So heartbreaking. I gave to HSUS and ASPCA--they got as much from me as the people did via Red Cross and 2nd Harvest!

I was heartened to see some recent pictures of rescues with people holding their dogs over their heads as they were helped....and here in San Diego a group of around 80 was flown in and arrived with a few dogs, cats, and a bird.....I fervently hope that those few haunting cases will be the exception....and that those little furry souls who didn''t make it are frolicking on the other side of rainbow bridge with all of our former pals.

I sent out this email to my friends and family...if anyone wants to copy it and send it out to your contacts...feel free:

We just donated funds for Hurricane Katrina animal assistance to both the ASPCA and the Houston SPCA.

"The Houston SPCA has received more than 600 animal victims of Hurricane Katrina. We opened our doors to 263 canines and felines from the Louisiana SPCA before the storm hit and now we have accepted animals from evacuees at the Houston Astrodome, Reliant Arena and George R. Brown Convention Center.

We anticipate hundreds more in the coming days and weeks. Monetary donations are most needed to help us care for the hundreds of extra animals in our shelter now and those we will be taking in and caring for in the coming weeks and months."

Or donate to the ASPCA and keep updated with their daily-updated Hurricane diary. The ASPCA and other organizations, including HSUS, Best Friends, United Animal Nation, Petfinder.com, are working to identify and log pets in need of rescue in affected areas. A database is being compiled and provided to animal rescuers, and will be posted on Petfinder.com shortly. Donate link is on the left navigation bar.

I know many people are donating to the Red Cross for human assistance....but if you have any extra, don''t forget the animals that have been displaced or abandoned as well.

Please fwd this email to anyone else who you think may want to help.

Thanks!

I, also, sent out a message, Mara. Yours is better, but I still got some responses from friends and one friend promised to send money to the same organization I had sent it to: Best Friends Animal Society. (I am not claiming this is the best organization! I just read recommendations from pet lovers here and chose it!)

Thanks Mara, I did copy that email and sent it to many friends and family. I am hoping they will donate to this cause.

It makes me sick to think about these poor animals and I want to do what I can to help.

I can''t even think about having to leave my little beast behind.

Finally some good news overall here...the word is getting out...In the last 2 days, I have seen 4 substantial spots on major news networks (including one just moments ago on The Today Show) devoted to the pet crisis of Hurricane Katrina.

There are some heartbreaking stories but many good people are working to save pets and care for them until their owners are reestablished. If you are a vet, vet tech or trained shelter/rescue worker, they can use you to volunter; otherwise, money, money, money. Thos eanimals who can not be reunited or who are strays will be listed on Petfinder.com for adoption...and you can bet I am working on my husband like there is no tomorrow!

I finally feel some hope for both the animals and the hurricane victims who love them.

Ditto, Jenn--I was happy (and sad too, of course) to see a segment about the situation on the NBC nightly news yesterday.

LOOOOVE the new Freddie avatar!!!

Thanks everyone for the good information. It does my heart a little good to know how much some people really do care...it seems the hurricane news is just inundated with all the malicious, horrible things that human vermin to do others..some of the things from the superdome...I can't even imagine. And having to leave pets behind...I have cried so many times at some of the stories...my heart breaks for those people.

Anyway, thanks so much for the info...I donated equally to the Red Cross and to Best Friends. Keep 'em coming!!

My med school is setting up a seperate fund for pets ftranded by Katrina. An anonymous donor has also agreed to match donations up to $5,000. We''ve already raised $51,000 in ~2 weeks for the human survivors, I have no doubt that we''ll get at least $10,000 if not more for the the survivors of the pet persuasion. The money will go to the Houston SPCA which has been providing free temporary board, care and shelter to any pets of survivors form the hardest hit states. I just thought you guys would like to know that although we are "people" doctors, we haven''t forgotten about our four-legged (for the most part

And, a thank you goes to the local NYC and surrounding animal rescue. My LSU connection said they took the dogs already in the shelters (to be adopted) to make room for temp. housing of the pets people left behind.

In many instances, their pets are the only thing they have left.

Cute article on CNN, seems like there have been a lot more pet stories on the news lately. Even a pet rescue with Matthew McConaughey on Oprah. Lots of pets have been brought to safe places, so nice to see! PAWS Chicago just brought a bunch up here and the response has been so positive and they're practically all adopted already that they're sending another group of volunteers down tomorrow to get another group of 100-200 pets. Really nice that the hurricane is bringing attention to the shelters and the adoption of pets. I wanted to take in one as a foster, but I think its just going to be too much with 3 already....so I'm actually on my way out the door to go buy up loads of supplies they asked for and drop those off tomorrow AM

Lots of local shelters are looking for extra volunteers and donations to deal with the influx of animals they're taking in, so I"m sure it would only take a little research to find the one closest to any of you interested

Yes, and don''t forget the local boarding kennels. One here took as many as they can and housing for free (these are people''s pets). So, don''t forget those as a way to volunteer also!

A flight came here (San Diego) yesterday w/ 200 dogs from a Katrina-hit shelter in MS. 50 of the dogs were pregnant and were placed in homes and a great shelter here (the Helen Woodward Animal Center) and the rest of the doggies then were flown up to San Fran. The pilot and one of the flight attendants adopted a dog each from the flight
