Gene's newest stones (precision gem)

Look at all that love for the tanzanite. I love it’s concave cutting. It looks like it’d be so gorgeous in person.

I can’t believe you chipped a spinel ring @Burmesedaze. I’m betting the cuss words flew, once you realized what happened. :-o How did that happen btw?

@voce that’s a bummer. I always end up these with residual microscopic glass shards that evade my vacuum but then find a way to bite me when it’s least expected. Hopefully, those sadistic bastards don’t do the same to you.

Do you like it? At 3 carats it's the biggest stone I've got! My husband says it is not too big, lol. It is pretty much exactly the color of my lotus blossom, straight up pink. It is most gorgeous in the bright sunlight where it just glows. Definitely has some color moods in various light that add to its personality. Plopped it into an open setting for the hand shot. I'm thinking about maybe three little diamonds in a triangle configuration on each side, with rose gold. Doing my happy dance!

I love it. :)

Honestly don't know? Didn't even realize it until I gave my rings a wash. But I do recall wearing the peach spinel ring out on a few occasions when out ahem social drinking. It has a flat profile and goes with everything I wear! Might have occurred during one of these evenings.

Thank you, @LisaRN! I’m delighted! I was hoping I could find another spinel I liked, but didn’t expect to be taken by that vivid pink. It’s very red under fluorescent light like my Mahenge spinel.

His new tanzanite is so pretty with the modern concave cut. I think tanzanite remains an undervalued gem for its beauty.

Wow they went fast. Anyone got anything?

I was able to snag the ruby, because at that price point...how could I not?

I tried for something too but based on what I’ve read you have to wait a few hours to see if there is a refund? I wrote in to ask and no response so I’m going to bed now and hope no refund email back... fingers crossed.

@icy_jade good night, hope we get what we want without a refund email.

Yes hope you got the ruby. Interested to know how you plan to set it. Bezel perhaps?
Yes, probably bezel. If I get the ruby, I would want to set it in Yvonne Raley's 3-stone octagon setting with contrasting color 4mm stones beside the ruby. But that project would have to go on the back burner, since I'm going to be moving within a year to get married, and I would still need to find a proper jeweler to set the stones with the setting that I would buy from Yvonne. This year, DF has hinted that he might make my birthday wishes come true with a paraiba! :mrgreen2:

I was just looking at that three-stone octagon setting earlier today! That ruby will look amazing in a ring like that. What are you going to use for sidestones? I could see it looking lovely with some blue topaz or something similar.

I missed this gem drop, which is probably a good thing! I don't think I could have resisted the Alexandrite at that price, and I really need to put my gemstone budget on a leash (I just bought a sphene even though I promised myself there would be no new stones for a while - it was a GREAT deal though!). I hope someone here got the Alex though, because I'd love to see what they do with it!

I know it’s a lab emerald but I came this close to ordering it. It looks delicious.
Only the fact that my bling fund is empty kept me from pushing the order button. :kiss2:

How much was the emerald?

Just so you know, Jeff White also had delicious lab emerald roughs recently. I may or may not have a piece of it

What are the rules for discussing synthetics in this forum? I’m asking because...

Mine!

I was also this close to ordering the alexandrite but I thought I shouldn’t be so ambitious and just start with one and see how I feel about CS...

So can I only post/discuss in the fab fashion jewelry thread or is it ok here?

@voce did you get the ruby too?

I think you'll have to go to fashion jewelry since the rules say no synthetics outside of it, so be sure to drop by and give us lots of pictures and inspiration for what you're planning to do with it!

@icy_jade Yes I did get the ruby :D Congrats on your gorgeous blue sapphire ;)2
So lucky I was on my laptop when I got the gem drop notification email!

@passions4purples Hm, I think the 4mm stones will kind of depend on what Yvonne has at the time I am ready to order it. She has some well saturated stuff, and I was thinking of going garnet, though blue zircon would be interesting, too. Without seeing the zircon, I think my preference would be spessarite garnet or purple garnet (pink/orange pink/purple over pink/blue).

Lucky girl. I'm green with envy! :mrgreen2:

We can't post them here but we should definitely start a thread over in the "Fabulous fashion jewelry" section. I need to see more of this one and @Babyblue033's new emerald from Jeff White. :D

ETA: I started a thread.

Ok! @elle_71125 kindly started a new thread so will post there but I’m still thinking how to set this stone so I may need to pop by to ask for advice heh.

Yay! I’m lucky too as I saw a flash when the email came in and decided to check.

My eye definitely sees more red than this hand shot picture. I also posted a couple different photos in the Vendor pic vs handshot thread. I'd say that Gene's photo is true to color indoors.

Outdoors in the California sun, the ruby looks like a brilliant pink sapphire, a little sleepy in the center where there are inclusions, and the teal sapphire looks remarkably crisp and like a blue tourmaline.

I love, though, that the teal sapphire (also from Precision Gem) is a sapphire, which means it can stand more of a beating than tourmaline--I'm clumsy.

Regardless of whether you would call it a ruby or pink sapphire, I think for $251 and an excellent cut 1 ct round, it's worth it to me either way. The material is untreated, so as I teach myself more about gemology and eventually looking at inclusions I can learn a lot from this ruby. It's not a perfect gem by any means, but it feels unique and lovely in its own right. Plus, it's rather likely I will move away from California at some point, and in less saturated light environments the color of the ruby will look more vivid.

I found the following ring design (Andrew Geoghegan, Clair de lune setting) and am contemplating making my own CAD model where the graduated crescent portions wrap above a portion of the bezel, just enough to cover the little sliver of blue material at the rim. Modifying the setting this way would also give the ring more of a 3D effect. I just need to find the time to teach myself to CAD rings. :read:

It’s a great idea for a design! Thank you so much for the pictures. That’s a super rare gemstone. It has a beautiful glow.

Thanks! I always enjoying seeing your gemstone picks, as well. :mrgreen2:

Congratulations on your Winza ruby, @voce! That little hint of sapphire makes it unique and interesting as it tells a story about its origins. Love the color and your setting idea! The teal sapphire is also scrumptious!

Keeping my fingers crossed that I did actually get the one I ‘bought’.
