I have a fine 4+ carat (now in ring) demantoid. It has the best horse tail I have ever seen. Color is what a fine demantioid should be. Other than the obvious, Sotheby's and Christie's where would be a good place to sell it?

If it is really a high quality demantoid of excellent color, clarity and size with a fine horsetail, I would only trust it to a high end auction house such as you've mentioned. You might also want to contact Lang in SF to see what they offer and they, in turn, might have suggestions for other auction houses or dealers you might want to contact.

If we ask really nicely, would you post photos please? :praise: :saint:

I am very curious to see a picture of your demantoid, if you don't mind. Any paperwork on its origin and quality? I take it the stone is eye clean but the horsetail is visible only under magnification?

Hi,

There is another auction house that I have seen others use who have an unusual one off stone. The name was Bonhams. Its not as elite as Christies or Sothbys, but the do deal in gemstones.

I would be glad to display an image. I uploaded an image, but can't figure out how to post it. :?:

Post a reply, then click the tab that says "Upload Attachment" further down the page.
Where it says "Filename" click "Browse." From here, go to your own files to navigate to wherever you store your picture.
Double click on the photo you want to upload. The path should appear in the "Filename" blank.
Click "Add the file." Your photo's title will appear under the area where you write.
Click Submit when you're done writing.

Hi,

Forgive me people if this posts. I'm following chronos directions for posting. This is a demantoid I bought, but I am not the OP.
Lets see if I posted my first picture ever.

Annette,
You are too funny. My apologies for laughing at your obvious happiness (and possibly relief) but it is just too cute. Part of the kudos rightfully goes to JewelFreak who wrote the original directions in a different thread.

Congratulations smitcompton on your success, but you do know you are going to thoroughly confuse people visiting this thread!

Especially considering neither have an avatar!

I don't care as long as I get to see pictures of lovely demantoids. :cheeky:

Thanks. let's try:

I see it. Is this your only picture? Do you have any on the back of the hand?

Love the horsetail...but that stone needs some work--look at all the facet abrasion.

*winces* sheesh! beautiful stone but looks like it got thrown in the dryer...

That horsetail is super-cool! Color looks dark to me, but perhaps that's just my tastes - I prefer lighter stones. Does it have a lab report? If you're trying to sell and want the most you can get, it may be wise to send it to a lab that can do an origin report and prove that it's Russian and untreated. But first I'd have a good lapidary polish out that facet abrasion. You will probably need to unset the stone for this.

The stone was worn in a ring, which is not advisable. If it is to be worn, the crown will have to be redone. I will get a lab report. I hope the buyer does not put this stone in a ring. Demantoids are totally unsuitable for rings. The color is on the dark side. Anyone have an idea what it is worth? It is 3.49 ct.

KKayser,
I agree wholeheartedly that demantoids are not a good choice as a ring stone and yours looks to be on the dark side. The saturation doesn't seem strong but this will depend on whether what I see on my monitor jives with what you see in person. It's worth will depend on its colour (purity of hue, tone and saturation), treatment (some have been found to be heated at low temperature to remove the brown component but as no effect on clarity or tone) and origin.

Aww, I have 3 demantoids and 2 of them are set in rings (the 3rd is unset with plans for a ring or maybe pendant). Rings are my favorite way to showcase my stones because I can actually see them while I'm wearing them. I know demantoids are susceptible to damage and not great for everyday wear, but I only wear them occasionally. Also, my stones were inexpensive ($100-300) and if they take damage, so be it!
