I really want to use my moms wedding veil but it is white and my dress is ivory.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can dye the veil myself or know of anyone who does this type of work?

Thanks!

Does it matter if the veil is white? I think most are? I never thought it looked weird with an ivory colored dress.

Have you tried on the veil with the dress? It might look ok.

If it doesn''t look ok, I''ve heard of people dipping their veils in a very weak tea to darken them a little. Personally, I find that to be too risky.

Honestly, I don''t think anyone would notice if your dress was ivory and your veil white, especially if the veil is very sheer. The other day though, I did see a bride having her bridal portraits made in the park, and her big poofy veil was way whiter than her dress, and it made the dress look dingy, so I understand why you''re concerned.

I also found this link, which may be helpful:

Good luck!

You could use tea. It should subtly dye it without ruining it or making it too dark. Although if it''s a meaningful heirloom I might be afraid of ruining it... Is the color difference between your dress and the veil terribly noticeable?

I''ve done the tea thing to turn white shoes into ivory ones but they were just throw-away polyester satin shoes, I don''t know if I''d be that brave with a family heirloom...FWIW, they came out great. I blotted tea evenly all over the shoe with cotton balls.

Is there a dress preservation company or a tailor you could call and ask? Maybe the salon where you bought your gown.

Unfortunately i tried the veil with my dress last night and it was WAY too white - it almost made my dress look dirty. Mostly it was due to the hand stitching on it...

I think I might have to give the tea dye option a whirl - my mom assures me that she doesn''t care if i ruin it in the process.

Fingers Crossed!

A lot will depend on what the veil is made of.

Silk or cotton will dye very easily as will polyester - nylon will not take a colour at all.

Weak tea is good and would be my first choice.

My degree is in textile design and tea/coffee etc was a popular choice at college for getting certain effects. Sometimes you will get a better effect and colour if you make the tea with milk. Do wash it well afterwards to make sure that your veil doesn''t smell of tea anymore.

Otherwise, Dylon machine dye is great - just put a small amount in at a time though - say 1 tablespoon - rather than the whole packet. You can build a colour up, but not down. Fabric also looks darker wet than it will when it''s dry.

The tea idea seems like it would work. Best of luck! That''s great that your mom isn''t concerned.

I have to tell you, after reading that post recently about dying crinoline bright pink, I thought when I first read the title of your post that you might be doing something similar with a veil!

I couldn''t decide if that was too much or way cool

Looks like you''re choosing a far tamer option.

Haha, just wanted to share.

That''s exactly what I thought!
