We Americans have the ability to turn absolutely anything into political or religious drama. Sometimes both. Healthcare. Human rights. Education. Technology. Everything but sewing, really.

Home Economics (is that still taught in high school?) is a class all the girls had to take in jr and sr year to learn how to be good little housewives and learn to cook, keep house, and sew clothes. I failed miserably at learning to sew. The teacher gave me a passing grade on my project out of pity probably because I forgot to wash the blood off of the inside of the dress from when the sewing machine needle went through the nail of my middle right hand finger (never let your attention drift around heavy machinery). Apt that is was the middle finger

I'm too old to drive a spots car. My wife had been threatening me for the past 10 yrs about buying herself a two door RED sports car. I said yeah...I can imagine you a 60 yrs old granny driving a red sports car.... rotflmao2.gif

Watch out, DF.
Some young men can't resist a cougar in a red sports car. :Up_to_something::Up_to_something::Up_to_something:

@Matata omg i thought i was the only one who had the sewing machine needle go thru my nail & finger!
The school gave me a wet paper towel to put on it & sent me back to class

We are in an elitist club for sure.

You and I probably just jinxed sewing.

I always find this hilarious
State and religion are bad bedfellows here

Just do it DF. My dad (older than your wife) is driving a 2 door silver coupe convertible the past few years. Life is too short to not do what you like, screw the opinion of others since it harms no one else.

It wasn't taught in my HS when I was back in high school. Maybe that's a Brooklyn thing? I was in HS in 1978.
We had to take typing and I almost failed that class. But no sewing/cooking etc. Explains a lot haha about my lack of domestic skills.

Just asked Greg and he said his HS had Home Ec for girls and listen to this- Bachelor foods for the boys. Greg loved that class. He was in HS from 1972-1976 in New Jersey. Wow that was progressive for the 70s!

I am thankful to his mom and his HS for honing his cooking/baking and sewing skills.

Haha I remember home ec class. We worked in pairs and my partner and I were the only two openly queer kids in school at the time and it was a conservative area. We pretended to be a 1950s couple but gender reversed and we got him a pink frilly apron to wear. My teacher was pretty homophobic and uncomfortable with the two of us but couldn’t find fault with his cooking or my sewing skills so we did fine, haha.

MTG, that's great!

In middle school we had Home Ec class, also in pairs, and the class was for both boys and girls. We did some very simple cooking, and basic hygiene, but that's all I remember. I don't think we did sewing or anything.

Both boys and girls had Home EC when I was in high school. 1979-82.

We could choose woodshop, cooking and sewing classes.
In woodshop, we girls made a jewelry box!!
Sewing class was fun. I made a shirt that I used to wear to school.

In cooking class, we learned basic techniques and I remember making cookies and cakes.
But I mostly learned to cook from Mom and Grandma.

Wow, I graduated in 1996 and we didn't have anything like that in northern Germany.

We did woodworking and some crocheting , knitting and sewing for the whole class in elementary school. It was more for the fun of it and to see if we'd like it as a hobby...

That reminds me - we also did woodworking. But I don't remember actually making anything. I have some vague memories of sanding something down. Making a jewelry box - how cool! I'd have loved that.

We didn't do any knitting or sewing, which is a pity because they could have been nice as hobbies. One of my grandmothers taught me to knit, but I've long since forgotten how.

Annette, I apologize because I obviously didn’t understand what you meant when you posted.

I had discovered that my angst about the topic only existed if I went on twitter or visited news sites. If I stayed off of them, the world was still turning and the angst was gone.

Today is a great day. Hopefully it will all be over soon and we won’t have to deal with it anymore.

I don't get angsty about anything in the news. I figure that my own life has contained/will contain enough angst without looking for more. And yes, it definitely helps not to look at it.

I wish my high-school offered Home Ec. I learned cooking and sewing on my own. Cooking for my family - for my husband, Mom and Dad, when they were alive, was a joy for me. I have a strong drive to nest, to make a home for myself and loved ones that brings joy and comfort.

I learned how to cook and sew from my parents.

In high school in the early 70s I took both Home Ec, and Typing.
I was the only boy in the classes, and loved both at the time.
Half a century later I really appreciate having learned these very useful skills.

I am happily putting an order in with Precision Gem while watching this s-show unfold.

I took home Ec class in Jr high and typing in HS. I wasn't the only boy in these classes.

I wished that I had home ec, or wood shop, or metal shop in HS.

So when I went to art school to get my BFA, I took all that I could for electives in the wood shop & metal shop...forging, carving, mold-making, welding, and worked in their foundry with a bunch of bad*** chicks where we did lost wax & sand casting for aluminum, bronze and iron sculptures.

We built our own massive 10ft+ furnace outside in the countryside that took approx 8 of us to keep going, scrapped and cracked our own iron from old bathtubs & radiators, mixed chemicals for our own patinas, poured hundreds of pounds of molten metal...ugh it was HEAVEN.

I never felt cooler than I did wearing leather from head to toe, pouring molten iron with a 2500° furnace blasting in my face!!! Screw home ec!

Done all that stuff in JR high and HS. This was back in the 70's.

That ain't gonna happen. My wife is a tight wad! . She spends less than $100 per yr on herself.

I hope everyone in DC is safe ATM.

Making major headlines in Europe atm

Oh my god. Oh my god.
