Hello everyone,
I’ve decided on platinum earring mountings for my 2 tcw studs.

Calling all stud owners, do you like the 4 or 6 prong baskets for your round stones? Are you happy with your choice? Can you post your earrings on your ear for reference?

I have all of my rings in 4 prongs, but I feel they’re not rounded enough. The solitaire I have is 1.32 ACA and I always see it as more square than round.

This is a look I admire and is my inspiration I found on PS. I can’t remember whose it is, I hope she doesn’t mind me borrowing it, but I love how round it looks.

IDJ will be making and setting the stones, Yekutiel tried to talk me out of the 6 prong, says he sells 4 prongs all day long.

Let me know what you think. Thanks!!88DC9162-4E36-4631-89AF-642FBFFE8C2A.jpeg

Its completely a personal style decision. I don't believe there is any practical (usage-related) difference.

I currently have and love 3 prong 2 ctw studs. Because they are martini (which isn't one of the options you presented) they sit lower into my ear which I prefer. But I think your 4 or 6 prong options will probably sit the same height above your lobe.

Before my current pair, I had and loved 4 prong 1 ctw ones. I wore them for 20 years and recently sold to @the_mother_thing (who I hope is enjoying them!)

The pic you posted of the 6 prong ones look lovely.

Which speak to you and your style?

What type of backs do you prefer? There are a variety of back options that all have different feels and also practical / usage differences.

My engagement ring is set in a 4 prong style and my studs are set in 6 prong. I like the way my engagement ring looks in the 4 prong style but wanted the more rounded shape for my studs. Don’t settle. Get what you want.

I like rings set with 4 prongs but prefer studs with 6. They look more rounded and when they spin on the ear it’s not as obvious. 4 prong rings never spin around so it’s fine if the stone looks a little more square but earrings will spin.

Here are the 6 prong 1.25ct studs I got today. I think the setting is lovely and the 6 prongs look perfect. I’m going to send them back to be set in a bezel actually but if I wanted prongs I would keep the 6. Sorry for my terrible ear shot. Pictured here with my other bezel studs.

Completely concur with pp that it’s a matter of personal preference.

I have both styles, but I’ve always felt 6-prongs made the stone more visually ‘round’ and secure too. I tend to set my smaller stones (1ctw and under) in 4-prongs -perhaps to show off the stone more?- and my larger ones are in 6-prongs.

Thanks everyone....

I like the 6 prong look as long as the prongs are filed thin and you can’t see as much metal. I think some ring settings look good with a prong, but for earrings I’m kind of torn.

I held up my rings with both 4 and 6 prongs to my earlobes to see which style spoke to me most.

I just love the picture I posted. I just love how everything is symmetrical and well supported and most of all rounded.

It does seem though that with a 4 prong, it seems to make the diamond pop more.

Keep your input coming....

I personally like 6 prongs, but I've seen IDJ 4 prongs and their impeccable claws do not make the round stone look square. I think if I was going platinum, i would do 4 prongs.

I always think of 6 prong studs as a little more vintage and 4 prongs a little more modern. Not sure if that helps you think about what your style is and why you might like one over the other.

I prefer my studs in 6 prongs as I think the shape looks better on my ear. I’m considering switching one pair to bezel because I Ike them with my bezel cushion dangles. Sorry I don’t have pics as I’m not home with my studs.

i have smaller studs than you will have. Mine are .86 ctw, they are in 3 prong. I also love the look of the 6 prong, but was concerned the prongs would overpower my studs... when i received them, i realized i could have gotten the 6 prong and they would have looked lovely on my size studs. i think it’s a personal preference. It sounds like your heart wants the 6 prong settings! Go for it! The size you are getting will handle them! Don’t forget, we need photos when you get them!!

Mine are in four prong baskets - 2 ctw studs and I really love them. However, if you really want the six prong, go for it!BC1CDA51-1B1D-4430-BE87-EE4E16320205.jpeg

i have 3 prong martini and 4 prong basket for smaller sized diamonds.

It depends on how the 4 prongs are shaped, some can make the diamond look squarer than round. With small stones, you definitely want to be careful of the size of the 4 prongs as it can definitely make the diamond look round.

When viewing stones that are larger on here, i automatically think the 6 prongs, in particular if they are round. They tend to look "right" to my eye.

With the size that you are looking at i think 4 prongs would be ok, but as i said, stones the size that you are looking at, the 6 prongs look right to me.

Can’t wait to see your new studs! Yekutiel just made mine last month. Mine are just shy of 2 carats and I went with 3 prong martini. He suggested either 3 or 4. I wanted the rounder look myself. I will tell you his prongs are so tiny and clawed you barely see them! They are lovely. I am voting 6 if that’s what you love! Post pics!

Agree!

That would be me and my earlobes in the original picture--those are my 4.8 tcw 6 prong martini studs from WF that I still adore to this day!

Love the 6!!

If you are not open to 3 prong martini I vote for 4 prong :) Shows more of the stone and less of the prongs. Makes it less busy and more refined looking IMO.

They are beautiful on your earlobes. Thanks for serving as my inspiration!

But, after much thought, I decided to go with a 4 prong basket because I have one of the stones that I will be using for one of the earrings currently set in a Vatche 6 prong style, and I just knew that I had to go with a 4 prong since too much metal for that size always bothered me.

In the end, I just went with what would look good for the size that I have. Maybe in the distant future, if I ever upgrade from 2.15 tcw to 4.8 tcw, I can go with 6 prongs like yours !

I should have mine in about a week- 2 weeks!

I know you’ve already decided but I think you made a great choice. My 1.6 ctw studs are from IDJ and are in 4-prong basket settings and the prongs are gorgeous tiny claws. All you see is the round stone, not square. My original engagement ring stone was 1.8ct and had 4 prongs but those prongs were so chunky and I always hated how they looked and made my stone look less round. Here are 2 old pics from when I first got them...

Should be beautiful! Like I said, mine are four prong baskets and because the prongs are so small, I just see a round diamond on the ear. Can’t wait to see your finished pics!

I also see that you have decided! I like both 4 and 6 prongs! I think 4 are totally fine in most cases. I might feel that 6 is better above a certain size, maybe 2 cts? But I think the goal is for the diamonds to be seen and the prongs not seen! My current settings are 6 prong and very pretty, but in a way, nothing beats the classic Tiffany 4 prong look on studs to me! Can't wait to see yours!
