Hello everyone!
I've decided to buy an engagement ring and found a cushion diamond that I think my lady would like.
I've tried to educate myself by reading through this site and other info on the internet. I'm still not sure if I should get it if it's a good purchase. I'm also looking at a princess cut but I really think a cushion would fit her nicely. I'll post pics of the princess cut asap.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a cushion modified brilliant: 1.09 carat, E,VS1, Polish/exc, symetry/very good, cut is ideal. length to with ratio 1.17:1, girdle is slightly thick to very thick, faceted.

Thanks

Err, I'm not a real fan of crushed ice.

Even if I were, it doesn't look that great.

when you say "crushed ice". Does that mean the way it''s cut cause it''s a cushion modified. There is also a cushion brilliant that I''m going to request for pics.

If I wanted a softer brilliance I would need to look for cushion brilliant? not cushion brilliant modified?

Cushion modified does tend to have a crushed ice look. But there are lots of ways to cut cushions.

I haven''t heard anyone refer to "softer" or "harder" brilliance. A "soft white" lightbulb is a little more yellow-toned than a white lightbulb.

ditto, not a fan

Hi NewIce,

I''m a newbie myself in search of a cushion cut, so I''ve been doing a lot of reading on this website to educate myself. Fancy cuts like cushions vary a lot, as there is no *standard* to cutting them. Maybe I can help and others chime in if I get anything wrong.

It really depends on what you are looking for (or your GF) in a cushion. The "crushed ice" appearance is associated with the more "modern" cushion cuts. Not necessarily a bad thing, just different taste. These cushions are cut more to resemble the sparkle of the round brilliant, but with a cushion shape. In the GIA reports you will typically see "Cushion Modified Brilliant" as the name.

Historically, cushion cuts are an antique cut and a lot of folks on this website (including me) prefer the older/antique style which do not have the "crushed ice" but have a more chunky facet look to them. They can be newer diamonds cut in the "old style" or they may be actual antique diamonds. Most of the newer cushions are cut for the "modern" look. If you do a search for "antique cushion" or "modern cushion" on this website, you will find a ton of information.

This post was particularly helpful to me...you may have to read it several times, I did!
Cushion Question

Also, the vendor Good Old Gold has some great videos that show you the difference...
GOG Videos 1
GOG Videos 2

Again...it totally depends on your (or your GF''s) personal preference in what you are looking for. Hope that helps!!

Hi Newbie,

It depends on what you are looking for, personally I am not a fan of the crushed ice look either - a cushion for me has to be chunky, maybe if you can look at some with a chunkier faceted look then see which you prefer? But the thing is what matters is what you think and what you believe your GF would like!

Thanks everyone for your responses. Especially this video http://www.vimeo.com/2522834. I''m going to ask the jeweler at mondera to see if they can send me pics of a similar size, cut, etc., but with more chunky facets. I think my gf would like either but now I''m leaning towards the chunkier facets.

Different subject but it''s my first time ordering at mondera.com what do you think of them?

Thanks

here are the other two pics.

hmm, try that picture again? (and rename it without spaces or periods)

this is not crushed ice (you see the difference) but it seems a little dark to me (not as brilliant as it should be), especially around the edges.

Both are faceted the first one has a very good cut and this is ideal.

Thanks.

It''s personal preference, but I prefer the chunkier faceted cushions...

Thanks responses greatly appreciated.
I''m going to check out ERD for cushions too. A lot of people on this site seems to recommend there company for cushions.

Any other online stores or B&M for cushions? I live in Northern Cali.

Yes, ask Good Old Gold.com.

I wouldn''t personally buy from Mondera, as cushions have a level of skill to be found, and they are not well known for this.
Definately talk to ERD.

Thanks I found these two on GOG.
What do you all think?

I like the first of the second group you posted. Maybe I missed it, but did you talk to Jon at Good Old Gold? He seems to have quite an eye for cushions!

Ditto - I like the faceting pattern on the second one.

I like them both but I might go with the second one.

Does anyone here have a sample how a diamond like this that is similar in size 1.00 carat range would look like in a simple band?

Thanks

I prefer the second one.

It''ll look great?

They are both lovely...but I like the first...probably because I prefer a more rectangular cushion. And, I love the culet!

They''re both stunning, but I also slightly prefer the first.

yeah they''re both beautiful cushions but I''m also waiting on ERD to send me the picture of the cushion I requested.

Hopefully I can try to get close on a decision on which cushion to purchase. I might even fly out to NY to see these babies myself.

There is a few that I like on ERD but they don''t have pictures to show. Here''s one that I''m waiting on, it has a strong blue fluorescence though.

The link didn''t work for me...what are the specs?

I was initially wary of SB Fluor...but I''ve been reading this topic Fluorescence: Very Strong Blue and its changed my mind a bit. In fact, I think it can be quite lovely!

The link doesn''t work for me now either. I think someone bought the diamond. I got an email form Gary F. at ERD he sent me another 1.54c diamond but it wasn''t the one I wanted. It was under their premium collection. anyways here''s the specs.

Looks interesting...and, I wouldn''t be too afraid of the SB Fluor...could be very nice!

Are you looking for something square or rectangular or either? I''m looking myself and I''ll keep an eye out for ya!

I might have seen this last diamond today. I saw a rectangular 1.5 ish chunky faceted cushion. Mark told me someone was going to see it next week. I looked at it quickly and it was nice.
