I've been hunting now for a good clear but dark teal tourmaline for a while now, and it's a fairly daunting task; some sites have bizarrely low prices, some bizarrely high, and many provided in the above list seem to fall in the middle. This one setter I've talked to in regard to a 'tension' solitaire setting was recommending alphaimports.com to me (after blue nile), but there seem to be a lot of complaints online about this establishment, and their prices seem strange. Then there's Africagems.com which has a more 'professional' feel overall, and some truely nice looking stones... but their prices are quite high (which, for all I know, is legit.) Question is, do we know either should not be in this list? Or... should there be a list of DISreputable vendors that may be best avoided?

Pricing for coloured gemstones can be all over the board, depending on factors such as rarity, colour, treatment and etc. In addition, vendors will price their stones for whatever they feel they can charge. Sometimes, pictures are tweaked so that the stone appears MUCH nicer than IRL.

There are literally thousands of vendors out there, so it is a shorter list to have recommended (note: trustworthy and honest) list instead of a DISreputable vendor list.

I don't know that Whiteflash should be in the custom setting vendors category any more. I inquired about a custom setting and got told that they don't do custom settings for customer's gemstones anymore but only for GIA or AGS certified diamonds. They also told me that they could source a stone for me and then do the custom setting.

I am adding ebay store CaratsGems. I impulsively offered on a stone of theirs and my offer was accepted. Then I had second thoughts about the authenticity of the stone and put in a request to canccel the purchase and explained why (not wanting to be cheated by ebay sellers/unsure if gem was what it was said to be, etc), and they asked what they could do to assure me. I told them a cert from AIGS would do it. They said ok, would I pay for it? I told them I would be willing to pay half. They accepted, and sent it to AIGS and then sent me the AIGS cert number and a photo of the cert. So I happily paid and the stone is on its way. Very nice to find a good gem seller amongst all the distractions of ebay. I find that nowadays, a cert is the only way I am going to feel secure and not taken advantage of.

I am adding ebay store CaratsGems. I impulsively offered on a stone of theirs and my offer was accepted. Then I had second thoughts about the authenticity of the stone and put in a request to canccel the purchase and explained why (not wanting to be cheated by ebay sellers/unsure if gem was what it was said to be, etc), and they asked what they could do to assure me. I told them a cert from AIGS would do it. They said ok, would I pay for it? I told them I would be willing to pay half. They accepted, and sent it to AIGS and then sent me the AIGS cert number and a photo of the cert. So I happily paid and the stone is on its way. Very nice to find a good gem seller amongst all the distractions of ebay. I find that nowadays, a cert is the only way I am going to feel secure and not taken advantage of.

VL, oops, sorry for putting it in wrong section. But as to their toolhaus specs, not everyone is going to be happy all the time, reviews about stone being smaller than a buyer thought is not really a review, and some of the others are inexperienced ebayers with very little buys under their belt. All I can say,as no newbie to buying gems, is that standing behind your stone and getting it Cert-ed is pretty good business.

Yours was not the only ebay vendor in the wrong section to it wasnt personally directed at you.

I looked the listings and there was a lot of photoshopping ans suspicious emerald, um, material.
That's why I looked at the toolhaus. Sure feedback can be variable with some unreasonable customers railing against their two dollar six carat purchases. Tan at least has hundreds of sales to PSers with lab reports to back them up ( I am loathe to call them certificates). I think it was the quartz sold as demantoid that really got me going on this one.

Glad you are happy with your purchase. What was it you got? Any photos you'd like to share?

The stone is a mint tourmaline. I will take photo when it comes and post it on a separate thread, not here. Probably won't be here for a few weeks at least. And believe me, if it does not live up to what it is supposed to be, I will let ALL THE WORLD KNOW, and I will return it.

You know, I think we should decide how we are going to use this pinned thread. I thought that we had all worked hard to come up with a list of vendors acceptable to the group at large. Not all made it to the list. The vendors were categorized and the whole list posted. The idea (I thought) was to keep this list in its entirety handy to the group.

The problem I see with discussing one's personal experiences, or posting their success stories, is that while its good information, it makes it harder to dig through to find the complete list of vendors. Instead, perhaps individuals who want to add to the vendor list can start a new thread about the vendor, then, assuming there is general interest in doing so, add it in to the vendor list in the pinned thread and copy the whole list over including the new addition. That way, it stays easily visible.

What do others think?

Secondly can I suggest that just the list itself is copied and made into a sticky (with a link to this thread for suggested inclusions) so that we can add suggestions to this thread and keep the list itself clean of comments? It then makes it a simple task for Ella - if she sees this thread pop up - to check that the suggestion isn't already on the list. It will also stop unnecessary repetition of the list here so that it becomes the "suggested additions" list.
