ugh, no. I am annoyed with myself for not having a clear favorite. And I don't feel well, so that isn't helping haha.

There are pros and cons for both stones. The oval has the bowtie, and the pear gets a bit dark on top in direct light. The pear is giant, but has a better cut. In some lights, the oval is more "lively", but the pear has more of the colored flashes (likely due to the more precision cutting). The other problem is that the pear is almost 4x the cost of the oval, so in my mind I would need to like it 4x more in order to keep it. I don't like it 4x as much, but also am trying to ignore cost and pretend they are the same price.

I keep trying to imagine sending one back and seeing how I would feel if I didn't have one anymore vs. not having the other anymore.

Sorry you’re not feeling well! It’s so hard to make important decisions when you're sick.
I know the pear is an amazing stone, but my eyes are drawn to the oval. I can’t explain why, but I really love it!

New here, so venturing a suggestion from a novice perspective: what are the shapes of your stones in your current collection? For example, maybe you have more ovals than pears and might want to select a gem based on what shape will 'even out the ranks' so to speak.

Or maybe there's a non-color common trait about the rings you reach for most often that might help you make your decision. They're both beautiful though.

Hi,

Less than six months ago my TV began to get the Gem Shopping Network. I mentioned this on PS and TL said there was much junk on it. She used to watch it when different owners had the show. However I do still like some shows. One is from Australia and the showhost shows opals and champaign and colored diamonds. I was actually going to post a question about his champaign diamonds. He price for 1 carat -2carats is 1250.00 a ct. My question was going to be, Is that a fair price?

I think that while the pear is beautiful-- the stone is too large for you. I have no opinion on the oval. But if you get this shopping network I think you ought look at the champaign diamonds. Unfortunately he left for Aust, but returns fairly regularly. I would look for the real deal if 1250 per ct is reasonable. I am very tempted myself although I have sworn off any buying.

Maybe some one else can pop in TL, and comment. Many of the diamonds from the argyle mine looked very nice.. Just a thought.

I find GSN very overpriced. You can find champagne diamonds on eBay for much less per carat. However, I think @lovedogs is looking for a pink champagne color or fancy pinkish brown. Those can be quite a bit more expensive. Yellowish brown champagne diamonds are the least expensive and I suspect that’s what GSN was selling.

Exactly. Plus, even the nicer champagne ones with zero pink tend to be more $$ than 1250/ct, especially as size increases. GSN is typically poor quality for a massive markup. I suspect the stones they are selling are either too dark, horribly cut, or both.

Plus, argyle stones are astronomically expensive. So if anyone on GSN claims to be selling them cheaply, I suspect they are outright lying.

After way too many days of considering, I'm keeping the oval and sending back the pear. I know pretty much everyone preferred the pear, but my eyes kept going to the oval. And when seeing them in all different lights the oval is consistently closer to my ideal color, even with the bowtie.

The vendor was a damn saint putting up with questions and me taking forever to decide between stones. Its aurelia gems on etsy and I highly recommend her!

I am so excited with this project. When I found out that the pear costs 4x the oval, it's not an easy decision as I initially thought. Can't wait to see it come to fruition!

I know it was a hard decision, but I think you made the right choice. It’s going to make a lovely ring!

Yay!! I’m glad you found a stone that’s your ideal color! I was very drawn to the oval too and I can’t wait to see the piece you make with it!

I think the hardest part was that I felt like I *should* prefer the pear, but my eyes preferred the oval. So I just kept doubting my gut. Always trust you eyes and heart!

They were both beautiful stones. I'm glad you were able to make the decision and look forward to seeing what the finished ring looks like.

It was really hard for me to have a preference from the photos since the color varied so much in different light sources. However, you could see them in person, and you knew best in the end! Good luck with your project.

When you know, you know. Enjoy!!

You might want to look for a zircon with an equal number (many) of facets like the diamonds. Then you can compare.

@Love dogs,

I know this thread is from a while back, but where were the pink zircons from? They're lovely.

Kosnar Gems often has some gorgeous zircons. I bought a cute little chocolate one from them that is so beautifully cut it looks just like a diamond.

Thanks, will have a look!

Not at all - the oval was a nicer colour than the pear and ovals are way way easier to set than pears too. I liked the pear and I like the oval and there were things I didn't like about both, for example the pear I didn't like the shape and the bow tie in the oval so you have to look at a combination of good versus bad in both stones, overall it's whatever you liked best that matters!!!
