Well, I have been wrestling with this upgrade decision for what seems like forever. Found a setting that knocked my socks off like none other (may lightning strike me- but maybe even more than the Leon setting I love). Maybe. This is why I am afraid of making a decision.

Anyway- thought I finally had an answer. Untill I recieved the quote. Naievly thought that since it contained only a few diamonds and relatively simple it would be alot less than the Leon. No no no my friends, it was alot MORE. Significantly more. Turns out the beautiful simplicity is a result of handmade perfectionism, and that is very expensive. It is worth every penny, but more pennies than I am likely to have anytime soon.

Oh it is painful. I think I want it more now that I know I can most likely never have it. :nono: I thought maybe if I forgo any kind of gift for the next 5 or 10 years or so, I could make it happen. But it is so beyond the budget I don't even want to mention it to my husband.

Anyone feel my pain? Have you ever fallen hard for the unavailable stone, setting? I need a pint of Haagen Daz and some tissues.

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

Oh yes I know that feeling well. It's very very hard.

I have 2 rings that I desperately want, and maybe if I save all my bonuses for the next 20 years I might be able to get one of them. Other than that I need a lotto win.

Are you able to post pictures of the settings so we can commiserate with you?

But I think it might be worth mentioning your dilemma to hubby. You just never know what the future could hold and if he doesnt know how you feel he cant do anything to help make your dream real.

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

petrock, I'm sorry to hear of your disappointment. Do you mind to post a photo or at least a more detailed description? From what you've mentioned of it, I cant imagine why it should be so exceedingly expensive-would you consider having another custom jeweller of high standards produce something similar for you? (or is it highly expensive because its a 'name'?)
I can certainly relate to desiring gems or diamonds that are simply out of budget, but as far as settings I tend to know/keep in mind my limitations, so I havent experienced this exact thing-yet! ;))

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

I feel your pain. Not over a setting, but over an eternity band (or two!). Is there any chance that you could have someone make something similar for you?

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

can you maybe post the setting? I'm curious to see what it looks like...and maybe someone else can make one for you?

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

never say never. some of us are ingenious. Leon does amazing work but he is not the only cook in the kitchen and his prices have become ludicrous. I personally have worked with a few jewelers that do equivalent work--much cheaper. and I am PICKY. please post pictures and we will help if we can.

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

Yes you have no idea how I feel your pain....I want to get a new diamond so bad it hurts.....I cant afford a new diamond...so I thought about a new setting, I can afford to do what I want with a new setting, but I cant justify the cost, too many other things need to be replaced or bought, my reset will just have to go on the back burner for a long time. :errrr:

WOW.......gorgeous setting it will work well for a lower color stone i had in mind for next project...AVC for sure...lol. what is the price of it and the maker if i may ask please?

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

This would be if I upgrade my stone to a 2.5- 3. ct light yellow radiant. I was thinking the full gold basket would really help the color.

Here are some faux handshots I made before I found out the price

(I have a little too much time on my hands right now)

Thanks Arjunajane, I don't know if it is their name, or the fact that it is all handmade. He said it takes 8-10 weeks to make. Their workmanship is exquisite.

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

Well, if would not be hand made or the name brand, but I think you could easily have a similar design made by any number of vendors.

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

That is very inline with what am thinking for an Q/R AVC, tall crown will get still the light and the stunning yellow gold crown that will blend with a low color ..wow! you have a great expensive taste.
I know mark does not like to copy other vendors work and he stated that clearly on his website, but an idea similar to that you may have a more stunning design by MM.
I will keep that theme in mind for the next project but i feel for you.

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

Oh, I love this thread! I was about to say that I love a setting by Van Craeynest that is in the $4000+ range and how hard it is to justify that kind of expense for something so tiny and with a tiny diamond content! But now, that seems like a downright bargain compared to that setting!

I think your dream setting is very beautiful, but I think if Leon made it, you'd be looking at MUCH less. I actually think his prices are reasonable for the level of work he does. And no jeweler can help the fact that metals prices are through the roof! If I were you, I'd contact Maytal Hannah because she can do work of that quality. You'd just have to make the design slightly different.

Leon seemed expensive but I really went into this not knowing how much settings were. I chose my current setting because it was very cheap and I knew I would be most likely changing it at some point. But it is not very well made. You do get what you pay for!

The more I look around, he is very reasonable. This is the setting I am considering from him, if I keep my current stone and just go all out on pave. Even with all those diamonds, it is alot less!! The whole idea of going with the yellow stone was to do a simple inexpensive setting, putting the money into the stone. Whoops!

Do you have a pic of the Van Craeynest, I love their work too.

Oh yeah, those can really get up there. You don't expect it, because there is no big center stone.

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

Well, that setting by Leon is gorgeous and timeless. I personally think it would be better for an e-ring whereas the other might be a better RHR. Oh to have both!!!

I'll post the VC..let me find a picture!

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

Diamondseeker, Van Craeynest is the designer that I'll never afford too, and covet anyway. I would adore having a setting from them, but the ones I love would be, like, ridiculously close to the price my entire 3 1/2ct OEC cost. So that's really not on. Sigh. They sure do lovely work though.

I feel your pain! (I'm going to have to go to my other computer to find the pictures because I can't access them on the forum)

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

Well, I couldn't find any great pictures of my Van Craeynest dream setting, but here are a couple! The first picture is an e-ring posted here on PS and the second is the setting with a round stone just sitting in the prongs.

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

oooh, that is soo beautiful! petrock. is there a way that you could I know this might be a stretch to say... but sell whatever you can in terms of jewelry or even your ring... and wear a plain band or so for a few years then, you cand get the diamond, then save a little bit more for the setting? later? But I feel your pain, I want two other diamond shape, and I'm desperately trying to figure out how to adjust my budget :Up_to_something: . However, I do have a few other dream diamond rings, but can't justify the cost to buy it even if i won the lottery

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

that setting is GOR-ju-e-ous! Yummy yummy!

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

ok, looking back at your setting, I can totally see Sally of Hearts of Water Jeweler Make this ring. I feel her quality is on par with some of the PS vendors here even though she is found through Etsy. Maybe you could get a replica made by her with tha different stone and wear it for a bit to see how you feel about it,

Re: Falling in Love With a Ring Beyond Your Means- Support G

What about this setting by Jewels By Erica Grace? I dunno, but I doubt it's anywhere near $8500.
*hugs*
