised, for all the protesting, some folks do come around, seemingly all at once. :)

Facts can be skewed and blown out of proportion by those

I'm not believing AIDS funding in Africa will never happen again, there may be far more to that story than any of us know.

You seem to twist yourself into a pretzel to defend anything.

I'm sorry for the confusion. I had begun the first sentence, had to attend to business here and didn't realize I'd left that first portion of a sentence there until it was too late to edit it out.

I don't defend just anything.

Greenland is not impervious to attacks or sieges from enemy foreign nations. People tend to forget Pearl Harbor or 9/11 and the distance of the enemies from our nation at those moments. The tentacles of hate can be extremely difficult to fend off.

I do recommend this Radio Free Europe piece on why Greenland is so important.
https://www.rferl.org/a/russia-china-arctic-greenland-trump/33273910.html

The USA has been inundated with unexpected millions of people and it will take time to assimilate these people into our country and work force. Much money is expended to aid and assist non-citizens and the American bank account is empty and accruing debt is continuing. Thus the efforts to bring back common sense in spending so we can once again support all those who truly need assistance in our country and across the world.

Pearl Harbor…. 9-11 ?????
I’d completely forgotten!!
Please.
Greenland has not been threatened till 2025
I’d bet we all want to get Americas financial house in order.
But destroying our economy seems a terrible way to do that.
Slash and burn agencies. Tens of thousands of dedicated federal workers- veterans. Close National Parks so they can be “developed “
It’s done at this point.
The people in charge “could care less” if auto prices spike. Which they will.
They ride around in limos. Why should they care??
I’m sorry for everyone’s retirement accounts again today.
Surely won’t bother the worlds richest man.

The bottom line is... we, as a country, are broke. I don't know how others handle debt but the first thing our household does is cut out unnecessary expenses.

Example for the some households with severe debt.. The cleaning staff has to go, no new addition to the house for extra sleeping room, no vacations, no extra grocery treats and sodas and the food that is purchased is very economical and healthy, cable TV may have to go, parents use basic plan for phones, only shoes and clothes purchased are when they are replacing worn or outgrown items, cars are maintained and not replaced if not necessary and on and on and on it goes. Our government is no different, expenses and waste have to be trimmed and eliminated if this country is going to survive and get back on it's financial feet.

We are not top income people and until this is straightened out, we know we will cut our budget even more than what we have with all the inflation. But freedom, security and world wide peace and stability mean everything to us. Hopefully, stability will come when equal trade footing is established.

BTW, Pearl Harbor and the 9/11 attack had not been previously threatened either.

It’s just …. Weird.
People who are not economists are sold a bill of goods.
It’s based on a factual scenario. “We need to correct the financial course of the US. “
To do this, we put a man in change whose income is regulated by the very agencies he’s destroying.
Instead of careful, deliberation, and study, he’s slashing and burning.
He fired crucial members of the teams in charge of nuclear weapons. Oops
He’s gutted the National Weather Service so his own company can take over. Sadly people are so ill informed they’re saying “who needs the weather service- I have all that on my phone.!” It’s like saying we don’t need cows because we buy milk at the supermarket.
He’s cut off funding for many different areas of research… Including cancer research. Fired tens of thousands of veterans. The list goes on and on if you watch a variety of media sources, you will learn a lot.
They’re not even attempting to hide the massive corruption. All to give tax breaks to billionaires. Screw the poor people depending on government services

International stability is crucial to all of us. Businesses depend on it.
Tariffs are de-stabilizing. Especially when they’re imposed on a whim. No clear goals.
But even worse for international stability is the destruction of decades old alliances. NATO. We’re pretty much on the outside looking in at this point. We’ve alienated our allies in an irrepairable manner.
Threatening to take over Greenland and Canada.
Incredibly destabilizing.
This discussion ain’t gonna change a thing. The damage has been done. Sadly even people who support the current regime will pay the price.
We all will. Just don’t know what or how bad it’s going to be.

I agree with you, it is weird how people cannot grasp the depth of our debt and think we can just look the other way and it will disappear, sigh...

Where are the billions that have been awarded to billionaires?
Slash and burn is used when the pile is toxic and every decision to make an attempt to delete the pile is met with a lawsuit so any success can be prevented.
The 300 probationary nuclear workers have been reinstated if they wish.
In regards to NOAA"s 12,000 employees, 800 were laid off. That leaves 11,200 workers and NOAA is unable to operate? I'm not familiar with his company that he moved in there to take over but I'm willing to read that information if you can provide it. I can't find it on an internet search.

Where is the US to recover the nickels to pay for the deficit if they can't trim the extras in the budget? Printing more money isn't going to cut it.

Btw, I heard him say today that he is going to try to run for a 3rd term and that would require changing the law back to when Roosevelt served 4 terms. I think he should groom the next candidate and step away. I, personally, have had enough of very old leaders, lol.

.

As far as customs going through baggage. Yes it’s a hassle- we’ve all been through it.
How does that compare with being put in handcuffs and flown to a detention center hundreds of miles away?

And this isn’t an isolated case.
Others can bask in our discomfort

Regarding the Russian medical student.

She was caught at customs trying to smuggle frog embryos into the country. That’s the story. I looked it up and frog embryos are used for all kinds of research including using them as a medium to grow embryo-like micro robots (according to Tufts University). The contraband biological items list are very straightforward rules.

This scientist unfortunately intentionally tried to bring contraband biological items into the country.

If a jeweler on a Visa or Green Card was caught intentionally breaking one of the diamond tracking rules that are out there, say, they were caught with diamonds in their suitcase, would you sympathize, or agree that sending them back was warranted?

I have much more of a problem with sending people back because of speech or identification with a campus group but maybe there’s more to those stories. I also think everyone deserves access to representation and should not be sent to a distant facility in Louisiana, and should not be held without charges.

The story on the French Scientist being sent back, actually involved someone who had top secret nuclear science documents on his phone that didn’t belong there. So, I wish we knew what criteria they are applying to searches, if I was coming into USA, I would heed the warning from UK. EG, follow customs and professional guidelines strictly.

Sorry. We’re screwed.

I agree with you here, the way Greenland and Denmark have been handled is embarrassing and horrifying. And completely counterproductive, IMO.

Key Paragraphs
Of particular concern is the infiltration by Musk’s team of NOAA’s Office of Space Commerce (OSC), the National Weather Service (NWS), and the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Services (NESDIS), and the XXXX(name removed) team’s role in facilitating that infiltration. In his role at DOGE, Musk and his team have unfettered access to sensitive NOAA databases that can substantially benefit Space X, Starlink, and other Musk enterprises.

Musk is working to drastically cut the federal workforce and privatize key government services. Musk’s role in designing the privatization of government space-related agencies could give him an insurmountable advantage over any commercial competitors.

“It is unprecedented to give one corporate interest exclusive inside access to government offices of direct benefit to it,” stated PEER Executive Director Tim Whitehouse, noting that xxxxx has removed the head of the federal Office of Government Ethics, which has the ability to redress conflicts of interest. “The Musk-XXXXX assault on NOAA is driven by greed and corruption. The danger is that Musk’s enterprises could morph into government-sponsored monopolies that would operate with no fear of anti-trust prosecution.”

I have my own personal experience with Musk
I leased a Tesla in 2020. Very cool car ( not for all that long, another story)
When I got it, there were dealerships.
You could call and talk to someone.
That's all gone now.
By the time I returned it, Tesla had eliminated ALL phone services.
Want an answer?
Go ask on a forum or read this article.
SOOOOOO frustrating.
Welcome to the future of the US Government.
Have a question about Social Security ????( if it still exists) read an article- or ask your friends..Don't bother calling, we fired all those people.

As a supporter ( seems you are) is this sort of statement OK with you?????
We all want stability. Can you see how when people in power make these sorts of statements....the antithesis of stability?

This was my full post which was conveniently cropped:

What about my statement confuses you?

I'll have to break your last posting down in pieces since it's quite lengthy.

I am curious Rock Diamond and would love to hear your solution to ridding the USA of the national debt as of March 30, 2025,
  • Total Public Debt Outstanding: $36,217,329,405,606.
We could super tax the billionaires and any money earned or assets taking their total worth over one millionaire dollars be confiscated by the government. We don't need brains and ingenuity and suppressing it is worthwhile. Of course, that would only be spit in a cup on the outstanding debt.

How about putting that same limit on everyone, no net worth over one million dollars and the non-citizens don't need to pay taxes since they aren't citizens and are, therefore, the poor. Hmmm, still wouldn't have enough cash. Let stop paying our congressional people and offering them insurance, they could get jobs outside their office duties. Still not enough, we could sell American soil off to foreign countries and then maybe we would be closer to fixing the debt. I thought of another way to pay the debt, tax all luxury items at 100%. Basic necessities of life would not be taxed, ie: clothing, heat, electricity, food, medical supplies.. you get the idea. Much better than cutting spending and waste, no?

ANYTHING but cutting spending and waste would work, right? But I am open to your plan details.

Kind of happened to some colleagues of mine.
They were in St Maarten with a lot of loose diamonds, on a sales trip.
A hurricane came-0 they had to get out. Instead of flying to JFK, they had to go through Miami.
Instead of getting a customs broker, as they had in NYC... they tried to sneak the goods through customs.
They failed.
They were held up for hours- the diamonds were confiscated. It took almost a year to get them back.
The company they worked for was fined hundreds of thousands of dollars.
But no one was put in a detention center.

I am out of this but for clarification, I NEVER EVER said Canada was ripping us off. That was Rock Diamond's terminology.

I said that you seemed to think it, not that you had said it. Having read your posts again, I still think that this is a reasonable inference from what you wrote. Here are two quotes:

The Canadian trade policy is already in effect if one examines the statistics provided and it has proved to be inflammatory for the USA. Trying to dismantle the advantages established by other countries in trade with the USA is making it fair for all.
(Note: I take it that 'the statistics provided' are from the table showing average Canadian tariffs as higher than average US ones)

Debt and trade balance isn't that complex. Countries that want their goods sold and not ours institute the loss for the USA, it's really quite simple. No one is trying to start a trade war, rather they are trying to have other countries adjust their policies which they will not do without any type of pressure.
(My italics)

Putting these together, I take you as saying that Canada, with its higher tariffs, has 'instituted a loss' for the US. Freely translated, they have been ripping you off. Of course, I may have misunderstood. Or maybe you think that I have got the right general drift, but that 'ripping you off' are the wrong words to describe it. If so, my apologies.

But I'm not here to argue about terminology, rather to point out a common misunderstanding. 'Countries that want their goods sold and not ours institute the loss for the USA ...' This looks like classic mercantilism, the zero-sum view that buying stuff from foreigners is a loss for the home country and selling stuff to them is a gain. Adam Smith wrote The Wealth of Nations to refute this. Generations of mainstream economists have followed him. The mainstream economic view, leaving aside the ifs and buts, is that voluntary transactions can be presumed to benefit both parties, otherwise they wouldn't have been made. This applies just as much to international transactions as to in-country ones.

On this view, trade deficits, or more broadly, current account deficits, are not automatically bad. They just reflect the fact that foreigners have sold more goods and services to the US than they have bought from it.

The simple solution I would like is we don't charge them for import goods to our country and they don't charge us for our imports into their country. Even field.
That would be a good outcome. It would be welcomed by many mainstream economists. But it doesn't seem to be the motivation for the new tariffs. Or at least, not the only one. The threat of tariffs has been used as a big stick in matters not related to trade. See Canada, fentanyl. Whether or not this was a good thing to have done, it goes beyond making an even field for trade.

Motivations aside, eliminating all tariffs would not automatically 'fix' the US trade and current account deficits. In first-pass, over-simple other-things-being-equal theory, with floating exchange rates, tariffs would not affect the balance of trade, because exchange rates would adjust to compensate.

You can't ignore the other side of the national accounts, the capital and financial account. Foreigners see the US$ as the world's reserve currency. They see US government debt as safe. They see the US as a good place to invest. This drives a demand for US$ assets. This raises the value of the US$, which makes make US exports less competitive in foreign markets. All this would happen even if all tariffs were eliminated.

Right, but they were likely US citizens. And they got in big trouble. That’s really terrible for them, I’m sorry.

The ICE process of sending academics - non violent non criminals to Louisiana is wrong. Full stop. Due process and NO long term incarceration is a bare minimum that I think we owe them. We also need clear guidance on who is being targetted. A rationale.

Tim Whitehouse is a dyed-in-the-wool democrat.

And that invalidates ALL his points?
So any progressive should just toss anything a right wing figure says?
He makes valid points about corruption and conflict of interest.
It's mind boggling- we should trust an unelected billionaire- who's not even American.... over thousands of career civil servants???
AND- this unelected billionaire is making billions of OUR tax dollars.
Your point about Tim Whitehouse.....how should ANY progressive feel about Musk??
Whitehouse is a commentator. Musk is destroying OUR government.

The rhetoric has prompted pushback from experts and advocates who have accused XXXXX allies of spreading false claims about the amount of fraud actually found in the program.
No, 150 year old people are NOT getting paid. Furthermore, the people spreading these rumors know they are false.

Since XXX's inauguration, thousands of federal employees have been axed as the administration looks to significantly reshape the federal government. The administration has signaled more firings are on the way, even after a recent court order that found some terminations were unlawful prompted officials to move to reinstate upward of 20,000 workers.
Imagine if you'd dedicated your life to working for the Federal Government.
We can assume that there's some bad apples there. In every population there's some bad apples..
But how about the hard working honest people who are getting axed willy nilly?
If the firing of the Nuclear safeguard people isn't enough to prove this "slash and burn" project is misguided...
YOU'RE FIRED!!! Well, maybe not.

We can all agree that we'd like waste and fraud cut. Not like this.

Foreigners, I believe, see American debt as opportunity in the event the whole thing collapses. The BRICS movement would like very much for that to happen. I don't understand how some of the citizenry thinks everything is fine and the s**t isn't going to hit the fan. The dollar is not exactly shining now and one wonders what investors are looking to win in this situation.

Looking outside the trade lines, how vulnerable are we in the USA if China stops overnight, producing all of the important items we can't survive without and have no way of producing quickly?

We need to bring industry and production back to the states to provide stability and jobs. Why have we become so dependent on other countries for the products we are capable of producing?

Do I think Canada is ripping us off? Absolutely not. Do I think there is a trade imbalance in their favor? Yes. No need for apologies, discussion is good and makes us all think, yes.. even me.=)2

And I am very cognizant of the fact that Canada is wrestling with other problems at the moment. Hopefully, the election will help them.

How about the points I made of so many officials in Washington DC who have inside knowledge and information and have used it in a corrupted way? That's okay?

You don't like Musk, I get it. Your opinion, to which you are entitled, that he is destroying our government. Many do not feel that way and the loudest squealing is coming from those dining and profiting off the bloated pig.
