The brothers seem to have survived their first "alone time" together. The HH and I had to go to dinner--we had plans that we couldn''t get out of, made several weeks before we even imagained there might be another pup in our lives. We put them down on the first floor (which is all marble flooring) with some beds and toys and water and left for FOUR WHOLE HOURS. Not exactly what I would advise to new dog owners, but they seem not to be any worse for wear. And the puppy held it until we got home--and about 30 seconds before we were ready to walk out the door, LOL. Oh well, a little puppy pee is to be expected. I think we''re all ready for bed now, and tomorrow will be another exciting day I''m sure!

Awww, he''s really cute, Dee Jay! I think it is always so good to have two dogs when the people are away a lot of the time! You are really brave to have him loose while you are gone, though! I really like crate training myself!

I was watching my two castaways today, as they patrol ~ shoulder to shoulder the perimeter of our property, and I was reminded how wonderful it is to have TWO. They are a team...best buds...and it is thrilling to watch their relationship flourish.
I trust you will also reep the benefits... TWO FOLD!

Yes, on DKS''s note, andthanks for adopting another adorable "mutt!" My brother and SIL are active rescuers and currently have 12 kitties and two dogs, one of which is a chow mix...she was rescued by my bro''s boss from a quarry and the boss and his wifey couldn''t keep her so my bro and SIL took her in and since my bro didn''t want to alter their male mixed pup (black lab and whatever else, but gorgeous and sweet), they decided to alter the new female. It turned out she was 5 weeks pg and all the fetuses had to be aborted, sadly, but they have a new dog who gets along wonderfullly with all their other fur babies and they just love her, her name is Molly and the male lab mix is named Frankenstein, lol! I''d post a pic but he hasn''t emailed me one and I am far too lazy to go and scan a snapshot on the desktop scanner/printer, ha!

Congrats on the new baby DeeJay! His coloring is beautiful, and I love the name.

Good luck!

OMG I''m exhausted. Between them checking in the middle of the night to make sure the other one was still there, and the early morning "argument" over the sweakless squirrel (the sweaker is long dead... ) and taking them out at six am to make sure Oscar didn''t have to wait to long (although there was a little piddle in front of the fireplace), I am SO tired. I have an inspection at 9:00, and after that I''m shutting myself in the bedroom and taking a NAP. Those two can hump and tussle and do whatever they want to establish the pack order for one whole hour, LOL, while I get some shut-eye!

DKS, we felt a little bit bad for adoping him from a shelter other than the one that my husband volunteers at, but in the long run we felt the important thing is that a dog who needed a home got one. Plus, the Chicago area shelters are good about getting animals from other shelters, and the City pound, if they have spaces open.

Monnie, LOVE the name Frankenstein! There is a little white fluffy dog in our complex named Godzilla and it''s just the cutest thing.

Thanks all for the kind words about the new furry baby!

Aaaah...the joys of a new puppy!

Have a nice nap!

DJ - this post totally made my morning. What a GORGEOUS doggy family you have and thank you SO MUCH for adopting a shelter dog in need of a home. I''m about to head off the volunteer at our local shelter most of today and I will carry that wonderful image of your beautiful, healthy, well-loved rescued doggies in my head when I go

Hooray! Puppy joy! I''m so happy for you! (And, it seems, you are living nearby the River...those are some cool digs!)

We are dealing with puppy crazies too with our own adopted one, as so many of us on here are...isn''t it great??? (and exhausting!)

Yea!

Don't be jealous; they have plenty more and I bet one--or ten!--would be happy to go home with you!

So all seems quiet on the western front. I got back from my inspection and the HH had left the monsters downstairs with a bunch of rugs and water and toys and he put the baby gate up on the stairs. Of course they came running when I opened the garage door, but since then they've been sitting on the first floor with me for a while now chewing on various toys. As soon as the HH gets back from the grocery store (translation: so there is human adult supervision present, LOL) I'm going for a nap.

Oscar learned to sit yesterday and we're working on name recognition. Woo hoo--the joys of fur babyhood!

Apparently I''m not the only one interested in a nap...

aww dee, that pic of them napping is so cute. Dino seems to have make a very quick adjustment to his new brother.

Awhhh,

I love the nappy time photo. It reminds me of preschool and the announcement that everyone must nap. So cool that they are so close at sleepy time...looks like you made the right choice!! Yeah!!

Congratulations DeeJay! Its a boy!!! :D

Can someone give me a little advice on the eating habits of my two monsters... We try desperately to get The Demon to eat HIS food and Oscar to eat HIS (puppy) food, but they don''t go to their bowls right away and when we ultimately do hear chomping and check it out they''re eating each other''s food. Does it really matter? I would think that Oscar needs his puppy food because it is somehow better/different than regular adult dog food (?). Plus, whenever I''ve given dogs different food I''ve always transitioned it by mixing the two together and increasing the ratio of whatever they''re going toward over time, but these two are eating whole bowls of the "wrong" food. Are they going to get sick? They''ve been OK now for two days, but I can just imagine the sicky doggy outcome...

congratulations! oscar is so handsome and the picture of the two of them napping is just perfect!

good luck

DS, congratulations on your new family member. Looks like they are getting along great. Love the napping picture!!

Hi Dee Jay!
Oscar is SO cute, and love that name for a pup! I am so glad it is going well. We had all kinds of issues when bringing Claire home (brought out some aggression/possessiveness in Angie) so I am really glad you did not have the same problem. How did you get them to nap on the covered up part of your rug?! Mine would ignore that and sleep precisely where I didn''t want them to :)
I think with the puppy food, it is higher calorie per volume, to help Oscar grow. So, if Dino is eating it, he might gain weight. Otherwise I don''t think it would cause too much harm, just my opinion. How about separating them in different rooms at meal time?
Good luck!

You might want to try feeding them separately. Demon eating the puppy food may be his way of saying I''m the Boss Dog, since it probably is tastier. You could also just switch them to something that works for both ages. I don''t know if Innova Evo for dogs is like that but the cat food version is for cats and kittens. (I have the large bites dog version and it doesn''t mention it)

Personally I''ve never had any real trouble switching dogs or cats over to a new food. The worst that''s ever happened to Monster dog is really bad gas and somewhat runny stools. But he gets really bad gas if you just look at him funny so I''m not sure it counts.

More pics! They''re sooo cute together!!

Thanks for the advice about the food. We tried to separate them for the first few feedings but then neither one of them would eat anything. Oh well, if they continue to be OK I'm not going to worry about it. Maybe I should mix the food half and half and let it go at that!

Gail, The Demon has this interesting habit that he always wants to be on top of something. When I'm in my office (which is where the napping pic was taken) he won't lie down until I put a towel down for him. And even upstairs in the bedroom if he is lying on the floor (instead of in the bed, where he is most of the time, LOL!) he will go lie on top of a piece of clothing that the HH or I will have left on the floor. He almost never just lies down on the rug as it is. Oscar must have learned from him because now HE only wants to lie on the towels and rugs and things I put down in the entryway for them, so even though the runner in the hallway was a perfectly acceptable rug in the beginning it's not good enough to lie on any more either!

Wow, that''s wonderful training in terms of protecting your rugs! With dogs having oily coats generally, it will probably save you lots of steam cleanings and wear and tear, seriously!

We just moved to a new house with wood floors. The dogs'' toenails are already doing a number on the floors in terms of scratching the finish, so I rushed out to buy some inexpensive rugs to cover the high traffic areas. So, we have one expensive rug and several cheaper ones in our house. Guess which one Angie decided was an acceptable toilet area for the first few days? Yep, you guessed it! Thankfully we seem to have that bit of unpleasantness sorted out!

What a beautiful new baby! He definitely might outgrow the Demon!

Congrats on your new puppy! Looks like the two are getting along wonderfully!

Oh DeeJay, congrats on the newest addition to the family!! How fantastic that the boys get along so well from the get-go -- just adorable!

I love the pictures! Oscar is soooo cute! Here''s my experience with my cats:

I had the same problem with food when we brought home a brother for Zoe back in November. Henry (my new avatar) would eat Zoe''s food and vice versa. I tried to separate them but that was too much work on my part so that only lasted a few times. THen I decided to just let it go. At the time, Henry should have been eating kitten food and Zoe could have moved into adult food (they''re only a few months apart). SInce it was a pain and they''re close in age anyway, I let them both eat whatever food I happened to put in front of them. After we went through one bag of kitten food (which both were eating), I haven''t gone back.

Congrats on your new addition!

OMG, this is so funny I have to share--Oscar has the hiccups! At first I thought he was choking on something but he''s definitely "hic"ing. He has the strangest expression on his face and his ears are bouncing up and down with each HIC. TOO CUTE!!!
