Can invisible set princess cuts be re-set??

I have always been told no, they cannot due to the grooves that are carved under the girdle. But somebody here (have racked my brains but cannot remember who? It wasn’t @KKJohnson but a similar inherited ring story - can anyone help?!) had a ring remade & if I recall, the centre diamond went into a solitaire & all the invisible set shoulder diamonds (not channel set, but actually snapped into invisible set shoulder clusters) were reset into a wedding band. Was it by DK?

I have searched the internet high & low, and the only repurposed invisible set rings I can find are reset into smaller invisible set channels of some sort.

My original engagement ring is 12 invisible set princess cuts snapped into 3 quads. One of the centre stones has a crack, so one knock & out they will fall. I loved this ring & the diamonds are beautiful. I’d like to find someone who could make me something new. This ring has been tucked back into its box for almost 7 years now Any suggestions?

I think this is really a question for a trade member with hand's on experience with these stones. My understanding is that there is a metal lattice under the stone. Each stone has cut-out or groove cut into the pavilions that runs parallel to the girdle. Those parallel grooves are what the stone will "lock" into a metal rail from below. Then, the outer rail (bezel or channel edge) is used to maintain the stones in the arrangement and add pressure from the sides. So, the stones look like they are set without metal -- but, its just that the stones are gripped from below the girdle. These settings are really expensive to fix and replacing a single diamond requires a custom cutting (unless the same ring is still being sold by the same vendor).



There is no reason such a groove would make re-setting an issue -- except you would see that groove in some settings. Bezel or channel settings would be the best options. I'm not sure you can prong-set these as the groove removes material below the girdle -- but that is based on seeing only 2 rings like this deconstructed.

Maybe a trade member can comment if they can be prong-set.

Thank you so much for this information - it helps me to understand this ring much better. When the central stone got cracked, the insurance company wrote it off (though agreed to let me keep it for sentimental reasons) as they stated it would be too costly to repair, and now I know why, so thank you.

Hopefully somebody will chime in with options. I was thinking a channel set band, but my eternity ring is already this & do I really want 2 the same?! Perhaps DK’s individual bezelled diamond bands?

I think individual bezels or every half bezels would look really pretty. You have 4 larger and 8 smaller stones. So, you could alternative large and small. Then, use the extras to make bezel earring or halo'd earring. You could kite-set them to make sure it looks different from your eternity.
