Am I just looking at this wrong? I have no experience with what diamonds are supposed to look like once set in a ring. It appears to me that there is a fracture about halfway down the stone. This stone is a GIA rated VS1 with excellent cut and symmetry, so is the "defect" I''m seeing just a reflection from the setting? or do I need to send this stone back with lots and lots of mean words? I''ve uploaded a side-view pic of the stone in its setting... This is my first diamond purchase, am I freaking out for no reason?

Its a reflection of the girdle, nothing to worry about.
Here are some more girdle reflections.

Yes, you are freaking out for no reason.

What you are seeing is the reflection of the girdle of your diamond.

Don''t feel all alone though, this same request can be found dozens of times in the archives of Pricescope. The more you learn about (and obsess about) diamonds, the more you will see, the more you see the more often you will see something that appears disturbing, then you will find that it is normal, only now it is also normal in YOUR range of experience.

That you have learned even to see this puts you well on your way to being a bona fida diamond nut. Welcome to the club!

LOL! Speaking of diamond nuts, I see my friend Storm types faster than I do and gives better answers too.

Good morning Storm.

Thritto that being girdle reflection, it is very common to panic over seeing this for the first time, you are not alone!

drdblum,

I don''t know how to say Ditto to the 4th power.....

...so I''ll stick to ditto!
May I ask you what is the color grade of your diamond?

Best,

hallelujah, and thank you all for your quick responses. I had hoped it was just the girdle reflection, my mind is now at ease! As to the color of my stone, it was graded a G by the GIA. The box the stone is sitting in is an off-white/cream color, which I assume any significant discoloration can be attributed to. I love the fire and brilliance this stone provides, and I hope my (hopefully soon to be fiancee) will love it just as much!

By the way, is it also normal to immediately shine a green laser pointer at the stone to see what happens? cause I did that too... luckily I was wise enough to don protective goggles.

Further, is it normal to now want to go out and buy more stones? This seems like an expensive hobby to get into!

ROFL! In my world, (and if I had a green laser pointer!), that would be ENTIRELY normal!

If people can see your girdle then your dress is too short.

A friend of my fiancee''s had this laser pointer that he paid $100 for. You can point to the moon with this thing! We were outside playing with it one particularly dark night and I pointed it straight into my diamond. Every guy there did this "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW" thing simultaneously! It was freaking amazing!

And I sure would LOVE to go buy some more stones now! Can''t though

Just a caution to those reading this to be sure to NOT point the laser at any aircraft that may be flying by!

I have giggle when I see these threads! We all have a little freaky when we see the girdle reflection for the first time

My darling adorable best buddy was slightly disappointed when I explained to her what a girdle reflection was. She had spent the last few years thinking it was an inclusion in her stone and that she could easily identify her stone if she needed to. I think she liked that little ''birthmark'' that was her stone alone, to tell her that they all have them probably wasn''t what she wanted to here

OK I''ll admit it, I was worried when I saw that in my diamond, too.
