I have been focusing on stones so much that setting has taken a backseat. My budget cannot take my stone wishes, much less setting them!!

I kind of like the look of kite set pendants, i'm trying to figure out if this is the one that I would like to set like that!

I'm waiting until Friday to finally make my *big* purchase, and I swear if it has sold I'm going on a setting kick with things I've been putting off for a while because they are too expensive! Well, like one and a half things because said item is not really THAT expensive.

Problem is, I don't know if I can WAIT UNTIL FRIDAY. GAH!

Hi faegrace, I am a newbie of gems in all kind. I have recently contacted a gem cutter for a bubble pink tourmaline. I am not sure what should I look for when buying gems, but based on the pics he had sent me, it looks quite yummy. I am still waiting for it in mail, then I can tell more about it.

If you don't mind sharing the specs, where the tourm is coming from, and what, if any plans you might have for setting it, we're all ears!

Here is the spec of the tourmaline:

Size: 9mm x 9mm
Weight: 3.64ct
Origin: Nigerian

It is a custom cut, I requested to have a light pink color. Can't wait to see it in real life. Hope it is the color I am looking for.

Im no expert, but it looks like a Pretty gem to me! It has an Awesome precision cut! The most important opinion though, is yours. What matters is how you feel when the gem meets your eyes for the 1st time, IRL

The cut is awesome and that spinel is going to be a dazzling light show with the super high crown and teeny tiny table.

On the topic of budget, getting stones set these days isn't any easier on the wallet than buying new stones. The cost of metals are crazy high!

It is done by Lloyd from Clear Cut Gem. I think I randomly found his site. It is a good experience so far and he is quite quick in responding my questions.

In respect of setting it, it is pretty common to go custom in where I live and price is quite reasonable too. But I suspect the setting of it would cost more than the stone itself. I am going to make a halo ring. Haven't really decide on the details yet. Any suggestion?

Well....it's not a colored stone. Which, is a HUGE HUGE HUGE thing for me. But I don't do specs or precision in those ol' boring colorless stones and I'm just not a RT type person.

So...yeah.

Got my red spinel today! It's GORGEOUS. Honestly, it's as close to my ideal shade of red as I could hope to get, a med-dark vivid red, slight purple/pink secondary in certain lights, no brown. It's from Rick at Art Cut Gems. Will post better photos tomorrow as my camera is not with me at the moment. But here are some phone photos to hold over.
