Here is the scoop:

I visited this ring at an online antique shop for months. Pretty much everyday.
I have wanted a large, breathtaking amethyst piece for years. When I saw this one, with the hand carved detail, I fell hard. The shape, the weight (it's almost 14 grams!), the period of the piece, it all spoke to me (and it was screaming, "YES!)

I studied the photos (intensely magnified so I could see inclusions and all). I read the vendor's description of the ring. Hell, I analyzed it. I looked at her previous sales. I read customer feedback and shop policies. Then, I searched for comparable pieces to evaluate asking price. (I found plenty of antique/art deco amethyst rings that were equivalent in terms of logistics; NONE that made my heart expand like this beauty.) Finally, I wrote to the vendor and asked a million questions. (Aren't I a good PSer? Y'all done taught me well.) After she lowered the asking price, revoked any restocking fee, (in the off chance I didn't care for the ring in-hand), and answered my necessary but surely annoying inquiries, I pushed the button. It just occured to me that all the research, etc. is like CS foreplay.... When I opened the box upon arrival, I was floored. Little sparks of mine cut diamonds glinted in a bed of exquisite leaves and flowers, providing the perfect frame for the rich, regal purple lusciousness that I feel lucky to say will belong to my daughter someday.

After all of that, the ring is actually a gift for my mom. I cannot tell you what a truly exceptional mom and grandma with whom we've been blessed. She is thrilled, if not a wee bit reticent to accept such a gift. She took it to get checked out yesterday, and it is everything promised and more. She has decided to get it sized to fit her ring finger, she says, "so you can wear it on your RH if you'd like to." Did I mention she's generous to boot?

I wouldn't say I'm having issues with the vendor, since I haven't actually contacted her about it. I'm sure she'd fix it for free if I sent it back. But I do wish she would have inspected it more carefully before she sent it out.

Sorry Jstar, I've had some little problems on occasion with her two. Once something was noticeably scratched, and sally refunded me a token of the sale price for the oversight since I didn't want to send it all the way back. My last piece had a slightly loose prong, and she offered to pay for the return shipping and fix it, but I decided it wasn't worth the time.

Yeah, sooo it's impossible to get a great picture of my garnet, for me anyway. So far, here are a couple that are okay but don't really capture it's true color. It's more light green than blue and it's very clear and bright. It looks lovely in the rose gold setting.

My last piece had a slightly loose prong, and she offered to pay for the return shipping and fix it, but I decided it wasn't worth the time.

I received this padparadscha sapphire last year and recently had it set by Stephen Kirsch. The stone is 1.5 carat, unheated, and has a very delicate color. I started a thread on it in SMTB. Here are a few pics...

Great story, and thanks for sharing. The broach reminds me of something Queen Victoria would wear, seriously. Amethysts were very in vogue during that period. That's a beautiful example.

Thank you, faegrace! I've had the stone for a year and a half, so it's taken quite a while to get it set, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it in its new home. Actually, I also really enjoyed it when it was just in its gem box, but this is definitely better !

The antique amethyst ring you bought is gorgeous! Your sentimental story got me choked up-- I hope your mother, daughter, and you yourself really get to enjoy this ring.

Quick update regarding my piece from Sally. She kindly offered to reimburse me for return shipping so she can fix it. I'm waiting at least until she gets back from her trip (early July). In the meantime, I covered the hole with a tiny piece of white poster putty, and it blends in SO much better! So now my ring is wearable until I send it back.

Thanks Aoife! I've expanded my rainbow to include steps between the ROYGBIV spectrum. It'll be a perfect step between blue and purple I think. I recently bought a gorgeous kyanite from a lovely person with an astounding collection. I'm still searching for a good blue-green/green-blue and I have my eye on a purple spinel from Barry from another lovely person with a lovely collection
