Congrats on your new puppy! He sure is a big boy for his age

Congrats on the new puppy! Looks like they are getting along nicely!!!

HI:

Adorable pooch! Looks like a great "match"!

cheers--Sharon

Well I had an interesting (and RUDE) awakening today. The HH and I kept commenting on how the puppy doesn''t seem to pee or poop as much as one would think he should when we take him for a walk. Turns out he was sneaking up to the fourth floor of our townhouse and using it as his own personal latrine!

I never go up there, and the HH goes up there about once a month when he feels like watching a movie (the fourth floor is where the TV lives) so Oscar wasn''t really in danger of getting caught. I had seen him go upstairs twice; once on the first day (I stupidly thought he was just exploring) and once last night right after his dinner, but I didn''t think anything about it. Well, the cleaning lady set me straight today. Big sigh...

Other than that though he''s been a dream. He and The Demon get along AMAZINGLY. Now their big passtime is to bite each other''s legs and then nip on each other''s lips when the one who is getting his legs bitten finally falls down.

Here they are so tired from playing that they just collapsed in the middle of the floor.

Clever Oscar!

Btw, you have The Demon, we have The Beast.

Awwww....congratulations on your new pup. They look so cute together.

Oh DeeJay, congrats on the new addition to the family. Oscar is sooo cute! Bet he gives the Demon a run for his money!

And three cheers to you and the HH for adopting a shelter dog. That''s just SO cool.

Oh DJ, Oscar is soooo adorable! I''m so glad that he and The Demon get along so well!

As for the dog food situation you were talking about a couple days ago, Oscar really needs to be eating the puppy food. It would be much better for The Demon to also eat puppy food (just give him a smaller portion so he doesn''t pack on any extra pounds

) instead of both of them eating adult food. The puppy food has more protein for a puppy''s growing body.

Awww, DeeJay, he''s so cute! Congrats on the new addition to your family.

I love it that they''re getting along so well! Sounds like a match made in heaven!

Well, I guess the good news about Oscar''s heretofore hidden latrine is that now you know what to watch for and can more easily stop him and take him outside when nature calls. Also, he obviously doesn''t want to do his business where most of the living is going on, and that probably bodes well for housebreaking.

Anyhow...the pictures of those two goof balls together are TOO CUTE!!! Keep ''em coming!

Dee Jay, is the housetraining going better? We have had problems with Claire running upstairs to have accidents (we spend most of our time downstairs) and we used a baby gate to keep her with us. It was a pain, but she learned!

I bought an awesome brush today called the FURminator. It was like $50; I can''t believe I spent that much but it got an insane amount of fur off my dogs. It came highly recommended by several people, so if either of your two are big shedders, I highly recommend it!

Thanks all for checking in!

Gail, the housetraining went pretty well yesterday. After the HH decided to eat breakfast FIRST before taking them out and Oscar peed all over the floor, that is! I had a chat with him (the HH not the puppy, LOL) about his morning routine and insisted that the dogs go out ASAP after he gets up. Our compromise is that he can take a shower and get dressed, and the pups stay in the bedroom with me, but as soon as his belt is buckled and his shoes are tied those dogs go OUT. None of this standing around in the kitchen reading Sports Illustrated and eating a toasted bagel sandwich (which is what he was doing yesterday morning while Oscar peed). He thinks I'm crazy in thinking that a few minutes makes a difference, but it really DOES. Even this morning while the HH was getting dressed Oscar had started to whimper a little bit. No accidents though!

One funny thing is that the puppy doesn't really want to eat right now. The first few days when we got him he would eat his food as soon as we put it down. Last night he didn't want anything to do with it. I did give him a couple of jerkey strip treats and snausages to make sure he had SOME calories. I was reluctant to do that becuase I know from experience with The Demon that too many treats = sick dog, but Oscar seems to have been OK. This morning he ate about a third of his food and that was it. I know that he will not starve himself to death or anything crazy like that, but I do wish he'd eat a little more. He's SO skinny... And I can't just let the bowl down for him to eat when he decides that he wants it because The Demon will gladly gobble it right up and then I have a still skinny puppy and an ever fatter older dog! I wonder if it might have anything to do with his teeth. He's getting some adult teeth in right now and I suppose the hard food could just be uncomfortable for him to chew, but the soft treats are easier?

Dee, just saw this....he is AAAAAAAAAAAAAAdorable! Truly.

Something that helped my dog during the teething phase: frozen baby carrots. LOVED to munch them, and veggies are good for them. Soothed his gums.

Don''t worry - when he gets hungry enough, he''ll eat.

Congrats - he''s just precious!

What a cutie! I love the photo of them flopped down on the carpet. Truly - it''s a dog''s life!

Hope your housetraining continues to go well.

Both of me cuteys are shelter dogs, truly my bestest friends...lol

They make a cute pair! Yeah!

Dee--Your two guys are adorable! They look like they get along perfectly--The Demon must be a very good boy to accept a new little brother like that. I know I''m late, but I just saw this thread and had to post. I love the napping pictures, how sweet.

The whole "if your dog has black or blue in his tongue then he''s a chow" thing is pure myth--the coloring is just extra pigment, and in fact MANY breeds have spots on their tongues. So Oscar''s lineage is up for grabs. I don''t care what he is--that guy is CUTE! I don''t know how this myth started, but it''s been plaguing breeders for years.

As for the feeding thing, I had a similar problem with my girls. I have a 100 Lab mix and a 46 lb Border Collie mix (both wonderful shelter dogs!) so they certainly shouldn''t be eating the same amount of food. They never wanted to eat all of their food at once, so we left it out and then they''d snarf up the wrong bowl. This is what you do: Put their bowls out in different corners of the room and direct them to their proper bowls. Give them five or ten minutes to eat their food, stay in the room so they don''t eat each other''s. THEN, take back whatever they didn''t eat and put it away. Do this twice or three times, and they get the hint. My girls never leave a food bowl without eating their entire meal now, and it really is important that they eat their proper food and intake the right amount of calories. (And you''re not being mean by taking the food away--you''re just training them!)

Good luck, and thank you for posting such great pictures!

Thanks all for the kind words!

We took the pups to the vet today (The Demon because he was due for his rabies shot, and Oscar The Monster because we just wanted to have him checked out to make sure he was OK since he was in a shelter envionrment for serveral months and I know how easy things like kennel cough are transmitted). All seems to be well and we are very grateful!

Haven, thank you for the information on the black tongue thing. I had no idea that there were many breeds aside from the chow with black on their tongues.

Our feeding regime, although unorthodox, seems to be working. We put both of their food bowls down (The Demon's with a little parmessean cheese grated on top, LOL, because that is how he's come to expect his!), then The Demon eats his immediately and Oscar will sniff his, but then ignore it. Once The Demon is done with his food I pour Oscar's food out of his bowel and into The Demons's bowel and then Oscar eats it right up. I have no idea what's going on there; whether it's some nuance of pack heirarcy that I'm not privy too or what, but it seems to be working.

I'm also happy to report that there have been no more potty "events" in the house since Thursday morning. We take Oscar out frequently and it seems to be working. Fingers crossed for that please!

BTW, the puppy is bigger than we though--39 pounds--and the vet is guess on 60+ by the time he's done. Oy!!!

Dee, I know this was a typo but it made me LOL!!!!! I''m glad the feeding (and potty!) regime seems to be working. For whatever reason our dogs switched bowls when we moved to the new house. I couldn''t figure it out at first but now I think they were not so concerned with what bowl they had, but which bowl was closer to the food container, hence the switch when we repositioned things (without thinking about it) in the new house.
Darn, I almost typed "bowel" each time there!

LOL Gail, yes indeed a typo!!!

This morning Oscar decided not to eat his breakfast at all. I give up...

I am however pleased to report that Oscar held it until 7:00 this morning when I hustled them outside. The HH was just lying there rubbing The Demon''s belly and talk to Oscar and I was like, um, do you have a burning desire to clean dog p*ss up off the floor? Because that''s what''s going to happen if you don''t get a move on. Then the HH started stretching and talking to the pups some more *about* going for a walk... And by then I was OUT THE DOOR, dogs in tow. For some reason the HH just doesn''t this first thing in the morning thing with the new puppy. By 7:00 this morning poor Oscar had been holding it for 9 hours and I just couldn''t imagine asking him to wait any longer.

Awe congrats! They look so cute resting together. It''s nice that you have 2 dogs, they can keep each other company-Is demon older?

Congrats on your lovely new pup! And I love your carpet in the above photo!

Dee, they are adorable together!

Ditto!!!

Enjoy your new boy!

5 mo old?? Oh, he''s going to be HUGE! That''s OK, the Demon will still boss him around. Make sure to read him the riot act: when the Demon jumps into the river, that doesn''t mean you jump too!

What a cutie. Know I''m a little late, but congrats!

Rainbow, good point about the jumping in the river thing, LOL. We''ve been taking them to the dog run, but the vines are growing up pretty vigerously over the fence that the HH put in so there is about a four foot high barrier now. Not that vines on a wire fence are a very *solid* barrier, but visually it looks pretty solid (at least that''s how I''m hoping the dogs perceive it!!).

We''re having one of our bathrooms remodeled and we arranged for a dog sitting service to come and pick up the pups first thing every morning and take them to doggy daycare all day. Well, our contractor just told us they didn''t come to get the dogs until after ten this morning.
29.gif
To the tune of $46 PER DAY when you tell me you''re coming to get my dogs *first thing in the morning* I DO NOT MEAN TEN O''CLOCK!!! We''re going to have a little *chat* with them when we pick up the pups tonight.

The new feeding dilemma is that the puppy only wants to eat The Demon''s food now. I tried to be clever and mix in some of the TD''s food with the puppy food and the pup picked it out and left his own food in the bowl. I give up...

Awwww, Dee*Jay, what a cute little puppy he is!

Both of your dogs are very sweet, and make me want to get a new puppy sometime soon.

DeeJay,
Your new dog Oscar is so cute!!! I love the pics of the dogs collapsed from too much play

Oh DeeJay I didn't know that you guys had gotten a new addition to your family - what a sweetheart you have there!!! It is always a little challenging to add a new dog to your household and get all the food and potty training issues worked out, but that cutie will be worth all the trouble.

Thanks Lauren, Skippy and Sundial!

We actually spend much of last evening in the emergency veterinary clinic. I'll spare you the gory details; let's just say that The Demon seems to have picked up some sort of bug at doggy daycare and is, um, unwell. My big fear though is that he's going to give it Oscar. Oscar is problem enough with out adding more pooping and puking to his agenda, LOL.

I did take some more cute pics this weekend (to send to the proud grandparents!) but I can't find the stupid cord to the camera...
