(Future) Whitby Jet protects (x2)

off on a tangent @Autumn in New England i have a quick question please
i got some rose gold round flat spacers (that look like washers) to go with the rest of my rose quartz beads , OMG they look really good, are these kind of spacers ment to have knotts between them and the round gemstone bead ?

I feel like I have something similar to this and will have to look! I tend to only knot pearls (because they're so delicate). So since you have spacer beads and the others are hearty quartz, I would say no to the knotting!

Congrats on your new jet and malachite necklace!! I can't wait to see it. :appl:

I was wrong about the beads being quartz - they're morganite. But the spacers are rose gold. I know yours are washers (which I actually prefer). I always put the best beads towards the front. lol

oh what a lovely colour (and im not a pink kind of girl)
my rose quartz is a pale pink, 3 different sizes but i can only find the spacers in 6mm and 8mm
i have a lot of spacers, if i was going to use the leftovers on pearls would i knot that ?
i had trouble finding disk spacers, they are only gold plated not gold filled and i dont think they are stirling silver which i prefer, they might be brass or some other cheap base metal
also im going to use some of the spacers on my Navajo Jet rope, i was going to use yellow gold every 6 or 7 beads but i might see what these rose ones look like, my jet rope will be knotted - mind you i have to work out how to finish a claspless rope with the two strand method -as it would cost a fortune to get it proffesionally knotted

Sure... you can knot with any beads (not just pearls). I think it's just personal preference. Here's a really good video showing the traditional stringing method. :)

thank goodness for PS and this thread

i put my bead board away when the outside cat Sox came inside and decided she wanted to be an inside cat (that's the cat the SPCA would not take, ive been feeding her and looking out for her for a few years now, she is asleep in my bed right now, she is elderly, i took her breakfast in bed

anyway last night i could not sleep due to a huge electrical storm that went on for ages way into the morning, ironically ex stray cats sleep through thunder and lightening and rain thundering on the roof, Fluffy was asleep on a windowsill with the curtains not drawn and didnt care a bit

so i got my bead board out and i could not remember what went with what

So i had finally got around to buying some more pearl silk and am working on getting everything strung up and off to the jeweller -its a long drawn out process

so now its back to the antique Whitby jet ..............................

unless by some miricle i get my phone sorted i hope this is the last post for the origional fascated whitby jet beads
im kinda so over it
i have them threaded up with these as the lozenge carnelian was too big and out of proportion
1725147118226.png

these are slightly too small but the ss disco spacer beads help a lot
oh but oh my the hole is so tiny on the carnelian beads and the hole in the jet is huge -like i could get 4 ply knitting wool through the drill hole

quite frankly this jet is just lucky to be still around and if it wasnt for its antiquity (i live in a young country where the early settlers were Victorians) i think i would have given up by now
i have no idea how its going to knot, maybe i dont even care if the jet is knotted but it would hang better if it were
can one use bigger silk on one half of a necklace ?
1725147615442.png
the carelian flower is going to go in the middle, between the orange and the black - maybe it would be somehow possible ? but wheather my stringer lady can work that out ???

Isn't jet too soft to even wear? As coal, it's ridiculously soft, right? I don't think I would string quartz-y gems next to it.
last post part 2 ;)2
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ???

just looking at my origional objectives, i have found an obaque stone, i have made it not be mourning jewellery despite the late edition of ss spacers , i have given it life via a flower central elememnt
the jet is seperate from the quartz, being a half and half necklace
hopefully it does not look halloween although i might just wear it on hallowean (if its finished:lol-2: )
i must say its a nice length
and it looks different to the other antique jet with the rose quartz

anyway this thread, although frustrating :wall:
has provided me with hours of cheap entertainment:lol-2:

We can't wait to see what you come up with! You must get that phone fixed pronto!

oh dear
im back
now i know Jet is not expensive but i love its history and how it was once organic and living
im unsatisfied with the latest configeration, it looks costume - as in kids costume !
i have ordered some wen pearls :lol-2:

so thanks to @Matata 's new jet thread ive been thinking about my fascated chunky jet beads
sigh
im now thinking they are antique maybe just embrace its history rather than trying to change the narrative

one piece of advice i would give anyone buying an antique Jet necklace is make sure its long enough becuase with out using an extender its not that easy to lengthen,

and maybe some of these neckalces started out as collars or chockers but im sure mine were longer ones that have been reworked/ split into two as fashions changed
sigh

anyway i have some FW Wen pearls on the way from China ....
but i dont want all my creations to be alternation pearls with the coloured gemstones
so maybe more pearls between the jet
maybe i can make a longer necklace ?
...sigh

Here's a little something I'm sure you could use :mrgreen2:

you know those threads we get where a newbie posts a big shinny piece of slag glass and thinks they have found a huge diamond ...
i feel like this thread is heading in that direction :lol-2:

it is late but i had a big nana nap this afternoon and tomorrow is my half day ....

i have to keep reminding myself what drew me to jet in the first place
that it was a living tree back in the Jurassic age and millions of years latter it becomes shinny bling

first used as jewellery 5000 years ago

i need to restore my beads and make them wearable in honor of our Victorian forbearers

im restringing up the whitby jet with some inexpensive Wen button pearls
the light in this house is terrible i might just add

that is so beautiful , thank you
i really needed to see that right at this moment :appl:

nope, i think i need either bigger pearls closer to the size of the jet or smaller pearls and the (1 being the jet) 1-3-1-2-1-3-1-2 -1 spacing isnt quite right either
i think this version will end up being long

oh dear God its me and my Jet again :wall:
i was sitting on my bed thinking about putting my socks on and i saw my green larima necklace sitting there and i thought oh well why not .... ?
im not happy with the pearls, i think i still want colour
i am determined to get this finished this year

Daisy, I think that first group of Sleeping Beauty beads are undrilled. So no good for stringing!

But the strands you showed are really pretty. I like the faceting! Probably Chinese turquoise.

thank you, thats why i needed a 2nd pair of eyes ((and in your case, much better eyes than mine )
