Hi guys!
Wanted to share my new OEC & set. As some of you know, I'm on a mission to find the ultimate old cut on a budget. I've already transitioned through a couple old cuts when this wedding set came across my path. I'm usually not too sentimental about vintage settings, but I fell in love with this one. According to the seller, it belonged to his aunt, who had a long and happy marriage. Both the engagement ring and the wedding band are engraved with the initials of their original owners, and the wedding band also has the wedding date -- 11.25.1937. I love that these two pieces are still together.
Still, me being me, I had to take the diamond out to get the chips & abrasions cleaned up. That went off without a hitch, the weight changed from 1.58 to 1.54ct. Then I sent it to GIA, it came back as a K Si2 (both grades expected and I'm happy with them). The next step was to put the diamond back into the old setting. That's where the big problem happened
I knew that the old fishtail prongs were pretty worn away, and was kind of worried about putting the stone into the same setting without some repair. I thought maybe new beads could be added to the fishtails... it might look messy, but what can you do.
Anyway, to make this long story a little shorter I'll just say that the jeweler took some liberty with the ring and instead of building up the old prongs, he shaved them down to the point that the turned into regular prongs, and set the stone that way (without checking with me). When I saw a pic of it, I was heartbroken (read: I cried). However, I realized that it would be a big project to rebuild the corners, and I certainly didn't trust this guy to do it. So I decided to accept the modified ring and wear it until I have the budget and the knowledge (i.e. trusted jeweler) to rebuild the old head.
Today I received the ring in the mail. Even with the changes, I still adore it
I actually kind of like the new look! It opens up the leaf details on the sides. I will probably just leave it like this, at least for a good long while.
Most likely this will not be my "forever" stone, it's not the ultimate upgrade I initially wanted. But I really like this imperfect but very cute stone, and I love the whole set. I twinkles at me so joyfully
[I'm big into diamond "personality," and this guy is very happy and smiley
].
The pics aren't the best, I may add better ones once I get them. But I'm impatient to share, so these will have to do for now
First two pics are what the setting used to look like...
the rest are from today
