Does anyone else think that Diana's jewelry was tacky?

What did you wear DS???? :wavey::mrgreen2:

I never had the puffy hairdo, thankfully! All I remember were Laura Ashley dresses being popular, and I had a few with matching dresses for my little girl in the late 80's!

I had the lot, big hair, big heels, perfume, shoulders, long jacket and short skirt, the Full Monty!

There's nothing new under the sun, for instance, this so called contouring. We used to do that with blusher and white eyeshadow, the blusher in a stripe down the cheekbone and the white or pale eyeshadow on top of the cheekbone and along the jawline, the sunken in look was popular.

Come on ~ I wore electric blue mascaras, pale pearl lipsticks, permed hair stiffed up as high as I could spraying multiple times a day (hated humid air near beach), and I know I rocked the look with pastel colored and whopping gold dangle earrings.

We shouldn't be looking back now and say someone had a bad taste a long ago (ahhh the good old days, and I LOVE the 80s music till this day). Tastes and trends evolve, and god knows what we'd think of our current straight hair styles a few decades from now. I sure thought 70s flat hair was pretty terrible during the 80s, AT THE TIME!

This thread is hysterical - it's bringing up all kinds of long-forgotten memories! I had a Laura Ashley blouse that I adored. Cream floral with a nipped-in waist and then a flared frill all around the hips (I was very slim back then!) and a round collar, and elbow-length mutton-style sleeves with ties. I was young and I thought it was a masterpiece. To me, it's still the most special blouse I've ever owned. And the electric-blue mascara - omg, how did I ever forget about that!! And I remember the contouring, too! A white stripe down the center of your nose! Hahahaa!

Perhaps today's trends will look dated in 20 years. I've noticed a trend toward very high stilettos with a thin heel and extremely heavy eye-makeup in recent years - think Melania and the Duchess of Cambridge. Now, it seems that almost every woman on TV wears a lot of eyeliner and dark eyeshadow. Perhaps the next trend will be barely-there eye make-up!

My guess for Meghan's tiara is the Strathmore Rose.

Fantastic, photo, Blue! Yes, that tiara. For some reason, I imagine it to be lying flat across her drawn-back hair like a headband with her hair in a low bun, in a traditionally Spanish style. Maybe because the Queen Mother wore this tiara across her forehand, and I think the diamonds would stand out so well pressed against Meghan's dark hair. But it looks good in the photo!

Yeah, today's heavy make-up! What is up with that? The trend is towards smoky eyes for everyday wear. So what do they do for special occasions? I also feel old for tutting about too much make-up, like a grandma, but seriously, I've never seen such heavy eye makeup as I have in recent years. It's getting to the stage where it's being normalized by women who are constantly in the public eye, and I just want to say, "Nooo! Women don't look like that! It's just layers and layers of make-up!"

It's not that the women below don't look good - they do - but man, that is some heavy eye make-up. I included Joanna Gaines because I like her show, Fixer Upper, but she is never filmed without full eye make-up and to me, it looks normal now. The other blonde is Holly Willoughby, a friend of the Duchess of Cambridge. I read that she's a TV presenter.

I realized that seeing women with fully-rimmed eyes and black eyeshadow is now normal to me, and I've been stopping myself from taking up the trend by doing very basic eye make-up, just some ivory eyeshadow and a lick of mascara. But I want to get the eyeliner and black eyeshadow out! When so many women in the public eye are so very ultra-glam every time they are photographed, I think it puts pressure on ordinary women when sky-high stilettos and panda eye make-up are the norm in just about every media image.

I guess the women rimmed their eyes as such in ancient Egypt! There is nothing new.

Out of interest, here are the same women with much lighter or no make-up. Would never have recognized Melania! I think they all look so much younger and fresher without the really heavy makeup.Holly.jpg Melania 5.jpg Melania 6.jpg KateM.jpg

I haven't seen pics of cousin Diana in so long!! (Yes she was my cousin, as was Winston Churchill...)

My wife adores her sapphire ring so much that I had to get her an Opal ring made that was very much inspired by Diana's ring.

LOL, I can't stand today's trendy makeup - most girls look waaaay too made up look terrible IRL and they'd all look ton better with more natural makeup - now I sound like my mother back in 80s.

You mean like this?

I agree, a lot of the makeup looks caked on, stripes of bronzer, highlighter, fake lashes, tons of eyeliner, drawn on brows and huge lips, I too sound like my Mother lol! But I'm not seeing the natural beauty and although I love makeup, I always think a lighter hand is preferable. They seem to lay it on so thick at times now but I suppose we've all said that since ' time immoral'!

Those injected lips have to go... gosh they're mostly so awful, and only a few are tastefully enhanced until they also inevitably get bigger like trout. I've seen so many dainty pretty lips ruined these days. People will certainly talk about this many years from now on.

I know, what will happen in years to come once those lips are out of fashion and they've been distorted with the fillers....Will the lip tissue go back to normal or not....You can do miracles with lip liner if you aren't heavy handed, I just don't see the need for it.
