I decided to start a new thread as I have only 7 days to view my spessartite and decide if it is a keeper. Prior to this, I knew nothing about them other than I had no interest in orange gemstones. However, when I received my spessartite, I was captivated by its colour.

I''ve done a google search on Spess buying guide and read Mr. Wise''s writings on Pala. Where else can I get a quick but detailed buying guide on spessartites? I wish Movie Zombie and Mine are still around to help me but I know they haven''t been here for months.

Hi Chrono...

I just checked out your other thread, and I think that spess is absolutely STUNNING!!!

I, for one, would GRAB IT.

One thing I''m not clear on...is it an either/or deal with the pink spinel that''s in the works? Or can you keep them both?

Richard wise discusses spessertites on his blog...you might check it out. I don''t know if he says anything more than he did for Pala.

It sounds like the one you''re considering is great: pure orange, (no brown), minimal extinction, great cut. (So what if there''re no windmills...who needs windmills?

Like you, I never thought I''d be into orange, but I must say seeing MZ''s spess in real life turned me around. I''ve NEVER seen such a brilliant gem. It GLOWED from accross the room...like it had it''s own light source.

Looking forward to hearing what you decide...

I unfortunately am no help, but I LOVE it! I think it''s a gorgeous stone and if you love it that''s what is important.

A local store here has a gorgeous spessarite in a halo that I have been ogling for months. Those stones just look so amazing!!!

I''m certainly leaning more towards keeping it but I need to calm down and think more rationally. I mean, this is a pretty good sized stone (for me, anyway) and so I want to make sure it''s something I will truly love & appreciate for many years to come and that I am buying a quality gemstone. My problem lies in:

1. What is a quality spessartite
2. Is this a good quality spessartite
3. And am I paying a fair price

Widget,
You hit it right on the nail. I''ve never been interested in oranges (to be honest, I really don''t like orange coloured gemstones and personally, don''t think they are attractive) but this baby practically glows and shouts "look at me"!

My dream stone is an asscher cut gemstone since I can''t afford one in a diamond that is large enough to be able to appreciate its windmills, with the cutting style dictating that the final product be very deep and facing up so tiny. I really want a stone with HUGE windmills.

Must...have...windmills...

Well, yes, I could keep both the pink spinel and the spessartite.

I just want to make sure that I am getting a very good spessartite.
