Creating an anniversary band

I'm no expert, so this is all personal opinion, but I think the diameter of the center round and the width of the emeralds is what your eye will focus on, and that already balances nicely with the width of your wedding band, so all you would be doing is adding bulk at the underside with the thicker shank. I also like how the taper defines the last round diamond and makes it stand out more, and you may loose some of that with a wider shank.

Ok thank you, that makes sense. If I lose the taper then I will need 4 claws on the last diamond instead of 3.

I’ve asked to see cads of a 2.5mm band with no taper and 4 claws on the end diamonds and also a 3mm band with the taper and 3 claws. But now I’m wondering if I’m over complicating things?!

This way you will have no doubts. Better to see the different CAD renditions than to wonder, what if?

I would beef the width of the shank a little to 2.5 and if it isn't already, make sure the thickness of the band is at least 1.8mm. I'm super hard on my rings and I want to wear them, ya know? My e-ring/wedder is about 2.7 ish mm/1.8mm and it's just sturdy enough, I hope. Oh, and they both have a slight taper too, which I never even noticed  now I only have to worry about those tiny tiny claws- and I do, everyday.:eek-2:
The delicate designs I admire are so beautiful but I would destroy them. 20220407_142940.jpg20220407_142838.jpg

Yes very true and I really want to get it right.

Yes I do think it needs to be a bit wider, I’ve had issues with my e-ring looking off and that’s 2mm, but more of it’s on show as it’s a solitaire. I’m really hard on my rings too and I wear them all the time, sleep in them etc… My wedding band I think is about 1.7mm thick so I would want this to be similar. Your tiny claws are so beautiful and delicate, I’m hoping for the same!

Good, good, just make sure they're not too delicate. The claws on mine
really are beautiful but I wish mine were just a little beefier (you almost can't even see them on the band) because I really am a klutz. If I were to do it again, I'd make sure to beef them a little more.
I can't wait to see your band done

They look so pretty though! I’m sure they will be beefier but thank you for the advice. I can’t wait either!

Ok so the cad options are in -

1) 2.5mm straight band with four claws on the end diamond

2) 3mm tapered band with three claws in the end diamond

Also confirmed min band thickness is 1.63mm, my wedding band varies from 1.4mm to 1.8mm so this seems ok to me?

Which one do you prefer?

Which one do you prefer?

I thought I would know straight away! When looking back at my initial sketch option 1 is bang on. I was also against the taper in the first cad, but I quite like the effect with the thicker band, seems to balance with the centre stone a little. But, I wonder if wearing two 3mm bands will be too much for my short fleshy fingers?

When you said round with emerald cut... My mind was saying no bueno but now that I see it, I really like it! Definitely the smaller ones!

I didn't care for what I visualized it in my head . But, then I saw your vision and it looks smashing!!
:appl:

So this was quick - I’ve had the cad through! I think it all looks good, although this is my first time with cad work on jewellery! Only thing I’m not sure about is the taper towards the diamonds? Any thoughts?

What about baguettes that taper towards your smaller diamonds.

The jeweller has confirmed the shank is 2mm wide but I think that will be too narrow with my wedding band at slightly over 3mm. Should I match and go 3mm?

Not too narrow for your wedding band. You don't want your diamonds to compete with a thick band it would make your diamonds appear smaller. One way to make diamonds appear larger is to have a thin ring shank.

If you go with the taper it is a match on the band to mine. I really like it. You can get away with it. This bands pic is 3mm 9 stone taper, 3mm gold band straight and a 1.5 mm ouro tapering up to a 3.5mm head. I wear them everyday and never take them off. I have very short and small hobbity hands. It fills the space, but it works. Muffin top on my hands happens even with one ring- it's just the nature of my chub mitts.
Sometimes I'll take ouro (her name is Agatha) off and wear my e-ring and that's a 9x7 with 4mm sides, or I'll take the middle band off and wear ering,ouro,9stone.

Thin shanks don't last under heavy/daily use and will have to be reset/shanked at some point down the line unless you're diligent about taking off your rings. I am not. I personally will not buy and thin shanked rings if I can help it. If you want to live in them, it's best to beef them. 2mm width or more, and 1.8mm height for me. I think the 1.63mm height should be okay and will match your other ring well.

Side bar: I love that ouroboros ring!!!

Aah thank you!

I did consider baguettes for a time, I had seen a lovely ring with exactly that but I was swayed by the emerald cut to reflect my May birthday (even though they are not emeralds!)

Good points thank you, but my current e-ring has a 2mm band and it just doesn’t look right with my 3mm wedding band, so I definitely want to increase the width to either 2.5 or 3mm, even though the band itself won’t be particularly visible (it’s a mind clean sort of thing!)

Thank you so much, this is incredibly helpful and good to know I could get away with 3mm. I can’t escape the muffin effect either and my actual hands are tiny (child size). I don’t take my rings off a lot so it needs to be able to withstand plenty of wear and tear.

I keep flipping between the two options and can’t help feeling that I’m really overthinking this, but it’s my first opportunity to actually create a ring from scratch so I’m feeling the pressure of making the right decisions!

I’m also considering a straight 2.5mm band with 3 claws as I found a pic on PS for inspo (apologies I can’t recall the name of the owner of this lovely five stone)

I think everybody does that, honestly; you're actually moving at a pretty good clip, sometimes it can take months. A few people have spent years trying to figure out what they want to do!
This new variation is a really nice design, I like it better than the four prong. I like the clean line of it. You can't really go wrong here so maybe catch yourself and do a quick gut check. That's how I do it when I know I'm overanalyzing =)2

I'm glad I'm not the only one! The process has been surprisingly smooth so far, I'm not sure what I was expecting!! Yes I think I'm drawn to three prongs more, seems to graduate down to the band nicely even though it's not tapered.

Thank you, I think I need to do that and go with my gut. Nothing will happen now until next week anyway due to the Easter holidays, so if I want I can procrastinate all weekend!!

The three prong does flow nicely. I think you should go for it before you start second guessing yourself again!!

Ha ha, you may be right!

It's going to be lovely!

So I have just been to collect my ring! Managed to take some pics before my husband stashed it away to wrap for my birthday. I have to say my experience with the London Jeweller has been great and very straight forward.

In case this is useful for anyone else based in the UK, they do prefer to source stones themselves, rather than set outside stones, but they will do it.

 It came out beautifully! The combination is just so pleasing.
It's going to be hard to wait for hand shots.

That is beautiful. Come back with more hand shots. :)
