And if so...how loose?

Technically, I am sized a 5.25. I hate tight rings and find a 5.25 can be a bit too snug (and start to worry about getting it off over my larger knuckle!). I currently wear a solo wedding ring (3.5-8mm width) at 5.5. Quite loose in winter, but just about right to too tight in warmer weather or in mornings/night. It almost always slips of my knuckle easily with a pull, but not with a shake. Right now I am shaking my hand furiously....and it does not spin around AT all (just slips down a bit).

I am considering sizing my two new rings (3mm width each) to 5.75 to avoid too much "tightness" when worn together..they will still be somewhat to very loose depending on day and season but....probably never tight! And I will just have to add a snuggie or something when wearing one alone. Or I could just get sizing balls put in. But...I am not sure if I am ready to make the leap and want to hear others thoughts? I can also get it sized halfway between the 5.5 and 5.75.

I wear my rings very loose. I can''t stand the feeling of a tight ring on my finger.

Technically, I wear a size 5.5.
My engagement ring is a size 6.
My wedding band is a size 6.5.

I think. I could be wrong about those sizes, I could be a size 5 and then each ring is a half a size smaller. I know the ring that I inherited from my grandmother is a size 5, and I wear that on my right hand ring finger. It fits me perfectly, though the band is smaller than my wedding bands, so I think that makes a difference.

Either way, I like them very big. My engagement ring doesn''t spin, but it sometimes falls to one side or the other. I think rings feel and look much better when they''re loose.

I never feel like I''m going to lose a ring, though. However, if I ever decide to wear my wedding band alone I may have to get some sizing balls put into it, because it''s a full size too big for me.

Seriously, my rings are so loose in the winter that I fear they will fall off. When I wear them in the summer, they are so tight it''s hard to get them off sometimes. I don''t think I can help it, my finger size just seems to fluctuate.

Thanks for the reply Haven!

Hm. I think I will go for the 5.75 then. It''s a bit of guesswork as I have never worn two rings together, or a wider band. I worry it will be a bit big (they will definitely be too big worn alone). But, I would rather have to add sizing balls or wear inserts then have rings that are too tight..I hate feeling constricted..ever. A 5.25 feels really uncomfortable going over my knuckle (even a single band). I know my current 5.5 goes over easily but can "snag" the top of my knuckle a tad and also has some breathing space between metal for my flesh. So I don''t think a 1/2 size bigger is too out there if you are able to handle a anywhere between 1/2-1 size bigger!

My fingers are odd. My ring fingers are 5.25-5.5 and my middle and index fingers are more like 7.5 and 8''s!

My current ring is very loose in winter but I don''t really worry it will fall off as my knuckle stops it...just can drive me a bit crazy as it falls to bottom of my finger and flops around. When I squeeze my fingers together and the ring jabs out side and pushes my pinkie out - well I do not like that feeling. So, I can imagine I will have to deal with that and a bit more risk of them falling off in winter as they are more likely to fall over knuckle easier (and will add what I need to stop that). Alone I will definitely have a worry there!

Still better than too tight though. Really, I do NOT like when it feels hard to get off. I am reluctant to put them on if it even feels tighter putting on.

I wear mine loose too. I am a size 5.75 - 6 but I prefer to wear a 6.25 or a 6.5. I even have rings that are size 7 and those fit fine without falling off, but it's because I have big knuckles.

oh, this is a topic near and dear to my heart...

my engagement ring was a size 6...it fit pretty well when I was hot, but was very loose when I was cold...

I lost 20 lbs, and it started getting cold in October...and it fell right off, never to be seen again

I find tight rings so so uncomfortable, but losing my e-ring really taught me a lesson...and DH still hasn''t quite forgiven me
14.gif
(he DID tell me to get it sized like 20 times before I lost it...)

so now, my replacement e-ring is a size 5 (Mark at ERD insisted, once he heard my story), and my wedding bands, which I really only wear with my e-ring (except that I wear my plain band for travel and to the gym) are 5.75, so that when I get pregnant, I will hopefully still be able to wear them...

I wear my rings 1/2 to 3/4 size bigger than my "measured" ring size. My measured size is 7.25 or 7.5, depending on the jewelry store. If the ring has a narrow shank (1 - 2 mm) I order the ring in a 7.75 (or an 8 if I''m going to wear it with other rings on the same finger). I go up 1/4 size for each millimeter of width.

My fingers change size throughout the day, and they change size from summer to winter, and also depending on how much salt I eat! I decided to buy the size my fingers are at their largest, and then if my rings are a little loose the rest of the time, I just deal with it. They are not so loose that they fall off.

Many people wear their rings too tight, I think.

I am so sorry to hear you lost your original ring!

So you were wearing a full size bigger you think at the time (if you are now in a 5?).

Interesting!

I think lots wear theirs too tight too - the jewelers promote it! Though my jeweler wears his loose too, and totally gets it!

So...if I have been sized anywhere from a 5 (in winter after walking outside) to a 5.5 (warm hands and also what I wear right now in my 3.5mm to 8mm(in front but there are spaces) band) and these are two 3mm bands that I am wearing together....would your math be closer to 5.75 or over that even if you were "in my shoes"? As if I go up a 1/4 for each mm (6mm) that would be awfully big...ha! I tried on a narrow 2mm size 6 sizing band (16.5mm diameter) and it was really big..of course it was also 4mm narrower than what I will be wearing.

Thanks for the sympathy, RK! I love my replacement ring (I am terrible and still don''t have photos of it even though I got it back in October

), but I''ll never see the ring my DH picked out for me again...

I think I was more of a 5 3/4 than a 6 when I first got the ring, but after losing so much weight (even though I''ve put several pounds back on since then), I am definitely a 5 when I am cold. My fingers expand and contract SO much depending on the weather and my salt intake, so it is hard to decide how to wear my rings. After I lost my first e-ring, though, I decided that I''d rather be a little uncomfortable when I''m hot than risk losing it when I''m cold.

Hi RaiKai,
I think we have the same size fingers. I have my rings sized 5.5, but they are hard to put o nin the summer, and can be easeily slipped on and off in the winter. I have large knuckles, but once past the knuckles my rings are pretty loose, that makes me think tha the base of my fingers are probably only a 5.

Since I knew my rings have the tendnecy to spin, I had my e-ring setting made with a Euroshank, my anniversary band that I wear with my e-ring does not have the euroshank, so it spins freely, and the side with 7 shared-prong diamonds is always facing my palm grrrrrr..................

Yes, most jewelers promote it; it's weird. But, of course, they don't want you to lose the ring and blame it on them (because it was sized too big!).

The 1/4 size per millimeter only works for one ring -- does that make sense? So think of it in terms of a wedding band. If I order a wedding band, 2 mm wide, I will order it in a size 7.75 or 8 (8 if I'm going to wear it with another ring; 7.75 if I'm going to wear it alone). If I order a 3 mm band, I'll need an 8 or 8 1/4, a 4 mm band 8/14 or 8/12, a 5 mm band...etc. But, of course, at some point, this simple math doesn't work, because you get to the point where your ring will slide off. So it's only a rough estimate, and it really has to do with both the width and thickness (height) of the ring. Thicker rings need to be larger, in my experience.

But stacking a 2 mm with a 3 mm and another 2mm, or some other combination of more than one ring, where you end up with 7+ millimeters of rings, I think you'd want to consider getting each ring in a size 5.75 - 6, knowing that you probably won't be able to wear the rings alone without them being pretty loose.

I always thought I was a 4.5 but when we had my e-ring made the jeweler said it should be made at a 4.25 to fit and not spin. I actually questioned him on it and he said trust him. So I did. Fast forward 3.5 years. It fits fine but it can be TIGHT on some days. I really, really wish I''d stuck to my guns and had it made at 4.5.

And that is exactly the feeling I detest - that dragging over the knuckle part that jewelers often seem to insist is best...ugh...it is like nails on a chalkboard for me!

I also lost a bit of weight and my rings got way too loose... getting to the point where if I was taking my hand out of my pocket they would come off! I have pave and so my rings cannot be sized, so I got a horseshoe sizer put in.
I will admit that I also like the feeling of looser rings better, and with the sizer it can be a little on the tight side, but I really did not want to chance loosing it.

I think it makes sense for them to promote it be "tight" for that reason, but it totally ignores personal comfort. I went to get sized not that long ago (with warm hands!) and the lady stuck a thin sizer on me and insisted...INSISTED....I was no more than a 5.5. A 6 was obviously way too big as she said, and I agree it WAS big. However, I was quite firm a 5.5 on a wide band (or stacking thinner bands) would be tight as my current band gets tight. While she said...true....she still said she disagreed and a 5.5 was fine. She seemed unaware entirely that there are options in between (i.e. 5.5+, 5.75, 6-). She made sure to write a 5.5 down on a card for me so I would not forget?!?! I think they only really care about how it goes over the knuckle (or doesn't).

Anyway, thanks for the explanation...it makes total sense (I think!). And almost immediately after reading your post...I stopped back in the jewelers.

Fortunately my hands were very warm at this point as it is rather hot outside and I was doing some running around on my lunch hour. My own 5.5 ring was fitting snugly without pinching at the time. My jewelery guy was busy with other clients but I talked to another lady there and she pulled out my rings and had me try on sizes again. When I said I was going to be wearing both together and was concerned how they fit then..she found one of the wider width sizing things for me in a drawer somewhere too (how wide are they anyway - anyone know?). She too at first insisted on a 5.5 since...of course..."it should be a bit snug going over knuckle" (and 6 was too big for sure...even in a thicker ring it would have slid off) and then I told her I wear a 5.5 and in Vegas this weekend had problem getting it off once my knuckle swelled up....she changed my order to a 5.75 right then and there!
36.gif

Both rings together will be under 6mm total together (I think one is 3mm and one is 2.5mm) and I do not plan on wearing them with any other rings. They are a bit thicker obviously then the sizing tool I used so there are rare times if my hands are REALLY swollen they might be a bit more snug than I like, but this way they also should not fall right off over my knuckle when my hands are cool - which is closer to my normal experience anyway. I have to compromise somewhere or else it will be like wearing bangles on my fingers!

I have to say, I really appreciate this local independent jewelers. They are really quite professional, actually do have some very neat stuff in there (lots of independent artist stuff) and seem to listen really well to their customers wants and peculiarities! They do send out really, really complicated stuff to another place in the next over province but I appreciate that they do if need be! I had a few places absolutely refuse to even touch it and they really should not be that complicated to work with? A couple little special considerations but nothing far out there.

The ring DH gave me was a 5.5 and I wore it like that for almost a year. My WB is a 5.5 but both shanks are pretty slim (2.5 mm and 2 mm) so I didn''t feel the need to size up when wearing the rings together. In the winter they were sooo loose and after hearng alli''s sad story I went and took advantage of my one free resizing. He only did my e-ring since I wear that on top and left the WB at a 5.5. Now I have a 5.25 size e-ring that is reallly tight in the morning and loose when its cold, and a 5.5 WB that I can easily get on and off, even when my fingers are at their puffiest. I plan on getting a 5-stone band to add to the mix and I am going to et a 5.75 because I will alternate between my RH and LH and my RH is about a 1/2 size bigger than my left.

So in all that rambling, I opted to wear my e-ring tight in the morning for safety rather than comfort. If you are worried about the rings stacked together perhaps you can get the one you plan on putting on top a 1/4 size less than the rest like I did. I feel like my rings are very secure like this.

Yes!! I hate finger muffin top. Just looking at people''s fingers when they have too-tight rings makes me queasy with panic. Seriously.

My wedding ring/e-ring is a 6.25 and they are loose on me. When I''m really cold they can almost fall off, when my fingers are a bit swollen, they fight tightly but no muffin top and I can still get them off.

I like them a bit loose. I'm a 5.5 but like to size up a half (~6).

claritek--I''m so happy you had your ring sized...it''s such a beauty, and it is just so sad to lose an e-ring (I mean, yes, I know people have horrible tragedies in their lives and losing a piece of jewelry hardly ranks...but it is still a crappy thing to have happen!)

I wear my engagement ring one size too large. I like the comfort, and I also prefer the look of a loose ring.

My wedding band is tighter. I can wear it on my other, larger hand if I want.
I also wear my engagement ring and wedding ring in the wrong order. I don''t have to worry about the engagement ring falling off as a result.

I am measured at an 8.75-9 But the smallest I will actually wear is a 9.5. I hate the tight feeling and the look of squished finger.

No, I hate wearing them loose and I'm always paranoid they're going to fall off so I put up with a bit of sausage finger in the summer (my fingers are pretty long and thin anyway, so it doesn't really matter to me). Also, my fingers are tapered, which means my knuckles are small and don't stand in the way of a ring coming off, so I need to get them tight enough to fit onto the fleshy part of my finger. With one thin band it never bothers me, but if I wear both of my rings and go for a long walk my fingers swell and it's kind of annoying.

I love wearing my one thin wband at a size 5.5 (measured size) but I think I may get my ering sized up to a 5.75 so it's more comfortable when I wear them together. I also have kind of a notch in my finger, if that makes sense, where one thin band fits, so it's kind of loose in that spot, but then makes my ering sit on the fattiest part of my finger and it's a bit tight. Not sure if that made sense
19.gif

I kind of wish I had larger knuckles so I could wear a bigger size without worrying about it falling off. DH's ring is fairly loose on the fleshy part of his finger, but *just* fits over his knuckle.

Yes, makes sense! I have more padding under my finger nearer my knuckle, and a when I wear more than one ring, the ring on top gets pushed to this "fatter" part.

DH has some extra high "webbing" between his fingers so he has really limited space he can comfortably wear a ring. He can''t wear a ring that is wide all the way around like traditional wedding bands (unless it was really narrow - more of a typical woman''s width ring). His has to taper around the sides and to the back to about 3mm or so.

I was told I was a size 7.25. Wearing a 7.25 I have muffin top on my finger! No thank you. I am getting my ering in an 8. 8 is comfortable most of the time but when it''s hot it''s still tight and when it''s cold it''s nearly falling off.

How coincidental is that? My husband has the same problem. He has really high webbing, I call him aquaman! He wears a 6mm ring, but it practically goes up to his knuckle!

My left ring finger is a 7.25, if I wear anything larger than a 7.5 they fall off due to the shape of my finger!! My right hand is chunky. it''s an 8.25, but I prefer them in the 8.5 range.
