This is wonderful news.
I'm so relieved!
Whewww!

I'm gonna vote for this great man in November!

President Trump on Friday broke with health experts, telling reporters that the coronavirus will “go away without a vaccine.”

“This is going to go away without a vaccine, it’s gonna go away, and we’re not going to see it again, hopefully, after a period of time,” Trump said at the White House. “You may have some flare-ups, and I guess I would expect that.”

Its possible and has happened in the past with other viruses.
On the other hand it could become seasonal like the flu and without a vacine kill nultiple 100k+ each year.
No one knows for sure.
There is way to much useless speculation.

He speaks with such certainty - until the next day, when he vacillates (which is not his fault, btw)...

Since yesterday one of Trump’s personal valet’s tested positive, Pence’s press secretary tested positive and now it’s being reported that Ivanka’s personal assistant has tested positive for Covid-19. I think things are hitting a little too close to home for Trump now. They may want to actually listen to what the scientists and doctors have been recommending.

It will be interesting to see how many more cases show up in the White House.

What a relief. I'm going to make a bonfire and burn my masks tonight.

I mean he did say “after a period of time” which is unspecified. Could be 10 weeks. 10 years. 10 millennia. Who knows.

Yeah. Nonsense statement. There was no actual information imparted.

There was no actual information imparted.

There never is with him. He makes a claim and then issues a disclaimer in the same sentence deliberately done to avoid responsibility for the bilge that oozes out of his mouth. But let us give him credit for partial accuracy: A vaccine isn't necessary if all of its hosts dies ;))

I like your new avitar!

Doesn’t anyone hope he’s right??
There’s never been a successful vaccine for a human Coronavirus so thinking it will work this time may be a very long shot. And several of them have just fizzled out.

It would be pretty awesome if that happens this time because then this version is not likely to reappear and we could get out of SIP! At this point it would be the best case scenario...

Oh you're so right.
What a brilliant argument you make for a most brilliant presidential decree!

Who needs those sadness-making doctors and scientists? :nono:
This is much better!

My president has made me feel so much optimism.
He's like Santa and Jesus rolled up into one reality TV-star. :kiss2:
......... and that's all that this voter reacts to.
I just don't understand all that other stuff.

Now, I just have to vote for him in November.
I feel so much better now.
Ahhhh.

This virus is so foreign to anyone that wtf. Check out this article! I think my county is proof of this bc 80k people violated social distancing rules, wore no masks, and our numbers have not spiked! I’m just saying...

What exactly is the argument against hoping this horrible virus fizzles out sooner vs later?!?!?
I’m not saying it will happen Or that anyone should vote for trump...you don’t need to put words in my mouth. But it seems like there may be as good a chance that this strain fizzles out than developing a vaccine for it. There has been work for DECADES to develop vaccines for strains of Coronavirus... all unsuccessful. Never has there been a vaccine. Why does anyone think it will work this time?

But if you’d rather mock and hope it lingers while people die and the world economy crashes I guess you can get in that camp but I don’t know why anyone would.

Does he mean like the SARS virus?

Ahhhh.
That would be a wasted vote in Ca.

@1ofakind Why would there be “a good chance” it fizzles out? Like you said, coronaviruses have been around getting us ill forever (and mutates like a dickens).

It’s nice to hope for things but hope isn’t evidence or reason. If anyone has links to scientific articles relating to the argument for the “fizzle out” rationale, I’m certainly open to reading it and having my mind changed. Ive been keeping up with the literature fairly well and have yet to read anything convincing along these lines. Certainly as a physician I am not at all hoping for the worst. I also hope I’ll come into billions of dollars but I still plan on a yearly budget and behave accordingly.

I think what frustrates me about Trumps unfounded optimism is when people act in accordance to these hopes, which in this case might not just be dangerous to the individual, but to the collective. If people act like this is likely to go away on its own, people might not take social distancing seriously. I’m already seeing it happen. And if my hospital system leadership feel like there is a “good chance” it “fizzles” then they’re likely to make some potentially disastrous decisions about how we operate.

If we are going on prior evidence then the most likely scenario is we neither have an effective vaccine nor does it “fizzle out”. But we will develop some degree of herd immunity once a large portion of the population gets it. More people will die. Hopefully not as many as we fear, but nobody really knows. Could be 1000 could be 100,000, could be over months or years depending on people’s behaviors. Emphasis on behaviors and not beliefs.

I’m not arguing for people to live in fear and anxiety locked up forever. In fact Im often annoyed with pop media fanning the fears to the point where miasma theory is practically back and people are afraid of the air itself. I’m saying we should strive for a science-based and realistic understanding of what we are facing so we can act accordingly.

Of course maybe I’m biased because I’m a clinician and feel like it’s my job to be grimly realistic and I can’t afford to “hope” if it means I don’t work as hard to chase a treatment or a solution.

Just to offer a little bit of scientific literature, Wu et al. collected meteorological data from all countries (n=166) that reported COVID-19 cases as of late March to explore the link between such meteorological data (daily average temperature, dew point and wind speed) and the rate of COVID-19 infection. They discovered that temperature and humidity were both negatively related to new daily COVID-19 cases and deaths. A 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature was associated with a 3.08% reduction in daily new cases and a 1.19% reduction of daily deaths. A 1% increase in relative humidity was associated with a 0.85% decrease in daily new cases and a 0.51% decrease in daily new deaths. However, given that cases have been reported in the African equatorial and Amazon rainforest regions, the effect of temperature and humidity alone is not sufficient to fully inhibit COVID-19 transmission.

Still, lower rates are lower rates and I’ll take any good news I can get!

@MakingTheGrade I didn’t say there’s a good chance it fizzles out. But it has happened before with some strains while there has never been a vaccine for any strain.

Very interesting, @MakingTheGrade

Ive said before that it "feels" to me that a hot climate gives some countries a head start among other factors.
Now there's data to evaluate. Perfect!

No, you didn't, but Trump did. Which is what the discussion was about.

As well as the leader of the world saying this might imply that there's nothing we actually need to DO. Which is, depending on your current location either completely irrelevant (if you have no new cases) or verging on criminal (if you're in a hot spot).

No one said they hope it doesn't go away either.

So, the sum it up, the argument against the leader of the US saying

" This is going to go away without a vaccine, it’s gonna go away, and we’re not going to see it again, hopefully, after a period of time,”

is: it's scientifically unfounded, stupid BS at best.

Eta: even if he said"I hope it's going to go way without a vaccine "

that would still be completely irrelevant.
I sure do hope it's going to go away. But it's not worth a press conference.
I also hope I'll win the lottery one day.
that's as relevant to the public..

One day like a miracle, it will disappear! Not by Easter (a month ago) but... soon. So get out there and get back to work! What’s another 250,000 dead?

At least this time his words are deliberately vague so truly no one can say he is wrong.
" This is going to go away without a vaccine, it’s gonna go away, and we’re not going to see it again, hopefully, after a period of time"

Back to real news:

In NY a relatively new development- 2 children with mysterious illness linked to Covid 19 virus die. 73 other children very sick. All test positive for Coronavirus.

This is being investigated so no conclusions can be made yet but I can say that Trump is terrifically wrong. About almost everything that comes out of his mouth.

His wisdom is beautiful. It blows me away. The actions he has taken during his presidency are tremendous. Truly great.

This is not fake news at all. His behavior is incredible.

As he enjoys saying "You'll find out, you'll see." "You're going to win so much you may get tired of winning."

Oh yes indeed Mr President, we shall see.

Thank you @missy for the heads up on the symptoms in children...
Off to research now.

It's so horrible, every time he speaks I have a moment of "Fremdscham" aka being embarrassed to one's bones on behalf of someone else... Can't help it

That guy is scarey. No words really.

For me the scary thing isn't that he exists, it's how much support he has. People look at that, at him, they hear what is coming out of his mouth, and they agree with him, they believe him, they support him. They vote for him. I find that incredible.

Yes I wince every time he opens his mouth and despite not supporting him feel embarrassed on behalf of all Americans.

Me too. It's like "The emperor has no clothes" if you kwim. :/

Stupidity doesn't know political party. It's an equal opportunity affliction. Much like the virus.

That used to be true, before Trump. Since Trump, it is no longer true. The Lincoln Project proves it. Anyone with intelligence has either left the Republican Party officially or is opposing Donald Trump being president by voting to remove him from office, like Senator Mitt Romney.

Ah yes. There’s a new Kawasaki like illness among some kids with covid. Luckily the numbers are relatively low but it’s still concerning and yet another thing that makes us aware that we still don’t really understand all the ways in which this novel coronavirus is novel. Sigh.
