Last one! Now this is interesting. It is certified as a Ruby BUT where is the line between a pink sapphire and a Ruby? To my mind, this is more pink sapphire. Having said that, in real life it''s less pink and slightly more red but I''m not convinced!!! Again though, I bought this for the cut.

Actually LD, I'd agree with the cert... pinkish, but a ruby. Great cut! And that marquise...

Pandora - nice stone, beautiful ring! (Who is Timmy???)

These aren't large, but they are nice colour (less pink, more red IRL) and invisibly set (except for the fingerprints...)

Gorgeous aren''t they!

Timmy was a poster here a few years back. IIRC, his girlfriend''s grandfather had proposed to her grandmother with a ruby e-ring (turned out to be synthetic in the course of the ruby search saga) and he wanted to recreate the idea. It was quite a search and then there was a nightmare situation with appraising the stone afterwards. Not sure we ever heard the final outcome.

Anyway, it''s one of THE most beautiful stones I have ever seen on PS and I love the setting he chose.

In the meantime, you can always post old pics of the ruby

Although I''d prefer to wait until I can post new pics of the reset taken in incandescent or day light (when rubies look best), here is one old pic for now (the old pics were taken in the evening when the star ruby looks a little dull IMO):

rubycharm!! i LOVE your ring! am i reading it right that you''re getting this reset?? but..but..i love it!

The ring was custom made by Van Craeynest (we purchased the stone from Palagems via the NSC), and we got it a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I had envisioned and requested a thinner and more delicate halo that wouldn''t overwhelm the center stone. So, when I finally received the ring, I wasn''t very thrilled

with the size of the melee and the width of the halo (although the workmanship was flawless). Anyway, I was very fortunate that VC offered to remake it at no charge (talk about excellent customer service!!!), and now I''m anxiously waiting to get my new ring

Timmy''s ruby is TFD. It''s what all rubies aspire to look like; a rich true red.

Some really beautiful stones in this thread, but I have to say that LD''s setting choice for that hexagon is really something. Sure, two points are still exposed, but you can''t really have it all with these cuts I guess. Baguettes really flatter the stone and give the ring a nice flow, and a real sense of balance.

Thank you, whitby. I was planning on adding some handengraving, but I liked this setting the way it was, so I left it alone.

Thank you mr ma re for the compliment x

OMC - I''m interested in your comment - what, for you, separates a Ruby from a Sapphire? For me it''s definitely colour and if I see pink (rightly or wrongly) it''s a sapphire!!! I appreciate that''s being incredibly hard on my gems but it''s the only way I can separate them safely in my mind!

Absolutely colour - but I'd say that:

1. If red and purple dominate, then i'd call it a ruby. In your photo, on my monitor that seems to be the case; it may be different in reality
2. "Pigeon blood" has a touch of pink (or perhaps the purple in it makes it seem so?)
3. Historically... I'm sure you know that until some original thinker decided that there was such a thing as a pink sapphire, they were all rubies
4. Pink and red are two tones of the same hue, so it's quite arbitrary to decide where one ends and the other begins, anyway

This one I'd call a pink (with a brown tinge - but it's unheated) - sorry for the not so good photo.

Thank you for that OMC.

I see what you mean about the purple and hadn''t thought of it along those lines before. I guess that I''m super sensitive to pink so prefer not to see any!

I can definitely see the difference in the ring you posted - as you say pink with brown undertones.

Here is a picture of my daughter''s ruby pendant.

That is a little ember! Do you have the stats?

Thanks Lady Disdain, it''s a .61 ct princess cut, Burmese.

I''m loving all the lovely rubies!

LD-this has to be one of my favs though!!!

Here''s a band I posted in another thread. I had it for only one day - bought it at a gem show, one of the rubies fell out that night, returned it the next day. I now regret doing that and wish I had just gotten it fixed.
