Because my husband and I now have car payments and a baby on the way, I am on a voluntary jewelry/gemstone break. However my husband came into a little bit of money and said I could have $300 for my "hobby". I almost wish he didn''t tell me that because we should just save money, but also there are alot of things on my wish list (too many!).
What would you do:
a) buy a fun piece of jewelry like earrings
b) set an existing stone into pendant
b) buy a loose gemstone (always fun)
d) wait, save the money for a larger purchase down the road

I guess everyone''s opinions will be different, but wondering if should get something I should enjoy now (like earrings) or wait.

It''s always nice to tie up loose ends.Do you have some half finished jewelry projects going? If so what are they?

I''d choose a or b. Either get something new you can wear now that will tide you over for awhile, or set an existing stone into a pendant you could also wear now. But I like instant gratification.

colorchange - there is this web vendor that at least last year had a sale in August. If I didn''t buy anything before then (and they have another August sale) was thinking would like to buy an inexpensive tanzanite there.

innerkitten - too many projects! the thing thinking most recently was setting a demantoid garnet I got into a semibezel pendant necklace (ala whiteflash). However, sometimes I enjoy looking a the stones unset as much as I do wearing them.

Firegoddess- I am also into instant gratification (too much!) In particular while I wear the same 2,3 rings all the time I love to wear different earrings, so feeling earring deprived lately. What I would really love is some precious topaz leverback earrings but think would probably be beyond price range.

Thanks for your feedback and letting me talk to others with gem insanity!

If you choose d,most likely you will spend it on something else. I would go for earrings.Sounds like that is where your heart is anyway.I too like to change up earrings...and rings.I can see the rings and enjoy them.I have so much jewelry that I do not wear. We need to have a jewelry swap or garage sale..

lol! I get tiered of the same things.Does anyone else do that and have items they never wear. Then too...over the years you might get nicer items than what you had years ago...Does that make since to anyone????

Conitta, yes I think that''s true. There was a few things I got (from ebay) that didn''t wear, nothing very expensive, so sold them at a yard sale at least got some of money back and made other person happy.
I don''t really get tired of my rings, but with earrings sometimes feel I need to get a fix, like maybe how some people with bags or shoes, would like one that are warm colored wear with my brown colors, or casual earrings to wear for summer, etc...
My daughter was playing in my jewelry box and broke/lost 3 pairs I wore alot, none of them expensive: a vermeil garnet earrings, bluish tinged white topaz studs, and bezel set czs. So I would like to get a pair of "cool" color earrings like aquamarine or blue zircon to replace my white topaz, and a warm pair of earrings to replace the garnets, ideally precious topaz or even champagne diamonds

, though may end up going with maderia citrine if neither in price range.
I have a feeling once the baby is here such chances will be few and far between, and yes the potential money might dissolve back into the general budget...

I would 100% set a stone I have but thats only because I am dying to set my zircon and have no money for it

Otherwise I guess I would finish up a project or two or buy a nice set of earings since it sounds like that owuld make you really happy! Good luck and you better show us what you do!

i would take the 300 and go pawn shopping. you could get some nice diamond studs or a right hand ring for that money.

if you are in houston pawn shop on fry road there is a half carat old cut in an interesting setting, he wants 200 for it. filthy dirty i am dying to know what is under the dirt.

Wish I could find some bargins here. The pawn shops here are so high and mostly have JUNK! Haven''t been in a long time but it is kinda fun. The jeweler/friend I go to has some consignment pieces and nice ones from time to time.I bought my husband a really nice 1ct. ring at a really good price. I said why pay more cause they will just come up missing and it did along with his 1ct diamond wedding band

.He took them off to do something to his ''70 Super Bee and that was the end of them.Never found them. They have been relaced since then but this time from RETAIL!He is more cautious now.

A friend of mine got a Tanzanite & diamond ring from ebay and it had a diamond missing. She got it for a bit over $100.00.She showed it to me and it was so dirty.I could not believe anyone would have something that nasty and for that matter put it up for sale like that. She took it and had the stone relaced and a prong fixed for about $30.00.It cleaned up nicely, looks 100% better although it isn''t an expensive ring to start with.It is probably in the $600.00-$700.00 range but she got it a great price and is proud of it and I am for her!!!

I have not ever bought any jewelry from ebay but I have gem stones.

I'd either save it up or go with a loose gem (Richard Homer actually has a couple of beautiful concaves for 300).

ETA: Actually, I'd set the existing loose gem.

hmmm kinda late to the game but this could be fun.
Whats your favorite color?

Storm -Nice find! Intense color (maybe too intense). Keep the suggestions going!

Oh no Storm! Now you got me hooked on yet ANOTHER gem website (Duttons)!
One thing I am trying to do is that my husband has been wanting to get himself an electric guitar for a long time, and I''m going to see if I can hold out getting something for myself till he gets what he wants (unless he waits too long

)
at this point kind of leaning towards aqua or zircon stud earrings for myself, since I think the topaz earrings are going to be out of price range.

What color topaz are you looking for?
it isn''t generally that expensive and Id expect it to be cheaper than aqua and zircon.

I agree storm, topaz would be less. I would like the Zircon as I have several pieces of blue Zircon and I love it set in the white metals.Don''t just run accross zircon pieces everywhere and most of the aqua is washed out unless you pay a mint for it.

The blue zircon pair looks very nice. I am leaning towards getting a pair of aqua or zircon earrings already preset (knowing my procrastination for completing a project). Is there anywhere anyone would recommend? I''m actually leaning towards getting a pair off QVC! I know that sounds bad, but I''ve purchased from them before. Going from prior purchases, they skimp on the intensity of the color of the stone so probably will be a little washed out, but clarity is good and cut is decent. I figure I can always return it if too pale.

The topaz I was referring to was imperial topaz earrings (golden to peachy tones).
It''s probably just some prejudice but don''t care for blue topaz.

good imperial topaz can get pricey.

I have seen a lot of stuff from QVC and its mostly low end commercial quality.
Good enough for occasional use but not something I care for.

Thanks Portoar. I have no problem with yellow gold and aqua. I like the overall look of those earrings, just not the post attachments (prefer shepards hook/leverback setting for dangly earring.

I went and ordered a pair of aqua earrings from QVC, should get it next week.
http://www.qvc.com/asp/frameset.asp?nest=%2Fasp%2FIsItemNumberRedirect.asp&search=SQ&frames=y&referrer=QVC&CLASSLEVEL=&cm_re=PAGE-_-SEARCH-_-SEARCH&txtDesc=aquamarine+gold+stud&SearchClass=

If I like them, and understand for that price they will be rather washed out will keep. Otherwise, try to hold out for either getting a stone in August, or wait to save up for dream piece, like precious topaz earrings, real diamond earrings.

Thanks all for your feedback!

oops don''t think that link worked. They are the 2.55 carat round studs for $95, set in double prong yellow gold setting.

Well received the earrings, but not what I''m looking for so going to return them. I guess except for an inexpensive pair of earrings that will be fun to wear for summer going to try to hold my horses. There a few things I have in mind but all more than $300.
The good thing about this site, you become a more discriminating buyer
The bad thing about this site, you become a more discriminating buyer...
