Thanks for the input! I think you''re right about the ring with the oval stone . . . I''m about 99.9% sure that one is costume jewelry. However, I''m still not too sure about the emerald cut stone. I think there''s a possibility that the stone in that ring is a real emerald. The jeweler I took it to on Friday didn''t seem to be able to give me many answers, so maybe I''ll see if I can find a gemologist just to be sure.

My feeling on the EC cut one is that the colour isn''t good enough to be a synthetic if that doesn''t sound like an oxymoron.

Get thee to a gemologist post-haste my girl!

Thanks, Pandora! And it doesn't sound like an oxymoron . . . I know exactly what you mean! I'll definitely work on finding a local gemologist, and I'll let you all know when I have more to report!

ETA: I spoke to my Mom, and she said my great-aunt had the EC ring for as long as she can remember. (She'd kill me for telling you all this, but she was born in 1954.) My Mom is almost certain that the emerald is real, so there IS hope! LOL!

OK, I was unable to find a gemologist locally. So, I took the EC stone to another local jeweler and was told that it is a synthetic. Oh, well . . .

Awwwww what a shame. I hope you can still love it though? It sounds like it''s been in your family for quite some time so it''s worth much more in just sentimentality.

That''s exactly how I feel. I decided a long time ago that I would still love both rings, no matter what. I really wanted to find out if they were genuine or not, mainly just so I would know what I had and maybe be able to get them insured if necessary. I wasn''t too disappointed to find out that they''re synthetic . . . I had been prepared for that possibility all along. Oh well . . . at least this has given me an interest in colored stones! Now, I''m off to start a new thread about a possible citrine ring project!
