I''m sorry to hear this --I''m in the same boat as your hubby, I''m being laid off as of Friday. I think the best thing to do is apply as much as possible and stay positive. I''m looking on the brighter side and thinking ''well at least I can collect unemployment in the meantime.'' Not that it''s alot but it''s something. I''ll admit I''m nervous since my FI is a graduate student on a smallish stipend and our wedding is in November but you just can''t predict or help these things.

Good luck, I''m sure everything will work out for you guys! I keep thinking, it''ll work out...it has to, it just may take a little time.

Oh Sweepea, I am so sorry....my heart just aches for you....it will be ok though...you are right. And yes, applying a lot and staying positive are key. When I was laid off a couple years ago, I did what I called the firehose method of applying. If one word in the job description matched my qualifications, I applied. It worked! Trying to get my DH to follow my advice though is impossible. He would rather do things his own way and I have to respect that. Don''t worry about your wedding, it will all work out. If I can make a crazy recommendation to you...if you have not found your shoes yet, I had wonderful luck at Payless...no lie. I planned our wedding in 1 month and had very little time to look and a very tight budget. I found the cutest pair of shoes there and they were $8. And no, that is not a typo. If you need some ideas, let me know. I had to get very creative since we did not have a lot of moola or time to pull things off. Sending you tons of hugs and good luck vibes for your situation.

Hugs,
ulualoha

I''m so sorry to hear about your DH''s lay off. I am in southern VA, but what part of northern VA were you looking at? I know that if you are in the Alexandria area it definitely opens up all of the job markets in DC. I know that isn''t much of a help, but maybe it''s something. It will all work out, don''t stress too much!

*M*

Hi Poptart,

Thank you very much for your response. I will tell him to look at Alexandria. I don''t know that he has been looking there. I appreciate the lead. I will be working in the Dulles area so I am sure we can find somewhere to live in the middle between the two. Thank you for such a great idea....I really appreciate it along with the words of encouragement!

Project Managers with a BS in ME and MBA,

This is the resume of one great asset to a new company. He is enabled now to find something even better. Where there is a window shutting there are barn doors slinging wide open. Encourage him with positive support. And an abundance of faith you have in his abilities. Empower him to find a new direction.

With that kind of support, he will end up better off than he began. It is just a new chapter in your life...keep those pages turning.

DKS,

Thank you for such tremendous words of encouragement. Have you ever thought about writing a book? You have a very powerful way of writing! Thank you very much for such wonderful words of wisdom! Oh you know, I have wanted to ask you each time I have seen your posts around PS, how did you get your DKS name? That just makes me curious beyond words. Thank you again for your help!

I''m sorry to hear this, but since you were planning to relocate soon, it will be a fresh start.

NoVa has Verizon and a ton of defense jobs he would probably be qualified for if he can get security clearance. that''s a tough, time consuming process, but worth its weight in gold if he can get it. There are also lots of software companies as well depending on what his interests are. This is a good part of the country to look for a tech job. Good luck to him! and to you!

Sumbride,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my posting and provide such a good lead for him. I have let him know about your suggestion. It''s greatly appreciated! Thank you for the words of support...they are greatly appreciated!

Hugs,

I''m so sorry about your husband''s job.

My FI was made redundant 2 months ago. He straight away called a charity here in London that sets up projects in the 3rd World for kids with AIDS and got a full-time volunteer position. It''s not in his normal line of work so he''s learning some new skills.

He doesn''t get paid for it, but it gets him out of the house and keeps him busy. It has also made a big impression at interviews that he''s using his time in a positive manner.

I''m sure your DH will find something soon - sounds like he has a very impressive cv.

Good luck!

Wow Pandora,

Your FI sounds wonderful....what an amazing man and what an awesome charity!! I will keep him in my prayers that something comes along that he loves and is the perfect choice for him. Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. I will be thinking of you both.

Ditto this. He will have lots of opportunities with his education-especially in his field, it makes a ton of difference. Layoffs are very stressful though & I hope everything gets smoothed out quickly!

Thanks so much Vegas Angel....I need to let him read all these awesome and encouraging postings...I think it will make him feel better. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and be so supportive!

I am really sorry to hear about your hubby''s job. My DH has managed to survive four company buy-outs over the years.

That said... with your DH''s credentials, he will definitely be in demand. Northern VA, DC and Suburban Maryland are home to many tech companies and contractors. I am confident that some smart company will snatch him up. Contact some head hunters and tell him to start pounding the pavement!

And hang in there. He will find something.

Hi Joolskie,

Thank you for such an encouraging posting. I really appreciate it! I am starting to see this situation more as a blessing than a curse thanks to everyone on PS. I appreciate the words of wisdom and plan to send them along to him.

ulualoha, you are absolutely the sweetest thing. Not only are you trying to gather up support for your honey to help make him stronger, but you''ve also taken the time to respond individually to every person who sent you both well-wishes. I love someone who can be so personable over the internet! People like you are hard to come by.

As for your situation, I find so much about it encouraging. Obviously he is highly skilled if he was given extra time to make the transition to a new job. The area of northern VA is a great place for his kind of work--I live in central Maryland and I have some friends that commute down to that area every day! I can send his job title out to those friends to see if their companies are looking for anyone with his qualifications (I''ll do it now before bed, actually, so I don''t forget). And seriously, if he''s positive, believes in himself, has you encouraging him and goes out there to find new opportunities, he *will* be successful.

I wish you and your DH well. I live 2 hours west of Richmond, VA. If I hear of anything, I''ll let you know. There seem to be a lot of high tech jobs in VA. I hope he finds something very soon.

Just wanted to let you know we are still cheering your hubby on. You stay positive...

Hi Gwendolyn,

Thank you so much for such a sweet message. It really brightened my day! I appreciate you being so kind to ping your friends in the area for us. I am actually looking for jobs for him right now on the Washington Post website. You really made me feel so encouraged and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Thank you so much Marian....I am so appreciative of the help! I am applying for jobs for him right now and he is taking a break from work and doing the same thing from Starbucks. Thank goodness for advances in technology that let us do stuff like that huh?! Thank you so much again for the help and well wishes! You are a sweetheart!

I have some good news everyone...well given the nature of the situation...DH''s boss told him yesterday that even if he finds a new job before Dec 21st, they will still give him his severance package. Normally you forfeit your rights to your severance package if you leave before the date they give you. I thought that was so nice. Also, DH has an interview next week...unfortunately it''s in CA but he says they have offices in VA (and that is where the job is he applied for...). Please keep your fingers crossed!

Hugs,

I am glad it sounds like everything will be ok! He sounds like a positive man though, and I am sure that he will at least be able to make enough money to survive and stay happy, at the very least, which is good enough in my book, but hopefully alot more will come as well!

Thank you so much WHFSR. It''s actually funny as normally I am the optimist, my glass is overflowing...happiness is bountiful...my DH is normally the pessimist....or realist as he calls it. His glass is usually shattered on the ground. We have all of a sudden done a role reversal. He has been tremendously positive and has been very motivated to locate the bigger and better opportunity! The support I have gotten on here has helped so much to kick me in my rump and get me back on track! Anyhow, I do appreciate your supportiveness...I hope you are doing well out there in Japan!

ulualoha,

I am so sorry to hear this news. I hope something comes along soon. Like other posters before me on this thread we are currently going through this same thing. This is the 2nd time and the last 6 years a compnay he has worked for has closed down and moved overseas.

He is in his 4th month of trying to find employment. He has had numerous 2nd and 3rd interviews but has not gotten the job. He is now older and is interviewing along with some people 10 to 15 years younger than him and right out of college. There are also a lot of people looking for work right now as well. The government tells a different story than what is actually happening in my opinion.

Tell him to take it one day at a time. Worrying about it all at once will burn him out during his job search. he needs positive energy to bring to the table when he is interviewing. Thinking about the long term effects will only drive everyone nuts. One day at a time. Thats all you can do.

Hang in there. Our thoughts a prayers are with everyone going through this difficult time.

Hi Lauralu,

I am so sorry to hear your DH is going through the same thing and that he has gone through it so many times in such a short span of time. May I ask what state you live in? If by some chance you live in VA or CA, Mitre is known for hiring more experienced people rather than people that are early on in their careers. They are an excellent company to work for. Funny enough, my dad works for them and he gets to take time off with pay to go support company sponsored golf tournaments. It might be something you want to check into if you happen to be in those two states where they have a good chunk of their work. I appreciate you taking the time to write me and hope that you have a wonderful weekend!

Hugs,
ulualoha

Thank-you ulualoha for your kinds words and offer of help. We live in Minnesota. I am always saying. There is a reason for this. Every job opportunity he does not get means there is something better ahead. It will take time. We are confident that this will all be a bad memory soon. You guys are not alone. Better things will come your way.

We like to laugh at times and say. Man it''s a good thing that we really do love each other and actually like spending time together and get along so well. We could be at each others throats finding blame in small things very quickly if we did not. We know couples who go thru much less and crack under the pressure.

We try to remember even though he is the one looking for employment. It is happening to us. So we face it together and deal with it together.

Hugs back

ulualoha, Networking is smart, contacting people to ask for their ideas, not for jobs. Your husband can call my husband and a friend of mine (female) who are in business here in the DC/northern Virginia area and let them talk with him. They (unlike I) will have plenty of ideas and some of those ideas may become exciting leads. I think your posting here was a good networking move!

Good luck!

ETA: I meant that my friend and my husband are corporate types, not that they are in business together!!! My husband is a former banker (with an MA and an MBA). My friend is in the telecommunications industry. They have in common long, successful careers and a lot of contacts!
