HI:

Any chance--given it was purchased at an "antique store"--that it is a rose cut diamond? They are genuine, but not cut in the fashion most are accustomed to recognizing.

cheers--Sharon

Here''s an example of a really ugly rose cut stone:

Which stone in that pendant are you saying looks like her ring? the brownish speckled one in the center? It looks like a mineral of some sort to me, and I cannot imagine that she has not ever seen even a couple diamonds to be able to know THIS is not right.

Couple ways to deal. She may know and not care, or may not know and would care if she did. he either knows and is hoping she won''t or he is pretty dim for any price to have bought that thinking it was a quality stone.

I like the insurance idea...takes you out of direct conflct but clues her in to the deal. how she reacts would be a clue. if she walks in and asks for her diamond to be appraised and they tell her it is not, you will know the truth. Not that you care if she wants to wear who knows what, but then maybe she will not be able to be so glib about it.

I think that suggesting an appraisal is a good way to go. Have you asked her what the specs of the ring are, other than carat size? Did the store provide any specific info. on the ring?
I think it would be hard for me not to say anything either, especially if this is a good friend. Hopefully you can bring it up in a way that is not obvious to her.
Good luck!

Well a twist on the appraisal idea might be if you get your rings appraised together uless you already have? For insurance purposes of course. My other thought, if feasible, was to go shopping for her wedding jewelry together. Go in and look at stuff to match her ring/dress etc and someone at the jewelry store might point it out or she may see the obvious differences between her stone and actual diamonds. Good luck this seems like an impossible situation where there just is no right answer. Good luck!
