Egg and other shortages?

Happened upon a bunch of eggs marked down because they expire 2/10. $9.29 originally!

Oyster shells are in short supply. I thought it might just be me not knowing where people usually get, but someone else just posted. These are used as the usual source of calcium for egg laying chickens and ducks. It is often included in layer feed and always offered to the side also. Without enough calcium, the shells don't form properly.

That's interesting. Any idea why there is a shortage? Is there some kind of oyster problem like Red Tide?

No clue! That would make sense because I think that is what I read about the seafood shortage some areas are having.

Interesting. I just bought last weekend a huge bag of oyster shells so I am set for a while. For calcium, you can also feed your hens their own egg shells, and/or toast other people's egg shells to sterilize them.

Good reminder! I might start saving their shells. I have a big bag in reserve then have been able to get 5 pounds at a time through Amazon so haven't had an issue yet, thankfully.

Living in coastal NC, oysters are a big thing here, not seeing any shortages, yet.

HI:

Well, "large" eggs are nothing like (days of yore) large eggs. I think I have (gorgeous) Greek olives that are along the same size lines. My 2 egg omlette today, was like film.

cheers--Sharon

Nice!

They make it hard for backyard flocks to contribute. Someone asked a question in a poultry group and it looks like some areas require a business license to sell them. Others only require if you make $25,000 or more per year. It may mean your homeowners insurance won't cover certain things, especially if there is anyone makes a claim about your eggs being a problem. Possibly have to convert home insurance to farm insurance. Not having all the right stuff in place can open you up to fines or even $$$$ lawsuits with no protection for any assets. At this point, DH is even uncomfortable with me giving extras away. I need to talk with a friend and see what licenses and things she got to see if it makes sense. We really don't want to open ourselves up to losing our home and everything!

One week of eggs. This is with all of the ducks laying and less than half of the chickens....

oh that's sad he doesnt even want you to give them away, the culture of sueing everybody in the States really makes us scratch our heads down here
ive never heard of anyone here getting sick from eggs
and we grew up eatting free range eggs made into raw eggs flips for lunch (like a vinilla milkshake with a raw egg

our store manager at work has backyard hens and she regulary gives them to her staff
i mean her husband gave us all covid - how worse can it get ? :lol-2:

Yes, very sad it is this way. I mean, it is not super frequent. Many people around here sell their extra eggs without any sort of paperwork or anything and have no problems. It is just that rare instance that goes very wrong. Unfortunately, if you are that one instance, you could lose everything.

Until I can learn more about what the risks are and how to protect ourselves, we are eating more egg meals. I'm actually about to box up a few dozen and drop off at a friend's door. I figure that is low risk and I hate for them to go to waste!

got a note from the supermarket with our grocery delivery yesterday apologizing for no bread or fresh produce (we still got tomatoes) as a truck somewhere had broken down .....
perhaps they need to go back to buying local and not getting everything via their distrubution centre that is not even in this city !

i have noticed at work we are selling more bread
we dont make or sell much, its like its the owner's hobby, sandwhich bread for the 3 shops sandwhich making and a handful of different loaves, but often that has been selling out of late
the closest commercial bread bakery was hit by the cyclone so our suppermarket has been restricting bread to two of each kind per customer

just on the bread note
i had an older gentleman the other week who loves our bread from work because reguaalr store brought bread causes him upset
now apart from cheese and bacon and some pesto or galric etc the bread we make at work is just plain old eveil white bread
but it probably has no additives or what ever they put in bread these days

we seem to regulary run out of bananas when the one banana boat from the islands breaks down
yet when i was a kid my mother always had bananas in the fruit bowl

The frozen petite peas my ducks love have gone from $5.49/bag up to $8.99/bag . I mean, better than the no peas available I saw many struggling with on the duck groups a few months ago, but... Ouch.

Eggs were down to $6.24 a doz today.

I finally paid 2.59 for a dozen eggs at Target today.
