Creating an anniversary band

Hi everyone,

So I’ve spoken to my husband about creating a piece of jewellery with the diamond from my original e-ring for my 40th. There were loads of wonderful suggestions for a pendant, but having discussed it with my husband we have decided on a ring. I got a stacker when my son was born and now my daughter keeps asking where ‘her’ ring is, so I guess this will be a birthday/anniversary/push ring (five years late but nevermind)!!

The diamond is roughly 0.43ct and measures just under 5mm so likely 4.7/4.8mm. I searched for the valuation report but can’t find it, it’s definitely H in colour. I also have two 3mm diamonds from a vintage brooch I can use.

My hands are fairly small (child size really but with chubby fingers!) so I’m thinking a graduated band especially as I have those smaller diamonds I can use.

I really like the shared setting styles that sit low and show off the outline of the stones, but it does need to be practical because of my job/training and the kids. I would imagine wearing it with my wedding ring which is platinum bead set. My thoughts are instead of getting two more rounds (which may be better quality than the centre stone) to look at emerald cuts instead? My birthday is in May so it could be a nice nod to my birthstone? Would that work graduated or just look odd?

Does anyone have a mixed shape graduated band?

Sorry this is a bad iPhone pic of the diamond

Next to the brooch and the 3mm diamonds

I searched my old threads and have found the stats for the diamond (should have done that earlier!), it’s smaller than I thought 0.39ct and 4.5mm, colour is H/I and it’s SI2.

Do you think I can create a five stone with it? It has a lot of sentimental meaning.

sure you can. I can't speak to mixing rounds and emerald cuts for a 5 stone, as I don't think I've ever seen one. I would think you could certainly use the stone from your ER and stones from the brooch which already seems to be missing some stones. It seems like you could piece together your original stone, two of the larger stones from the brooch and then probably two of the smaller ones. Hard to tell what size the smaller ones are but they might work.

Thank you for the suggestion, I hadn’t thought of using the smaller ones! I thought they may be too small but it might work.

The missing stones were used in my e-ring and wedding ring, the brooch belonged to my husband’s grandmother.

I’d be tempted to use it as a side stone for a three stone ring. Do you want to use only the stones from your original ring and the brooch or are you open to purchasing others?

I am open to buying other diamonds but ideally I’d like this diamond (from the original -ring) to be the focus. I love three stone rings, but I feel it would compete with my e-ring and would like to achieve more of a blingy band look if that makes sense?

Makes perfect sense!

Update:

I’ve been to a few jewellers to try on some different styles, I was going between some sort of cluster ring and a five stone. In the end we decided on a five stone. I’ve been to the jewellers today to try emerald cuts in the right proportions along with my centre stone and the 3mm diamonds from the brooch.

I thought I’d want the bigger diamonds but actually trying it on the finger (they had some sticky stuff on a band so the diamonds would stick to it) I felt they competed too much with the centre stone and then felt too large against the smaller end stones. So I’ve gone with the smaller emerald cuts (on the right in the picture). They are also resizing my wedding band and rounding it off inside so it’s more comfortable.

Next step is waiting for the cad of the setting. I’ve asked for low profile and practical, which doesn’t sound exciting but it’s what I need for my lifestyle! I will update when it comes through.

I love the one on the right too! Beautiful concept!

This is going to be absolutely stunning and so tasteful and sparkly. I can't wait to see your result! You're going to be super happy with it!

Thank you so much everyone! Feeling really excited now!

Oooh, yes, the one on the right is going to be fabulous. I also love the band that you're wearing with.

When you said round with emerald cut... My mind was saying no bueno but now that I see it, I really like it! Definitely the smaller ones!

Thank you, the diamonds in my wedding band are from the brooch too so there will be a nice link between both pieces.

Ha ha, I’m glad you like it! I just kept coming back to this idea so decided to follow my gut!

So this was quick - I’ve had the cad through! I think it all looks good, although this is my first time with cad work on jewellery! Only thing I’m not sure about is the taper towards the diamonds? Any thoughts?

Yay! It's a small detail that won't really be noticeable either way, if it bothers you then just have them straighten. It looks great to me.

Thank you, that’s hugely reassuring! Just want to make sure I don’t miss anything!

I like the tapper.

I can't wait to see this when finished!

I like the tapper.

Oh interesting, may I ask why? It is elegant but because my wedding band is quite chunky I was thinking to match it more in style.

I was also going to check the width of the shank, my wedding band is a touch over 3mm - should I match that width?

I like the aesthetic of the band tapering up to the end diamonds. I like how it allows that end stone on each side to stand out instead of blending in more with the shank. Just a personal preference. But this is about what you want it to look like!

I appreciate the response and your perspective. Ha ha, yes it is but I often change my mind!!

The jeweller has confirmed the shank is 2mm wide but I think that will be too narrow with my wedding band at slightly over 3mm. Should I match and go 3mm?
