Ellen, I think we need to go on a little shopping trip together!

ETA: When I finally checked my phone messages tonight, there was a message that my rings are ready! So I might be able to manage to try on earrings one more time tomorrow if I can think of a reason to do so, since they are the ones that reset my current pair! Lol!

I am not used to this, normally I know just what I want, and I get it. But now that I''m trying to pick my forever pair, sight unseen, it''s a challenge.

just take your time and be as indecisive as you want. eventually, you''ll hone in on what''s right and before you know it, you''ll have your new earrings!

Well, Jamie gave me to Brian, and he was extremely helpful. Honestly, the vendors on PS are just exceptional. I was really surprised to talk to him about little earring stones. But it was very, very interesting. I am back to being very confused, though, because he told me that there is a big visual difference between .61 and .74, so I really need to figure out what I want. He said both pairs I had chosen are fine, but he''d check the inventory to see if there were other worthy possibilities. He did ask me why I was at H VS2, and of course I said something about that being mind-clean, and he said that he felt sure I''d be equally happy with a step lower in color and clarity. So anyway, I''m open to new possibilities. These stones are just easier to match up because they are cut to such strict specifications. It''s hard to go wrong if the diameter and color are matched.

Ellen, I may be getting some more pictures as well. So let''s both post them here if we get some. At least others can benefit from our research in the future! And maybe we can even decide what we want! Lol! (If I go up to the larger size, I think those .61''s would be great possibilities for you if you are interested in H color. They are on hold, so one of us can have them!)
DS - I felt uncomfortable getting a ring stone that was in the SI range so i know what you mean there.... but I''d go to SI1 for earrings... unless I thought sometday I''d want to make them a ring or something... If I knew for certain that they''d only ever be earrings I *might* even go to SI2 but I have a thing against inclusions in general so I dunno lol Eye clean to me is "can I see it at all ever with my naked eye" LOL And with RB earrings that won''t have lookiloos trying to look through the pavillion at color hahaha - I think you''re safe with color too :)

J, I remember you were not that impressed with them and am pretty sure you favored the 3 prong basket setting. I have screw backs on my studs and like them (know they are not going to fall off!) but most people on here seem to hate them.

Okay, that''s good that you remember that. I was really focusing on size more than settings at the time. Do you mean 4 prong baskets, though? I don''t remember 3 prong baskets. But again, I looked at so much that day, it''s no wonder it all ran together! I did have a pair of screwback earrings a long time ago and I just left them in for days at a time. I might not want to do that with these earrings, though. If I can ever find the diamonds, hopefully I can settle on a setting!

Yeah, the VS2 thing is just because I can''t see the stones with a loupe in advance. If I could examine them, I''m sure there''d be a fair number of SI1''s that would be fine. It just brings a LOT more stones into the picture if I go down to SI1, and I am not sure how much more complicated I want this to get!

When I first started reading this, two things came to mind:
1. The larger stone appears appreciably larger to my eye, and
2. Why are you getting VS1 diamonds in that size for the ears???

You could get the larger size for the same price as the small ones by going down in clarity. SI1 is NOTHING to be ashamed of -- it is still a very beautiful diamond. And, honestly, there "ain''t" nothing wrong w/ SI2. If you were talking a step-cut stone then, yes, I''d say you have to still w/ VS or higher. But I feel that you are wasting your money on something that cannot be seen when the size differential can truly be seen. Just my two cents.

I just bought a new pair of studs today. They are 1.62 tcw. I have been wearing the tremendous studs I inherited from my late grandmother which are 5 ctw -- yes, 2.5 ct in each ear. While it sounds so wonderful, it really is the most impractical thing there is. When I received them, I told my husband that I really needed him to buy me smaller ones because these were just too large for everyday but he said I''d grow into them! I suppose I have, but when I am at Little League, etc., I feel like such an idiot. Also, while they are insured, I just think it is ridiculous for me to travel abroad in them. I don''t take my big ring (avatar photo 3.29 RB) when I travel abroad, so why would I take these honker earrings???

So, I am travelling abroad again next week and decided it was stupid to take them and made an "executive decision" and purchased "managable", "respectable" sized studs -- 1.62 tcw, antique cushion cuts, mounted in baskets with "scrollwork"!!! I will receive tomorrow and try to get up a photo before I leave town or else when I get back. Oh, I forgot to mention, one is an SI1 and the other an SI2 -- and, as is often the case with antique stones, they are K color.

I REALLY agree w/ Mara in that if you want the larger size, just go for it now because upgrading is really taxing on the brain, the emotions, and the wallet!!!

headlight you BETTER NOT leave town without posting pics of antique cushions!!!!!!!!!!! ::::::::::begggggging:::::::::::

Headlight, oh wow, yes, we want to see a picture of those!!! Gosh, I can understand why you didn''t want to wear 2.5 cts. in each ear on a daily basis! You might have to have a lobe lift or something eventually! Lol! Really, I think the size of your new ones sound perfect! K color is just great in antiques stones, and I think the settings sound wonderful, too! However, I''d love to see a picture of the 2.5''s as well!

I wasn''t looking for VS1, it just happened that there was a .74 H stone and it was VS1. When I did some pricing, it looked like dropping to SI1 was only going to save me a couple hundred dollars per stone, so in that case I figured I may as well go for the VS2. But I am open to very good SI1''s if all else is right with them. And I am with you on getting the right size now rather than having to upgrade. It''s too much work!!!

Hey, the "lobe lift" is actually true -- I do have a "saggying" hole on one lobe and I have to wear either the plastic discs from Comfees.com to support an earring or get those "monster backs" from the jeweler. And forget about wearing wires -- those days are definitely over. I am certain it is caused by wearing grandma''s earrings.

headlight it''s good to see you again gal!! i really want to see pictures of these new earrings as well..yumm!!!!

yanno if you really feel like the 5ctw studs are ''unmanageable''...feel free to send them to ME. i will take very good care of them.

ds, we are leaving today to go out of town for the weekend, so if I don''t post the pic, you''ll know why. But hopefully I''ll get it before we leave.

Ellen, I just thought of an excuse to try on some earrings. I am going to tell them that a friend of mine is trying to decide on earring sizes, and that she (you) wanted my opinion on what size would be good between .5 and .75!!! That will be the truth but it will also help me, too! I''ll try to get up the nerve to ask depending on how busy they are.

Hi,
I actually like VS diamonds better than SI but thats my opinion. I can see SI1 flaws with my eyes. I''m very near sided and without my contacts or glasses I can see freakishly small things. I KNOW That normally you can''t see it with your bare eyes but it bugs me that I can see it.

Plus, I have 2 daugthers and I figure with something like earrings, one day maybe I can give each of my girls one of the stones if I ever decide to go larger. By getting VS and really nice cut she may choose to make it into a ring, even a RHR if she has a diamond from a husband. Or maybe a pendant from each. Who knows, but I personallly don''t think VS is a waste of money!

Oh, and I ordered those .61 each earrings I posted about. So I will let you know what I think of the size! And I''ll do my best to post a photo if you promise not to look to hard at my ugly ears. :) Unfortunately when I was in college I fell into the multiple piercing think that was so big in the ''80s and I have 3 holes in one ear and 2 in the other. Now I just regret it and never wear in the upper holes but the holes look like they are open and usable even though I have not worn earrings in them for at least 14 years.

My earrings are supposed to be here TODAY!!!! I am waiting for the fedex truck. I got my kiddies off to school and hope the driver gets here before 10:30 when I have to leave to get my son from preschool. The truck will probably come when I leave and I will come home to one of those annoying yellow or white ships that he missed me

I like VS better, too, but I just suggested the SIs as an option toward going up in size and staying within the budget. If I had my drothers, all my stones would be D, VVS quality in the size I want!!!
I do not have daughters, so I think that I go into jewelry purchases with a different mind set than a mom w/ daughters. I have thought about perhaps offering each of my two sons one of the diamonds from the 5 ctw studs my grandmother gave me as the diamond for their future wives e-rings (2.5 ct each). We''ll have to see....
I am eager to see how you like your .61 each studs, as my .81 each studs are arriving today, as well. And I just KNOW I will be out when "Brown" stops by, so I''ll have to call and arrange to go down to the local station to p/u!

Interesting comments on earrings and clarity. I know most on here say go with lower color and clarity, that they''re just earrings, and not as important as a ring. But I disagree. After I read this a couple times, I thought to myself, when you''re standing there talking to someone, what are they closer to? Your head. If you''re sitting next to someone, at a table, or bar (which can put you even closer) they''re right there, and if they lean over to say something in your ear, they are literally a few inches from your earrings. So to me, they are just as important. Color more so than clarity though, as long as they''re eye clean.

Maybe part of it also has to do with how you wear your hair. I wear mine up a lot, so my studs are right there for all the world to see....

where my thinking is from though is that I''ve seen a few threads about people grabbing people''s hands and literally inspecting their diamonds, looking at it from various angles etc... now I don''t think I''d put a big black inclusion in the middle of the table on an earring, but I also think people are far more unlikely to grab your ear and start inspecting the diamonds there LOL! And since RB face up white and color is really just seen from the side (assuming a BIC over a FIC), and since earring diamonds are generally smaller than ring diamonds, I don''t think it''s as much of an issue. I agree that hair style plays a part though...
