Hi, all...

I thought it might be fun to ask other gemstone nuts what their favorite treasure is, and why. I know we''re supposed to love all our children equally, but....

I suppose my favorite is my pad (posted elsewhere)...when I wear it, which is often, I''m mesmerized by its subtile color shift, and how it sort of "glows".

Next is this ruby. I love it mostly because it is my only " bargain/steal/find". I spotted it in the "estate jewelry case" of a local jeweler. Though somewhat dark, it was very clean, sparkly, and RED, and very reasonably priced. (It''s mounted in a ''50s mounting).

Sometime later, someone looked at it and suggested (probably because it was so clean) that it''s lab grown. Horrified, I had it sent off to the GIA, and the report came back: "Natural corundum, no indication of heat treatment"!!!

JACKPOT!!!

Here''s a picture... anyone else have any contributions???

Today my fav is my millenium emerald cut pink tourmaline. But that''s cause it''s at the jewellers now getting all dressed up and intoa ring for me

Emeraldgirl: That tourmaline is yummy! Be sure to post a picture when it''s "decent" and properly dressed! I was surprised to see you post a tourmaline...with your user name I would have expected something else...

I hope this thread gets more contributions. I''d love to see some treasures from some of the "big" gem guys...Mogok, Richard H, Josh, etc etc etc.....

"Mogok" answered that Q once... you might want to look among his posts for sone jaw-dropping pink things.

I am not old or wise enough to have a favorite - the latest good news is usually the current favorite. The 2003 find of spinel in Tanzania at Mahenge, Morogoro is the current.

If you ever wondered, the nicest couple of pieces at Multicolour are of that breed. Small ones are nice too and cabs just about fantastic (translucent, with nothing else but sheer silk inside, much like the "milky aquamarine" of the previous year). 'Guess I did post a couple of little pink/orange pieces. Not exactly "collectable" in that size. There was much better in the lot where those came from. Too bad none of the serious beauties got stack in my jewelry box.

But... there's some new attraction every year.

My favorite might be your ruby! I love rubies and that looks great!

I''d love a paraiba tourmaline. I like the electric/neon turquoise colour. One day...........

I LOVE parti-colored tourmalines.  I think their blend of earth tones is so appealing.

I love particolored tourmalines too -- here''s a lighter-toned 1.47 carat trillion from my stock. Some combinations can show very delicate colors.

As for having a favorite gemstone, how can a person choose?

Mmmmm, speaking of tourmalines....I''ve been drooling over this one for ages.

Take a look:

Big fan or color changing stones, like Alexandrites... YUM! I got some color change sapphires and can''t wait to get a design to set them in!

Also now a big fan of Padparadschas...When found in good quality (or lab created) they are just GORGEOUS! I blame Leon Mege and his Pad sapphire ring he created (on his site)...it''s just too yummy!!! *swoon*

Just scored this Burmese spinel at the Tucson show because it looks like a ruby!

Wow, they almost look like they have a red fluorescence like the Mogok rubies!

I''ll try to post pictures of the lab created Pad sapphires I have. They will make a earrings, necklace, ring, cufflinks set very happy one day! YAY!

Hi Widget,

The tourmaline is my fav at the moment cause I am excited about getting a ring made with it at the centre stone. I do have a few emeralds which I love lots and lots but I am still trying to think of what to do with them.

HI:

Those are very sweet--I wonder if Raddygast has seen these yet.........

cheers--Sharon

Just to avoid any confusion, the two pics are of the same stone...on the left in fluorescent light and on the right in incandescent light. The stone also holds its very red color even in bright sunlight...0.99ct.
