Yeah, I always say, unless one has an unlimited gem budget, there's always a compromise (especially with ruby). I wish you hadn't experienced any bumps along the way with this vendor, but I'm glad you're ultimately pleased. I think you did well.

My ruby compromise is to not have one. I decided to stick with spinel but I do eye the rubies and wonder if I should attempt to find an affordable option.

I don't think anyone on this form is going to argue with that! Spinel is many collectors favorite gem for a reason.

This is a magnificent spinel. I'm starting to look for a ruby (I love red gems) and the prices are absolutely devastating. I'm so glad @Avondale found something beautiful!

I had a ruby dream, but no satisfaction. I found one on Etsy, but the seller cancelled. Whatever. That was weird. I‘ve been looking, but can’t find it,and the prices have gone up and up and up.

On a road trip, today I was in Carmel, CA,not a bargain shopping Mecca. I went into an antique shop, looking for a souvenir for my daughter. I found treasure. Nothing for her, though.

The small ruby was marked on the appraisal as approximately 1 ct Burma purplish red heated. I looked at the report. From GIA: Burma, .97ct no heat. @Autumn in New England is right; appraisers are no good! The GIA cert was from 2015 and the appraisal from 2018. The price was from 2018 too.

And I found a lovely clean emerald that I took a chance on.

I’m afraid so. I love the setting—a lot of finger coverage. Not a top color, but clear, Burmese no heat and a deal made it impossible for me to pass up.
