Giving a J to a diamond noob?

Wink that was a great post earlier.

To me, one of the very best values in the market is a 2 carat J-SI1, with excellent proportions but not 'superideal', which at $5-6K/carat costs less total than a nice 1 carat D/E-VS1.

That said, I personally wouldn't buy someone J-SI1 unless they were ok with that. J-SI sounds like mall quality to the uninitiated. F-VS2 is the sweet spot until someone does the side-by-side Wink test

Thanks man, and while I agree that your stone would be a beauty, I would bet you that if you put your excellent but not superideal next to one of my Infinity diamonds of the same size and grades for a Wink test that your eye would pick the Infinity every time. It might cost a little more, but it would be worth it! Cut really is KING of the C''s. Nothing else comes close in determining the beauty of the diamond.

You are right, I bet the Infinity looks visibly better.

I realized recently that someone with a $10K budget could still almost buy a nice eye-clean 2 carat ideal at J-SI1 in a simple setting. I thought those days were long gone. I may be wrong but something tells me that the visibly better Infinity would be closer to $15K which is another price point. Someone you and I both know once said that most folks who haven''t seen J themselves think that it looks like what K or L really looks like. Also more than one jeweler and jewelers'' wives I know wear J color diamonds. That should tell folks something.

Wow Wink, thank you for posting your beautiful reply to Indira. You have a palpable passion for your work and the people that you work with. I too am trying to enable my co-worker in the simplest sense of the word: give him the tools to make the best decision for him.

Now, do you have any pictures of that 2+ D IF AGS0?

Mercoledi, your coworker is lucky to have you helping him.

Here''s another consideration: What color/clarity diamonds, if any, does his girlfriend''s mother or sister wear?
